    Best companion combination?

I've heard that other nobles that join you get upset if you give fiefs to commoners. so you may want to check that out before you give land to bahestur and firentis

I've got the same companions as you but I'm getting Alayen, Matheld, and Rolf ready to be lords as they are already nobles.

    Favorite Weapons

My favourite weapon is the Balanced Long Arming Sword.  I'm primarily a melee fighter and I find that its balance of reach, speed, and power suits the way I fight very well.

My next favourite is the Balanced lance. I used to use the heavy lance because it had a longer reach but I've come to like the speed of the regular lance.

Favourite ranged weapon has to be the War Bow. Its a good weapon whether I'm on foot or mounted and has a great rate of fire for the damage it does.

    Honourable mentions:
Siege Crossbow- I'm not a huge fan of crossbows but I find them better in sieges involving rhodocks or swadians as they don't drop any arrows for my war bow.

Balanced Pole Axe- On occasion when I'm fighting on foot I like to have a two handed weapon. I like this one because besides looking cool it levels up skill in polearms.

For my companions I just give them a heavy morningstar as the AI seems most competent with one handers.

    Prisoner of dead faction

I had the same problem a while back. I had Ragnar and most of his lords in my dungeon with a prison tower so they weren't going anywhere.

I told my companions to leave for a while, garrisoned my army, and put my good gear into storage. Then I went out adventuring alone in some crappy second-hand gear with Ragnar and his cronies in tow. I attacked every party of bandits I could find until I was gloriously defeated and my prisoners escaped while the thugs were clubbing me unconscious

    The best tournaments

It's rare that every horse gets taken out. You could always mount one of the ones running aorund the yard.

Does the game forces you to use range?

The only time I feel I need a ranged weapon is in a siege. Either as attacker or defender it pays to be able to silence the enemy archers. To avoid getting shot I usually take up a firing position back from the parapet so that I can only see (and be seen) by a couple of the archers on the ground at once.

On the open field I find that the effectiveness of archery depends on the opponent. vs light troops it's awesome. vs guys with good shields and armour it can be pretty pointless. Melee weapons on the other hand can perform well against most adversaries.

You know you've been playing too much Warband when...

When a girl invites you to visit and you start thinking about what cities you can visit on the way
  7. Aurenian

What the hell am I supposed to be doing?

I find it useful to give my companions STR 12/14 and give them morningstars. That makes them pretty good vs all enemies

    Your most ridiculous tournament fight?

the way I get around using javelin is by hitting X and stabbing with it. Not great but better than trying to throw it with crappy skills

    Ridiculous Odds

My equipment wasn't all that flash.

    Balanced heavy lance
    Balanced arming sword
    Thick knightly heater shield
    Great helm
    Heraldic mail with surcoat
    mail mittens
    mail chauses
    Charger

One of the reasons I lost the first two times was I took a courser to try and out maneuver them.

    Ridiculous Odds

My most lopsided battle was me and 200 Swadian Knights vs 1600 khergits + all their lords.  It was on 100 battle size and about 25% difficulty.

I saved game just before the battle. I ended up winning on the third try. But man it took a long time

    Need serious help, please

For starting out I'd say one handed weapon and shield. It's very useful against arrows.  Some good one handers are Morningstars for pure damage or a battle axe for breaking shields.

If you aren't using a ranged weapon consider getting a lance and two-hander in your other slots. That way you can pick the weapon as the opportunity arises.

Another option is to keep a pool of weapons in your inventory. You can then change out either before battle or during via the chest next to your flag.

It might be worth going for an all heavy cavalry army and fight on horseback yourself.  It seems to be the most forgiving option in the game.

In combat you can pick your fights better and get yourself out of bad situations. On the campaign map an all cav party will have a speed of 6 or higher so it is easier to outrun enemies you don't want to fight.

Also the ai seems to favour heavy cavalry. Generally you can just set loose Mamlukes or Knights and they'll do pretty well by themselves. I find infantry need much more control from the player to be effective.

Starting a new character I'd recommend picking on small bands of looters and hitting the tournament scene until you are level 6 or so. Probably don't join a faction until you're around level 10-20.

    How many times...

I usually have my horsemen on follow so that I get a little way ahead of them while we're approaching the enemy.

I get us all up to a decent speed then 15 or 20 yards before we contact the enemy I tell them to charge.

    Works most of the time.

    Ransom a count

is he in a town or castle? I've noticed that sometimes when you go to an enemy castle you get the option to speak with someone inside without actually entering the castle.

Perhaps if you can talk to the lord of the castle you can pay the ransom to him.

Is it me or is WB far harder than M&B?

I think the game has definitely got harder. These are some of the main ways I noticed.

    1) Weapon swings no longer pass through walls/solid objects. -Makes fighting in cramped conditions more difficult
2)horses are slower going uphill and the terrain is more hilly than before.  -gives infantry/archers more opportunities to bring down horsemen.
3)the horses head now gets in the way of weapon swings -can divert a blow at the critical moment

All of those are sensible changes to the game but they do make it a little more challenging. Mostly for people who are used to the way things were before.

As far as money making goes this is what I do.
Early game I usually hit the tournament circuit and trade in between matches.  After I've got about 6k I start hiring companions which I mount on horses to keep party speed up.  I also buy 6-9 extra horses to offset the trade goods. I just keep trading and winning tournaments until I've got decent gear for myself and my companions. Then I build up a decent 'war fund' and join a faction.

During war I ransom lords and prisoners as well as sell off loot from enemy armies.

If my faction is at peace with everyone I garrison my army and go out trading and fighting tournaments again.

    Seems to work

What is your Favourite type of weapon and why?

I voted for polearms.  Although I use several different weapons in different situations my favourite is Lance and shield on horseback.

The shield keeps off the arrows and I can hit a target at a distance.  I find a lance to the face deals with most opponents
  17. Aurenian

Player-owned castle is the main target

I've noticed that all the rhodock lords I've been fighting have armies consisting mainly of sargeants and sharpshooters...
  18. Aurenian

    Very odd picture...

I love the knife in his back
  19. Aurenian

Proof of max shot difficulty is 14.4 ?

I think the highest shot I've ever made was 7.1 but considering how close you are in the first pic I may just need to pay more attention to the combat log
