kelpie: It is up to the individual guard to pick what weapon suits them at any point so they can best protect Gondor, as a general rule though, if you outnumber them, use the big weapon and swing and never block, or if you are outnumbered or being attacked by ranged, use a shield and one hander.

Remember the golden rule: You may not downblock lances, you must sideblock them.
