Attack direction is based on a couple things, if you left click, drag, and release quickly, then it uses the average direction of your mouse gesture. If you hold it longer then it just used the direction from your first mouse point to the last. This means you can fine tune the angle by moving your mouse in a circle. works the same for stabbing. So I think it's pretty close to M&B if you release fast, different if you hold it. You can lock the angle by hitting the right mouse button too, that lets you run around and aim while holding the attack ready. Hope that's not too unintuitive, it's hard to pack in the detail needed while keeping controls easy.
