  1. Which shield do you prefer and why?

    candyman 说:
One thing always bugged me about that movie
    the wife to leonidas:
"Come home with your shield or upon it"
... it sounds cool and all, until you realise she's basically telling him not to be a little wussy...

    This statement was historically inaccurate.

His mother would tell him that on giving him his shield.  It is an admonishment that it is better to *die* than it is to flee--because, if you flee, the first thing that gets dropped is your shield, since that will get in your way.  That was the Spartan way, and part of the reason they were so successful militarily.  Of course, being a Spartan male meant you only did war, and nothing else, and being born not perfect was a death sentence...
  2. Which shield do you prefer and why?

Well, if they're spread out in a line, I'd try and flank them while mounted, which makes it much easier.  But if they're in front of me, nothing short of a fur-covered doomshield will save you--they just love hitting feet.

Now, if I'm in a siege, I am certainly using a huscarl or board shield--It's lunacy to do anything less.  But mounted, a steel cav shield can save your hide if you get unhorsed near a bunch of infantry.  I know some people keep two shields on them, and if you're going to do this, make one steel the other huscarl/board.
  3. is it me or...

Who cares?  Villages are crap money anyhow, and it draws them well away from tactical actions.  If you really want to deal with them, wait near your town, in the woods, with high-tier troops and ambush the hell out of them while they're raiding.  Villagers will absorb tons of hits for you, and you get to waste a foe.
  4. Sharpshooters underperforming

    Felonious 说:
A line of Sharpshooters firing in unison is indeed a wonderful thing.
Volley fire works wonders against cavalry in field battles, not entirely sure why, seeing as it theoretically lowers the firing rate, and therefore overall damage, of your crossbowmen.

I have a theory (That is mine, it is my theory *atchoo atchoo*) that it's because when firing as a volley, the sheer amount of bolts overwhelms shields, seeing as all it takes is one shot to get through and then the shield drops. But this still doesn't seem to account for the massive amounts of newly dismounted Knights wandering around after every volley.

It probably is just an illusion, created by all their horses  being killed at the same time, but dammit, it's an awesome illusion.

I'll continue being happy with my placebo.

Volleys reduce the effectiveness of the shield skill.  You can't move it in two directions simultaneously, so blocking one necessarily allows a different one to get through.  A disjoint attack allows the shield skill to cover the body more effectively.
  5. Pronunciation of Vaegirs

The "ae" combination should mean that Vah is automatically out.
ae would indicate an shortened 'e' sound, so it should actually be "veh".

    Long e.  Aether=ether.  Veegirs--they seek the creator.
  6. AAR: Me, Floris | Completed | Chapter 60 & Epilogue posted (19-09-2015)

Look, just tell a few hundred huscarls that if they take over that castle, you've got 500 casks of ale for them.

    Things will work themselves out.
  7. Sharpshooters underperforming

What got me was that I was shooting perfectly fine from that position.  So I don't know what the problem was.
  8. Sharpshooters underperforming

    Captain_Octavius 说:
Eh? In sieges it's far better to place them just a little behind the Sergeants so they are protected by their shields, not in front of them. In sieges they need to fire upwards so units in front of them a little are no obstacle. In field battles it effectively disables them from shooting though, unless you found a good hill.

See, I tried that (sergeants 10 paces ahead), and they wouldn't fire.  So I went to archers fire at will, nothing.  Then I moved my sergeants back, and suddenly the sharpies started shooting.  I was...unthrilled
  9. Which shield do you prefer and why?

    Going to say this:

I was playing recently, trying a steel shield out, and I got unhorsed, and new enemies appeared right on top of me.

I backpedaled with that shield up, and I survived long enough to lead them into my men, who saved my ass.  My shield was battered looking by the end of it, but there is no way that a wooden shield would have survived.

    ETF 说:
I am doing a Rhodok playthrough after being destroyed by them in keep sieges and my Sharpshooters have been really underwhelming in field battles.

I read about other people using them and decimating enemy lines before they even get close, tons of kills, etc, but I position mine in good high spots where they have plenty of time to shoot, place my Sergeants forward so they catch enemies while the Sharpshooters can shoot freely.  They barely kill anything.  My kill log is full of companion and Sergeant kills with the very occasionally sharpshooter kill.  Before battle lines meet they will get maybe 1-2 kills.  I'm pretty underwhelmed :<

Army composition is about 7 companions, 25 Sergeants, 30+ Sharpshooters.

Go to a siege.  Have your sharpies stand slightly in front of your sergeants.  Reap the benefits.

If you are fighting in the field, it's best to find a way for them to have a flank shot on the enemy.

I hate to buy out, but sometimes i have to. I'f im attending a party i go alone with my companions. I travel fast but if some bastard intercepts me i buy them out. I hate fighting mountain bandits.
this is true. sometimes we do fall in the situation where there is no other way out that's beneficial for us. but using money one's own soldiers paid for with blood to pay off bandits instead of investing it in training and upgrading one's soldiers has only one name - BULL****!

That's why I have my income come from my enterprises.

wait, you actually buy them off instead of killing them? SPINELESS COWARD!

Only if I'm grossly outnumbered and outclassed.  Or just don't feel like wasting them.
  13. What bandit/outlaw type do you find the most dangerous?

Sea raiders.  Everyone else you can buy off, but they just want to drink from your skull.
  14. is it me or...

The AI ALWAYS does this.  My last game in native, I hat Vayajeg, in Nord lands, and I personally had conquered all of Vaegir territory, pretty much.

The Sarranids went to war with us, to "curb our power."  They marched across the whole map to raid my village first, literally ignoring every other village on the way.
  15. Help me with my character's build

Training is an awesome, awesome skill.  If you are decent level, and have a bunch of points in it, you can get some mid-level troops real quick when getting ready for a campaign.  Your companions have it too?  GREAT--everyone grants that XP, period.  So if all your companions have 10 ranks in it, say hello to huscarls really quick-like.
  16. Your Favourite Weapon?

Balanced Great Lance because I goddamn love running fools down, especially routing fools.  That is most choice.

Also, I love my siege crossbow.  Sure, bows have higher rates of fire, and if I put a ton of skill points into power draw can potentially do more damage per shot, but I'd rather spend those precious, precious skill points on tactics, training and other skills that keep the guys who are draining my cash alive.  I know it sounds really stupid when I put it that way, but I'd much rather spend 2k/week on upkeep (out of 9k/week income) and have 80 meatshields than worry about dying in combat because there are 80 assholes coming from a different part of the map.
  17. guild master from town screen?

It's also part of the Diplomacy mod.  Works with village elder as well.
  18. Renaming my Chamberlain/Chancellor

So I've been playing for a while, and I got my first fief.  I hired a chamberlain, and I decided that I don't like his name, and I want to change it.  Is there a simple, easy, non-game breaking way to do so, and if so--what is it?
  19. best companion

I like having Lezalit and Artimenner in my party, since they get along well, and Artimenner has ranks in Engineer, so I don't have to.  Then I bust their int up high, and give them tons of training skills, and then my party gets trained up real good.
  20. How to stop massive village rape?

What can you do about your village getting raped?

Form your own kingdom, and assign villages to vassals so you don't have to deal with that bull****.  I've had Sarranids attack me way up near Sargoth--crossing the entirety of my territory that did NOT have villages assigned to me, just to get to my village.  These were men I had never met at all, and had never fought or done anything at all to.  Oh no, my village was the only one for them to raid.

It's just not worth it.  They will simply raid the living hell out of it for fun.  That's what they do.
