This is really sad news to hear...  I think a lot of us have known Hamor for many many years...
Whilst I know he could be quite polarising, he was a key character in our warband /napoleonic wars scene. He will be missed.

My heart goes out to his family.

Rest in Peace Vieille Garde brother.

Ok, let me break it down for you (it's likely that others don't have as many issues, but oh well)

I go full screen [alt+enter], it crashes
I click too much, it crashes
I change any of the settings, it crashes
    etc, etc
I don't have any of those problems. I play in full screen etc.. but i do have a new pc...

    Sundeki 说:
Then there's the issues with the game when I do finally get into a server:
I keep falling through the ground momentarily, I keep getting stuck in trees, I'm teleporting everywhere (50~ ping), animations are buggy and half the time my enemy doesn't even swing and I just drop dead.

Even when the combat is working fine: it's slow, animations don't make any sense, swords are 3x longer than the texture, a standard fight between only two individuals goes for about 7 minutes.
Not to mention everyone runs around like they have a broom up their ass.

Like I said, good thing it's in beta.
Completely agree with all the bugs here... plus:
    - the combat is nowhere near as fluid as warband
    - even with a ping of <20 the melee animations seem to have issues
    - game decides to pack up half way through and kills the online server; then the AU servers go down for 20minutes
    - XP stops working so you can't level up to the other classes, then a day or two later you get all the XP that you should have incrementally received.
    - Weapons are *very* *very* *very* unbalanced
    - names above even the enemy to give away their positions is stupid at best
    - and maybe i'm just new, but it seems to be all about ganking and spamming

I'm sure the extra 5 seconds against a half decent player would have made it all the more fun. It doesn't help that all the other steamsale kids have adhd and give up after 3 rounds tho.

The concept of "steam sale" players could be the source of the problem. Gamers that only spend $5 on a game haven't really invested anything, and so are quick to judge and discard the game. I bet they would give it more of a chance had they spent $50 on the game...

so much generalised non-factual BS being spouted here...

BaronBaanus - Back in the day, we spent hours and hours training new players, building new maps, setting up scrims etc... so perhaps try not debating on something you know nothing about?

Just face facts, you've joined a game at the tail end of it's life. You're not going to get the reception you're after. That excitement with the game has come and gone for a lot of ppl after several thousand hours of playing.
These days most people play other games or newer mods waiting for a more refined warband-esk game to be released with new challenges.

...and your remark about the pre-adolescent gamers, I think you'll find most of the older games from warband are in their 20's/30's; it's the newer players that would be pre-adolescent that have come through the steam sales that can only afford the game at $9.99 in a sale bought with the pocket money given to them by their parents.

Is anyone getting the menu/text bug when playing on games_on_net_Melee with latest patch (1.152) ?

In fact, can anyone getting the bug please post what version you're running and if you're steam/non-steam?

Lasz.. I had that problem; was running steam with latest patched version.
    I uninstalled and loaded a non-steam version of 1143

Haven't we had this 'retaining new players' discussion on about 70 of the 108 pages of this thread...

The truth of the matter is that the warband population will hit peaks when there's a steam sale, and troughs when there isn't.

My question is that given we have historically only had a DM, Battle and Duel server, and new players inevitably seem to leave when they get smeeshed... why would turning off a new game server style (TDM) and going back to just the other 3 improve things?

From recent experience, the TDM server seems to constantly have a good number of players, and when I go in there, most of them are new (or at least I don't recognise most of them)... so why go back to a model that we know causes new players to drop off?

Just let them have fun on TDM at their own pace while enjoying the 'team' component of warband (i use that term loosely). Just turn auto-block off, otherwise they will learn nothing and give up in the battle servers.. or worse... form a clan of retards that can't block...

It's also a good and casual way to get newcomers even interested enough in the game to practice to a level where they can even have fun on battle though.

..highly unlikely given TDM has auto block on. they will get smeeshed in battle.

Just a heads up... if anyone gets an error with the latest warband update over steam that either doesn't launch the game, or if you try to manually go into the steam folder and launch the warband exe and get this:
Xinput1_3 dll is missing from your computer

It's because the update screwed DirectX.

Solution is to go here and install this:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

    then it will work again.

...just watched the latest war of the roses vids on youtube. looks awesome. can't wait.

only problem I have while watching the interview with the executive producer was that he mentioned there will be some gunpowder weapons. Not a big fan of that... although he did mention they were very 'non precise'

    Hear, hear!

We have a distinctive and small community. Might as well keep the people within it happy. Yes, we get new blood occasionally, but we generally have about 50-80 regular people who are pretty loyal to this game/keep coming back.

The new weapons and outfits, although simple, has been really good in my view. Finally some difference from the norm which isn't cRPG.

Laszlo deserves some credit, he has really put a lot of effort into many different aspects of the Australian Warband community. *claps* (this is not sarcasm)

Warband 2, War of the Roses and Chivalry are all going to be incredible games that use this sort of combat system, so we have plenty to look forward to in that regard. I honestly can't find a game I enjoy more than this, despite the constant idiots and glitchy aspects I often encounter, but I hope this game inspires many great games in future.

I agree doom... i think the big game development houses have a lot to learn from warband in terms of melee... i can't think of another game that compares.

I'm all for melee only... but won't we lose what little new blood we have?

I don't see why that would happen?

Typically new players find it difficult to block without a shield. Dying first every round and waiting might tip them over to another game.

...that's not to say I don't think it would be fun.

Also from what i heard NBN won't be done for another 10 years or so? who'd be playing warband by then?

Pretty sure the bulk of the rollout in major metro areas is meant to be within the next 3 years... ISP's already have plans and product infrastructure. check out www.nbnco.com.au (company set up by the government to handle the rollouts).
