Does the "recruit from nearby villages" option in castles need some things to be true for it to work? I've captured Ironoak and the last 2 times I've told my dude that the garrison has stayed 0.

For what it matters, its on the front so there is only one friendly village nearby and we've been at war for most of the time I've had it. But it does make it annoying to defend this place with no garrison.

dude... if the villages nearby are looted.. you wont get NOOO recruits... You might as well fill it up with your soldiers and then recruit some more. Only solution I see there.

ut countless minor battles can also include some where big numbers of prisoners change hands. Say Mystmountains gather hundreds of easy marks to their prisoner train and then later some real bossman comes and joins everyone of them into their stack. Then you get truly horrific stacks.

For example in one of my games Snake Cult warband had 700 soldiers, which met 400 large Ithilrandir. Latter prevailed and alas, 2000 man Noldor warparty (chiefly not Noldors, but meatshields are useful for them) was born. With new sacking mechanism these superlarged stacks should be frightening.

The D'shar bladesmen/masters for sheer killy power and the Fierdsvain Huscarls for a massive and very strong shield with some anti-shield axes.

You're going to do well as long as the bad guys aren't holding up shields. THAT is the thing you have to figure out how to do without infantry. I'm sure you already know about circling around an entrenched enemy to turn their backs to your archer line -- but that isn't always going to do the trick. A cavalry-heavy enemy is going to stomp your line, regardless. It's a tough go, I know. Sarleon is going to be a major issue for you, as they pack tons of cavalry and their knights are top-notch. Heavy lancer units are just the bane of archer lines, and that's what Sarleon specializes in.

If I can offer one more thing? Maybe don't try to take on Sarleon right away... how is the Empire doing? What state are the Dshar in? Could you join in with one of them (or the Fierds) and weaken the Sarleon faction to make them vulnerable before exacting your justice upon them? I've done an archer-only run before... and it didn't end well LOL -- but I was just using ground troops only, and no cav. You have a much better chance at this than I did.

EDIT: It might be time to consider getting some Fierd Heavy Archers and relabeling them infantry. They suck as archers, I know, but if you are able to give your real archer line some breathing room, it will do wonders for you. Let the FHA's soak cavalry and infantry charges, and your back archer line can shoot continuously without being disturbed so much. Just an idea.

Pendor Armored Bowmen are every bit as good as Rangers in skill and equipment. They are slightly less hardy, however -- lower health, not quite as good armor -- but they make up for that by being a lower total level, and costing less money to maintain. When you have large forces numbering in the hundreds, the difference in costs between Ravenstern and Pendor can be severe. Plus, training up Pendor troops is just easier and faster in general.
