  1. A few questions after a 100 in-game days

If you want to save Swadia, you need knights, and lots of them. Focus on getting an army. 20-45 knights should do it depending on your difficulty settings. With that many of all cav, you can easily catch enemy parties and run from parties that are too big. Also, get a couple of companions to level up. Give them lots of training skill. This will not help you for a while, but later you will be able to raise tier 3 armies or so very quickly. Then go forth and steamroll with your unstoppable cav army. Defend any towns that come under attack, and get yourself a castle to store men in. Basically, survive. Once some have made peace, build up a siege army. Then, once you go to war again, you can start quickly grabbing castles. If you start to get overwhelmed again, store your siege army, grab those knights, and start the pwnage again. Or you could abandon Swadia and go capture a random castle like I did this game... but to each his own.
  2. I don't get the macanics

All this stuff is good, but the main thing is practice. Play some singleplayer (it can actually be quite fun, and you can test out weapons and mechanics) and learn to block. I have 200+ hours on this game, and that is tiny compared to most of the people here. It takes a long time, and I am only starting to gain some skill now. I mean, you can go sword and a good shield or learn to snipe or lance, but still, you will need to block sometimes. The way I learned to block was going to the training fields on sp. I level up my troops and learn game mechanics at the same time.

Also, fighting one handed without shield can be quite fun sometimes. If you can get in the first hit or learn to block the two handed's first two hits, you can crush him, unless he happens to be a really good blocker. Have fun! This game is all about that, and you will never learn it all. Test stuff out in singleplayer and multi, and do some experimenting. The more you play, the better you will get and the more fun you will have.
  3. How to combat a 1,700 men army attacking my town?

Leave it and then siege again once they are gone. Alternately, if you are not on realistic save, save right now and then try out a few strategies. Go archer with three stacks of arrows (if you are already an archer) and see how many you and your men can take out before you are overwhelmed. Or, like others have said, get a massive 2hand and slaughter them on the ladder. You can always reload. I would do that a few times, see if you can win, and then if you can't, leave the castle and re-conquer as soon as the main army leaves.

Anyone else find that the 2 hand strategy gets you killed quickly? I always get made into a pincushion by archers/xbows. That is why with my current 7 or 8 powerdraw character I like to get a good bow and 3 stacks of bodkin arrows. The enemies fall like wheat before my arrows on the ladder, and then if they break through the line and it gets hairy I can always grab a weapon from the ground.
  4. The Journals of Valerian: An Exile's Tale | Chapter IX Posted

This is epic. Extremely well-written, love the details you put in to make it more real-life than the game. I hope you continue, because this is the best start to an AAR I have seen. Will definitely keep an eye on this.
  5. Why in the world can't I play???

Agreed, a good reinstall can help.

Also I'd suggest asking on the tech support

I feel a bit dumb. I've been on these forums long enough to know that... But thanks guys. I'll try to reinstall it.
  6. Why in the world can't I play???

So I am an avid Warband player, normally on GK siege. I have good ping, and have never had trouble signing in... however, I have been having trouble joining any games. When I click on join game, the text near the top says requesting to join the game, and then an error message pops up with...
  7. Too much attachment to troops?

I never used to care when I hired mercenaries. That is what they are for. But when I started training troops on the training field, I did care a little bit. It gave me a little bit of a thrill to enter battle with my 20 battle tested Swadian Knights who I had trained since they were recruits, and I was a bit sad when they died.

For the most part, I got over it. Besides, this time around I am playing a ruthless character, so why should I care if my troops die?
  8. Training top tier troops

I usually just train them a few levels. Like say Swadia - I take them too a trainer field and train them to men of arms. They survive pretty well after that, and they are knights in no time. Usually if you train them to level 3 or 4 they survive pretty well in battle. And it only takes about 20-30 minutes to train ten or so at a time. Once you get a good base of elites, just kill a few bandit parties or small lord parties and the rest will level up quickly.
  9. i need help :)

Shouldn't this be in the singleplayer section?

Anyway, to my knowledge, once you are a vassal, you won't get any more tasks from lords.
  10. Higher arrow damage - worth it?

Well, I also rarely use bows. If I go archer, I go crossbow. With crossbow, it definitely seems more worth it to get the better bow as opposed to the better bolts. On the rare occasion I do use bows, I get the small, fast draw, cheap ones, because I like to be up near the action, not off in a tower sniping. I guess in that situation, maybe I will see how better arrows help me. Being that close to battle, it is doubtful that I will generally survive long enough to need two stacks of arrows.

Bodkin and khergit arrows are a rip off, they're not worth it.
Get a better crossbow rather than steel bolts, steel bolts are usually the last thing I buy (after maxing my armour).

    This.

Barbed arrows are cheap, but still not really worth it. I'll upgrade them after one round as a Vaegir archer, merely because I can. The minute difference in damage isn't noteworthy.

Now, if the arrows actually had different damage types (cutting for barbed and normal arrows, piercing for bodkins), maybe I'd upgrade to bodkin arrows ASAP. They would have to be more proliferated though, rather than Nord-only.

That's kind of what I do, but I wondered what other people thought since I see a lot of upgraded arrows flying around, especially on Siege (which is what I normally play). Even when playing as an archer, I like to get in the thick of things, so if enemies get close, I don't run, but pull out my weapon and attack. People aren't used to archers who can melee, I've found. In that situation, I feel that armor or a good second weapon is much more valuable to me than some extra damaging arrows. I guess if I was sniping from some tower with a warbow, but...

Edit: So I just tried out the siege crossbow in multiplayer... WOW. I still remain an infantry player, but that weapon alone might make me seriously consider going archer-infantry cross on factions with crossbows. There is just something about headshotting somebody for a one hit kill with that thing... It's like the M-95 in Battlefield Bad Company 2. So freaking powerful. Good feeling...
  12. Higher arrow damage - worth it?

I find It can make a difference in the number of shots it takes to kill someone.

I'm sure it can make a difference - but is it worth it for the amount of money you have to spend, and lack of better armor? Because I like to have a lot of arrows (call it a habit from playing FPS's... an eternal fear of running out of ammo), so I always get two stacks.
  13. Higher arrow damage - worth it?

Let me start out by saying I play almost exclusively infantry on multi. However if I am doing badly or am a bit bored, I will play as an archer (I hate playing as cavalry with a passion, so don't get me started there). I wondered if any of you all had opinions on whether or not to go ahead and...
  14. Huge Steam Sale

Wait until the games are 75% off, they are 50% apart from one series of games that are 75% for one day only.

What day are they 75% off? I was waiting for something like this to pick up Napoleonic Wars.
  15. Anyone else notice this?

Honestly, the hardest weapon to use is a lance, but even then you should be able to take out enough people to pick up a sword or something from the ground. Unless of course it is a Swadian tournament... Even then, it is still simple. All you have to do is wait for the AI to run into walls and then couch them.

If it's a 1v1 and you have a bow, you can win even if you do not have good bow skill. If they have no shield, shoot them from afar and then attack when they get close. If they do have a shield, don't bother with bow, just spam dagger on them. The dagger is much faster. Of course, this is assuming you are on foot. On a horse, just shoot them and run; rinse and repeat. If they are on a horse, shoot the horse from under them first.

Edit: but indeed, this game is bloody unfair sometimes.  However, it is also one of the funnest games in existence.  I guess it all balances out in the end.

Heres a good tip in your kingdom, go for Quality not quantity.

^This. I have not yet ever started a kingdom of my own, but I am sure this works well with lords. However, you can absolutely murder the enemy with quality troops. I have ten Swadian Knights in my current game that I trained, and they absolutely rip through any bandit party in existence. I almost never lose any even against large sea raider parties. Another twenty Knights and I could take on lords.

I hate what just happened to me. I got a nice group of Swadian recruits, and trained them to Men at Arms. I then headed to Rivacheg to farm Sea Raiders. After I took on a few groups I now have: 7 Swadian Knights, 1 Swadian Man at Arms, and me (who counts for quite a few. ) I accidentally attacked a group of raiders close to another group, and so it is us 9 against 59 Sea Raiders.

Here is the deal - we killed 46 of them before I was knocked unconscious (I was careless) and did not lose a man. I figured, hey, might as well finish it. I didn't lost a man with 9 against 59, my 8 against 13 ought to go easy.

I was wrong! I lost 2 knights and the Man at Arms! And I still did not take all the Sea Raiders out. In disgust, I left the rest of the miserable bandits. So yeah. I freaking hate the autoresolve function in this game.

Never under estimate those damn sea raiders or tundra bandits the sea raiders are like the nords but the nords are ruled by a weak king which is why i rebelled and took over the kingdom and gave it, it's rightful glory

I know all about that! But this time it wasn't the sea raiders - it was the autocalc. Swadian Knights own all... I now have ten of them, and I am taking on sea raider parties of massive size. Like 40 routinely. Anyway, I still hate autocalc.

  19. tips and tricks for noobies - post all your special tricks , tacticts here

My tip is to rescue a ton of prisoners before you join a faction. Just watch that bottom left corner for "so and so captured", and then head to a tavern of that faction to see who needs some help, and go talk to the family member. Then, waltz in to the castle at night and break them out. You will get loads of money, honor, experience, and positive relations.

Also, if you want to get a lot of money, but hate trading (like me), go farm the route between Khudan and Rivacheg. If you want a longer route, throw in Curaw and Wercheg. You will get loads of XP and money from Sea Raiders, Tundra Bandits, and Taiga bandits. You can actually get some pretty good gear from them too - I have a Lordly Bernie in my current game from some poor Sea Raider I headshotted.
  20. Who is your favorite companion the one you always look for?

I like Bunduk. He seems pretty cool with most anything. I'm really ok with most of them, but I hate Klethi, Rolf, and Nizar with passion. They always turn on me, always are complaining, etc...

Actually, for fun, I have not taken any companions permanently this game. I send them out to farm right to rule, and then I strip them of their weapons and armor and send them packing. It is amusing to go into a tavern and have like three of them standing there in their underwear.
