Lol no harm done. Bummer to hear that the site has slowed down so much though.

I say try it out and let us know.

Or wait some more.  This forum isn't the place where we can expect answers within 2 hours for fairly obscure questions.

But I waited like twelve.

It's alright, I didn't expect an answer right away. I was just kind of uncertain, this thread used to be on fire when I frequented it about a year ago. If no one else has tried what I was asking I might just go for it myself. I don't want to screw over my fiance (or send my character over the deep end of respectability), it's just that the lady I was trying to court seemed to suddenly become available only after I'd already resigned myself to one whose father was pushing her on me and I wasn't sure how best to proceed.

Thanks for the response JosieJ. That's a logical sounding result, but so far this second lady is going right along with my interest in her and even her father gave me his approval. It's odd, but then again I've never "cheated" on my partner in this game before so I wouldn't know what to expect.

Can I abandon my fiance before the wedding feast and begin courting another lady and if so, what are the repercussions?

I'd be curious to hear the answer because my guess is that, as she's technically your liege, you probably can't interact with her like a normal vassal.

Crap; that's just great. For the longest time I was using the bastard sword because, well, it had great reach and damage. Then I caught that note in the instruction manual about 2H weapons essentially becoming gimped when not wielded on foot using both hands. I even stripped a few heroes of their swords in the More Companions mod for this reason.

I guess I'll have to figure out something else for sieges; but since I love to stay mounted and keep my companions on horses as well, it looks like I'll be going around scooping up some heavier weapons now. No more wussy-ass 37 damage, lol.

    Thanks for the tip.

Question: I was wondering if I can (after renaming his category to something other than "Cavalry") order him to retreat at the beginning or even middle of a battle?

In doing so he would not be knocked out during the battle and thus his surgery and first aid bonus' will remain in effect.  I don't plan to do this for every battle but some larger battles it isn't enough to put him at the bottom of the queue.

    Any thoughts?

I've never done this specifically but since you can place anyone you want into whatever group you decide (say you put your 3 favorite companions into a group called "best"), can you not press the corresponding number on your keyboard to give options to that group only? I've never tried having only certain troops retreat but I don't know why it would be any different than, say, commanding archers to fall back and fire at will.

And in regards to what was said above- is the 2H weapon issue confirmed? 2H weapons will ALWAYS count as two handed as long as you aren't using a shield? Even on horseback?

That's odd; I've noticed that in the early going my weapon proficiency goes up like mad regardless. I developed a siege tactic of pushing my way to the back of the crowd and unloading with a long-range weapon on their unsuspecting backsides and it creates a beautiful scroll of yellow updates on the left of my screen.

I always figured it was just experience points because the wall of yellow doesn't happen so much anymore.

I google every one of these questions before I ask them. They're either answered with uncertainties, completely conflicting answers, or they're not exactly what I'm trying to learn.

I guess asking specifically what's confusing me made more sense than sitting down and reading 91 straight pages hoping to hit upon it.

Huh, I didn't even know there was a specific number given for each fief awarded. Is that kind of info only found in the code or is there a place where you can actually read up on that kind of information? Any sites or wikis I've seen about this game are more general gameplay summaries.

1: When a companion is assigned a fief and leaves the party, do their stats take effect? For example if I give someone with no leadership a fief, will he be able to amass the same size of army (and in as fast a time) as a companion with very high leadership?

2: Would any of you mind telling me who you prefer to award your fiefs to, and why? I'd like a better understanding of the hidden pros and cons.

Although it would certainly make things...interesting...if a faction you've eliminated suddenly showed up again, hellbent on revenge!

I agree. It gets sort of lonely once you eliminate a kingdom or two. I guess that's the name of the game, but still; it would be cool to see the scraps of a defeated faction taking a castle somewhere across the map and trying to start over.

Since this game resembles Sid Meier's Pirates in many ways, that's one thing I wish it could feature- the more generalized territory system which has faction bases scattered here and there and not exclusively in their own single area. The Star Wars Conquest mod for the original game is an example. Although I recognize that this is pretty unrealistic for a medieval based game with troops that aren't naval (or space-faring).

By siding with someone, you mean the disputes they bring up between each other?

Because I'll go ages without one of their arguments, and I'll be killing Sea Raiders and doing quests, and suddenly a companion with high morale will just blurt out that he's sick of things and wants to leave. I actually haven't been doing anything that I could imagine them being negative about. Haven't been at war or raiding anybody or anything.

So far I lost Alayen, Ferentis, Matheld, Artimenner, and Nizar.

I actually just realized that maybe I'm starting to have companion issues again because I'm playing the "More Companions plus Diplomacy mod", and that has been a wreck with the standard companions (the wrong people feud with each other, giving the wrong speeches, and they will talk about incorrect cities when I approach one). So maybe that's the reason this is happening. Could just be a bug. The answers you gave are useful but I'm thinking now that it's probably the mod.

That's a great help; I didn't know that. I've been resisting becoming king forever because in my last game I was a liege right away and started to miss the freelance life. I didn't know you could go back and forth.

    2 questions about companions:

1: When one comes to you with a dispute over someone he or she doesn't like, does it matter what your answer is- as in, if you side with one over the other does that adjust their morale respectively?

2: Speaking of morale, I keep getting (paraphrased for simplicity) "I hate your companions, love your leadership, and hate the way things are going". The companion comment is obvious, but what actions can I take to address the other two? They ALWAYS love my leadership when they leave, and ALWAYS hate the way things are going.

EDIT: And one more: Once you declare yourself king, can you ever give up the life somehow and go back to being a freelancer / mercenary?

I didn't rip on Oblivion, because items don't become stronger unless they're a new weapon, or enchanted.

I know; I was just teasing you because it's so popular for TES fans to hate on Oblivion for its scaling monsters. Which, come to think of it, I guess I was never much of a fan of myself.

Ah, you're right. I was thinking of how it worked for me when I played as king. I've never been a marshal under someone else's rule. Sorry for any confusion. Filou's answer before this one sounds logical.

Thanks for the reply RalliX. As long as you weren't ripping on Oblivion.

I'm still fairly new to the game myself but can you not go to your vassals and tell them that you have new orders and direct them to a location to attack? I don't quite recall the dialog tree but I think that was one of the choices.

Otherwise, if you ask your vassals to simply follow you then they should be joining your siege, I would think? If I remember correctly that's the method I used.

I have another: One-handed weapons seem to max out at about 40 points of damage. Do they scale with the player and eventually go higher, or is this about the highest I can always expect a one-handed weapon to go?

Well that's definitely the one I'm talking about, but since I already have Diplomacy installed I didn't know if I could add the stand-alone version of the companion mod to it without screwing something up.

I could always keep my saves, get rid of Diplomacy, and use this mod instead since it uses both, but I don't know if my old saves would work in that case. I'd be scared of something getting broken down the line.
