Fraps, is as far as I am concerned what you want to be running to record gaming. Fraps just as has far more settings you can tweak and alter, quality imho is better as well.
Also, of note I have found that at least for my pc(which may just be it not being completely insane with parts) is that I record games much better if I save whatever I am recording to a second hard drive which I really only use for saving videos.
I see it as akin to Photoshop, true one has to pay for the full version(or any version) but in the end it still seems much better than the alternative free versions.
