If kick were removed then the days of the orbit-fighters would resume, where the only way to win was by circling and trying to land a blow on their back.
However I wouldn't complain if they relegated kicking to the role of merely forcing your opponent back without the total stun.

I.e. :

1. Leave the kick TIMER as-is, but:
2. Make the kicks easier to hit, like they used to be. Right now there's a delay and the kick only hits at the peak of the animation. 
3. Stun the recipient in terms of attacks but:
4. Not stun the recipient in terms of being able to block/parry


Right now when you tap the kick key you know someone person is going to die. But you don't know who.

And FFS if you have a shield it should be a shield bash/shove animation.
