Tactics against horses (Heck, I use it in almost every situation):

Hold your position, Stand closer x4, advance the map using Hold your position towards the enemy.

Your soldiers will now move in a 4 rows of almost equal length and stay in formation (Works best when the same type of unit, obviously)

After finally taking over the Ramparts in Yalen I'm left to face enemies that spawned passed the Barricades.

Wait for a war party and hope they capture a keep. It'll be assigned to you and hopefully it'll have a few people in it after that

Get a trader (3 will do) and make some good money trading. If your playing non-warband there are some good guides on the fastest way to make cash

Do the Mamlukes have a blunt weapon? If you order the cavalry to switch to a blunt weapon...

If you vastly outnumber them (Let's say 3:1) you could just demand a surrender and they'll go "Erm... Good idea."

That might need you to have a decent honour rating though

Nord Huscarls; the best way to ruin anyone's day.

When up against horsies Hold position and call for a group hug a few times so the horsemen can't just run right through your men.\

Edit: And advance slowly using Huscarls as well.

Attack peasants, switch to blunt weapons hope there are wommanz in party.

Either way, it would be nice to get the village battle setting when your defending it instead of something else...

For the question for 2, it's just me but I usually dislike having to start an incident and well... It just doesn't seem right that I'm considered the aggressor just because they choose to raid a town (And plus, if it's scripted in you'll get villagers to help you in your battle against that lords army... Woohoo).

In case you find another one; the funny thing with these quests is that they could be far away from the town by the time you get it...

Although next time you get a quest like that talk to random people on the overland map; you'll have the conversation option to look for >Bandits<. They'll say "Nope, haven't seen em'" or "Oh... I've seen that lot near <Town> so many hours ago."

After talking to *everyone* I ran into (I don't think the spy would be that elusive in a town...) using all the phrases available I still couldn't find the spy.

...And is it normal to have 8 "Townswoman" spawning every single time you reenter the town in the hopes of finding the poor sod?

Personally I very rarely fix my forces so this hasn't come up.

Unless you take the horse archers for the movement speed bonus out of combat it is certainly a very rough fix...
