Tar. Any suggestions where can I find it?

you can find tar in centers, from caravans (buy/loot) or create a enterprise that produces it

Norway is usually a good place to look for it

    1. You can "buy" from caravans?

    2. What enterprise? I thought the only ones available are the brewery and ironworks and such; is there another type of enterprise I'm not aware of?

    Tournament Prizes

I've found tidbits of speculative information here and there on the forum, but no definitive answer anywhere, for 2 questions: 1. Is there a complete list of all possible "special prizes" for the tournaments anywhere? (I've heard people mention greek horses, wolf armors, rich swords, "cow," and...

    How to build companions properly?

    Pode 说:
Bigger concern, especially if you're not putting them on horses, is gimping their athletics and thus stamina. They'll only lose 1 PD / PT point but up to 4 Athletics points. A few percent more damage per hit isn't a worthwhile tradeoff versus them living long enough to get more hits in. So I go heavy and horses, but am always careful to pick lighter versions of gear that provide the same protection. For foot companions that need athletics more it'll be more of a tradeoff that I can't speak to.

IIRC an Xbow with the best bolts does 59P versus a military fustibalus with lead for 49B(39? + 10). I've not checked to see if VC uses different damage type modifiers than vanilla Warband. If not, those two are going to be roughly the same net damage against anyone wearing mail. Which is who you care about, overkilling a farmer doesn't kill the farmer next to him. The fustibalus has a bit faster rate of fire. The Xbow has better projectile speed, which means it's more effective at longer range. So I'd let their proficiencies dictate between the two.

Neither IMO outweighs the value of immortal heavily armed and armored shock troops, mounted or foot. Put 'em all in the front lines with a spear, shield, sidearm, and some throwing spears. Yeah they get KO'd a lot, that's what first aid skill is for.

Pretty sure that only equipped weapons have effects, so just having it in their inventory is no good. Especially the horn with it's one and done effect might be worthwhile in your slots as a commander though. Dunno if the horn bonus stacks with the leadership war cry effect.

TY for the quick replies as always; Xbow + Best Bolts (Piercing/Bodkin both is +5, but piercing is more expensive for some reason) comes out to 60P, while Mil Fus is 29 +10 Lead=39B. Although Mil fus have twice the speed rating; although from the sound of it, it seems against armor, Xbow works better despite the slow firing. Ty for all the suggestions, I think I have a good idea of how to build my team now.

    How to build companions properly?

    Pode 说:
Indeed. I am gamily exploiting the fact that companions are immortal. While I can sort of justify a horse for myself as giving the commander a higher and thus better view of the battlefield, and mounts for a bodyguard unit that stayed near me, a crack suicide squad who flanks and then charges a shield wall just to distract them is as realistic as battle magic. Very effective though.

For a less fantastical foot build I think I'd use them as my frontmost screen, with a shield, a hand and a half axe / sword, and two pairs of throwing spears unless they had really good skill with crossbow or sling.

Ty for all the reply guys.

    Two last questions:
    1. For armor; Heavy as they can go or avoid gimping their throw/draw skill?
    2. If by raw damage, would you recommend Xbow over sling for AI?

EDIT: Oh and also, any point at giving Horns/banners to the companions? Is the effect active just by being in the inventory or do they actually have to wave/blow it?

    How to build companions properly?

    Pode 说:
Agathinos can hit INT 20 by level 16, which makes him the go to for all the INT party skills. Asbjorn can get INT 16 quickly and still be a respectable warrior, so he's your medic until Agathinos catches up. Caio and Ailchu can both hit AGI 20 by level 21 to cover the other party skills. I'd use Ailchu as the skill dump since Caio has better strength for combat. Cealwin can wield the Troll Axe by level 16. Solveig has great persuasion. Everyone else in my group gets javs, spear, sword/axe, shield and a timid pony if they can't ride or a formerly lame pony if they can. Att points into STR then AGI. Skill points into leadership, training, power strike, power throw, weapon master, riding, athletics, in that order. I keep my skill guys in a group in the back with my hornmen and standard bearers and use the rest to flank then charge enemy skirmishers or distract the shield wall while my main force throws at them.

Awesome~! So from the sound of it, Other than Alichu and Agathinos and Asbjorn as the HM mules and Ceawlin for infantry, rest are lancer cavalry?

What about equipment for the mules? Any preferences? ie. Type of Ranged item (Give them Xbows or Slings for the higher ammo count? Or just javalins like the rest?) and type of armor (Heavy armor or cheap armor?)

EDIT: Oh and also, do you give your lancers Reach ~200 Spears? (Long War Spear/Ray/etc.) or ~150 Spears? (War Spear)

    How to build companions properly?

So... Really old topic, same unanswered question. Is there a ideal companion build detail anywhere to find? The original reply seemingly lead to a page with not a single guide on this and general forum search yielded nothing.

Basically, for each companion; The Ideal Loadout for their Role (Cavalry, Melee, or Ranged; And if ranged, Sling/Xbow/Bow/Throwing), Attribute and Skill builds.

Understandably, we can make every one of them into a horse-riding lancer with enough levels, but clearly Agathinos will take more work at getting there than Ailchu~ Especially considering attributes are hard to come by in VC compared to Warband, I do not want to deviate too far from their intended roles - if there is a viable one available.

    Army Standard is underappreciated

Hmm... Good thought, just something I will toss out for you to consider:

    Army Banner - Swing 16/Thrust 16, Speed 72, Reach 247, No horseback; Price ~1000p
    Ray (Spear) - Swing 21/Thrust 31, Speed 88, Reach 220, Horseback allowed; Price 8000p

Personally, I'd rather use Ray for the purpose you describe, its faster and more powerful with just 27 less reach. But once anything is over 200 reach, it functions well outside any enemy weapons. On field, as a spear, it is still devastating if you are good with timing thrusts on horseback - whereas the banner cannot be used on horseback. The only downside of Ray is that it is a tad expensive, but since you can buy infinite copies of it anyways, as long as you have the cash and uses polearms, it is a worthwhile investment.

    Need advice capturing Dun Taruo

    TYR 说:
This is the most unbalanced quest in the storymode in my opinion. The task to take a castle in the enemies hinterland and hold it for roughly a month while not having an economic power base is quite tricky. The general strategy is to establish a hideout next to the castle at the coast, and upgrade it preferably to tier 3. There you can store your troops while you make loot runs i. e. killing caravans or small lords to even out the high costs of maintaining an army of 200+. Having a few farmsteads helps alot as well.

Once ou have a hardened force of about 120 men + some rabble like archers, you can assault the fortress, a quick solution is preferable as there is a high chance of an enemy response, if our unlucky you get swarmed by the marshal with 3+parties. Taking the fortress is quite easy, rush in with your shocktroops and massacre the garrison. Preferably wait until the lord is away, and you face about 300 men.

Once taken, transfer all your refuge troops into the holding, tier 1 or 2 troops will do. There is al ot of rabble running around in scotland you can recruit those guys. Now it depends on luck again if Alban will respond or not. Sometimes they attack the castle with 800+ men sometimes they dont. If  they do, Id rather run away and save the troops to attack it right after they left again. The timer wil be reset though.

You could also ask a friendly lord of your faction for help and hew will follow you. Its quite tricky to get him up there though, might try over the searoute.

It may be just me, but I don't think you need to continuously hold Dun Taruo for 20 days.

I got the quest completed basically by sending halfdan to capture it with his absurdly large 300+ men stack, with me just bringing my personal full-ship retinue of 55 (which I quartered away during the siege - mostly to use them as an escort into the hinterlands from northmathr viking attacks). I basically left Taruo defenseless after it was taken, and just go back to trading and fighting vikingrs - and building my forces.

My original intention was to keep the garrison weak - since the first siege was a pain with its garrison of 300+ men, while I build up my forces to eventually take it myself from a ~100ish garrison after it is recaptured. To my surprise, after the 4th time taking Taruo (To never leave it unattacked for long enough to build up its garrison), just 2 days later the quest said it completed the 20 day hold. Granted, this plan took me about 120 game days to reach, but I was preoccupied with the constant attack from the 9 other nations Northumbria is hilariously at war with and was raiding trade convoys left and right.

Oh also, curious question, is the script designed to purposely favor the king's equipment in tournaments? I've only seemingly be lumped with disadvantageous gear every time its up against a king in the finals.

    First time: Spear/shield against the king's sword/shield
Second time: Axe/no shield against the king's Javalin/Axe/Shield
    Third Time: Spear/shield against the king's axe/shield

It doesn't seem to happen with nobodies in the final, but the kings always seem to get the upper hand in gear.

EDIT: Also, another question, How do I get my soldiers back on the correct ship after they won?

EDIT: And finally, Can I fire Marcus after the refuge is fully upgraded? Would it affect anything important?

    more parties

bandit troop composition is based on yours (your current army strength, not simple quantity/numbers). The system works over time, so changes take time as well.

Can someone help me name my character?!

Names, the thing you spent hours to come up with in crusader kings 2 that you can just reuse here without guilt ;p. I prefer Ua Elyot as a last name (my good old custom irish dynasty), because the "y" looks exotic, that and the Eliott were scottish border reavers, so no reason why there shouldn't be a irish border reaver as well ;p.
For vikings, I tend to reuse my Old Gods DLC custom dynasties alot; Like my favorite brothers Alfar Gandalfsson, Alfarin Gandalfsson or their sister Alfhild Gandalfsdottir of the Alfling/Alfinger dynasty from Alfheimr - because Elfs are cool. With a haitus in playing Crusader Kings 2, I also suggest you can reuse some of the more popular "later" dynasties and roleplay as the founder. Rollo de Normandie, Estrids, etc. As for the first name, everyone is named Bjorn, so might as well go with Bjorn for viking.

what kind of formations do you use? do they matter?

Depends on the enemy for me. If the enemy is spear heavy like Swedish or Norwegian Vikings, I would go shieldwall because their spears are less effective when jammed into a mob of men, Otherwise, I would do 2 thin lines without formation, with skirms and disposable units in front and units I want to upgrade and keep in the back. My personal favorite is still to have my own troops stay a thin non-formation line in the back while the people I am supposedly be helping to take the brunt of the enemy javalins by having them stand 10 paces ahead.

Do the "spawn 50% more bandits" mean more bandit parties or more bandits per party? Because I am exhausting the roving berserker Viking parties too quickly, so would love more parties, but not larger parties that will cost me my numerical advantage.

    Character builds

Neway, below is my general weapon set:
1: Halberd/Glaive (Took the place of my croucher weapon, since in crouching lance, the dmg KO's everything, I don't see why not to switch to a halberd/glaive; shorter thus better for turning, and has slashing when used on foot, meaning versitility in siege and unmounted combat, and not a useless slow spear that always gets stuck in front of a shield and easily gets parried)
2: Sabre/Flamburge (I never liked stabbing weapons, and on horseback, all polearms stab, so I like to have a swing weapon to take out enemies in hilly terrain)
3: Repeater/Redeemer/Bow of some sort (Whichever one I get, I guess... Guns for this mod, and bows for the gunless ones, useful in siege combat, since I hate waiting for the siege tower to roll in)
    4: Ammo
