  1. Starting age - 18 to 21 is more appropriate

Actually, I believe it's a bit misunderstood that 30 was close to death for people at that time. They generally lived for quite awhile but the difference is infant mortality was far higher back then.
  2. When was the first time you ever played mount&blade

It was 2006 or 2007 when I bought into "early access" of the original Mount and Blade.
  3. Which leveling system do you prefer Warband or Bannerlord?

Bannerlord supposedly forces you to be jack of all trades? That doesn't make sense, it actually strongly incentivizes you to pick a certain build and stick to it.
  4. What's your favourite weapon?

The best sword I've made so far and the best polearm:

Arguable whether the polearm is better than Rhomphalia but the fact that it's couchable might put it over the edge.
  5. Spears suck, here's why and a few possible solutions

Big problem is that spears are handled as strictly a slow, clumsy reach weapon.

There is a reason that in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, for about 4000 years, with a little blip for about 400 years, spears were the dominant melee weapon of choice, and swords were a secondary sidearm.

Spear thrusting, needs to be much faster, and actually do real damage. That's the fix. Spear thrusts are quick, sudden jabs, not this long wind up and slow delivery. Fix that, and spears will be far more useful.

Once you raise your proficiency up with the weapon it gets to be quite a bit better on the ground but in general I agree with you that Spear thrusting should be faster I also think that unique to Spears they should increase the damage on short ranged stabs, there should be less of a penalty for stabbing someone without having full extension of the spear. The reason I say that is that in reality you can easily change your hand position on a spear where stabbing someone in close range isn't too much of an issue, it's far too penalizing in this game.
  6. What happened to my Nords?

If you open the Encyclopedia and navigate to Culture you'll see Nord as one of the option and there are some units called Skolder that are the Nords. Basically, the time period the game takes place, the Nords mostly haven't arrived yet.
  7. No sword sisters? No refugee women, nothing. What the hell?!?

Where the heck are all the women? It's not really Mount & Blade unless I can rescue peasant women from their life of drudgery and turn them into swift death on a white courser.

I hope this isn't some intended change, but rather a temporary absence.

They will be in the game, they are in the encyclopedia. They also have 300 bow skill so they will be the strongest ranged units in the game.
  8. Smithing Issue

Dear god I don't have to tolerance to get past about 90. I can't imagine the grinding you'd have to do to max it out. I agree with the OP it needs to be fixed.

It actually levels extremely quick once you get to about 125 or so. Once you have all the bars needed to craft the highest level items, they each give you a ton of XP, the early part is definitely a grind tough.
  9. Smithing Issue

I've started a new smithing character and have leveled it up to about 285 and haven't had issues unlocking new plans, might be a bug that is affecting you.
  10. Leveling up your character decreases your skill learning rate for all skills

It is not counter intuitive and it works as it is supposed to. If you're learning something new you are going to be picking up a lot of things quickly at the beginning but as you get closer to mastery of that thing the longer it takes to make small improvements.

The leveling system is also designed as such to promote concentration in a few key areas, they do not want your character to be a god at everything and frankly that's how I prefer it too because it provides replayability and I think that is simply good role playing design.

Your learning rate goes down with levels which means that especially when your learning rate is at the highest you should be focusing on the things you want to learn the most. You can keep your learning rate pretty high if you pump a lot of attribute points and learning points into a specific area.
  11. Does anyone else think spears are utterly useless?

Spears are amazing historically for a few reasons.

    1. Takes very little training, almost anyone can learn to use it and be pretty proficient with it.
    2. No weapon should have a reach advantage against it.
    3. can stab at any part of the body quickly so it's difficult to defend against.
    4. Can still be effective in close range by simply shortening up on the shaft

The last one, the game simply doesn't have this as an option currently though it could be programmed in by giving it an alternate weapon mode by pressing x and making the spear a lot shorter, it is something that Mordhau has as an example. If you sped up the stabs by a decent amount it would make it a lot more powerful and difficult to defend but when speaking of realism you also have to consider this is a game and 100% realism isn't always what is most fun, the game already does a pretty fantastic job achieving the realism/fun balance.
  12. Ranged weapons in realistic mode

Notice in the video the amount of strength and time it takes to pull a full force arrow and what it does to the armor. You want realism? This is it.
Keep in mind this is a 160lbs WARBOW.

That's what arrows do to hardened steel plate, which doesn't exist in this game because it is meant to take place in the early/mid Middle Ages. In this time period people didn't use many two handed melee weapons because arrows were too deadly, you needed a shield. Granted, I think bows need to be nerfed a bit in the game and I like the idea of glancing blows, just saying.
  13. Auto-block in singleplayer

My opinion as someone who played 200+ hours of Warband which is quite a bit but I know for some it's nothing, I always played with auto block and going to directional blocking here was jarring. I think the skill floor for defense in this game is higher than most, though using a shield definitely helps alleviate that. At the same time, actually getting the blocking down is immensely satisfying and the improved animations and everything going on was incredibly fun. I think it'd be cool to tie auto blocking to specific difficulty levels, it should definitely be an option in single player because you want people to enjoy the game.
  14. Which leveling system do you prefer Warband or Bannerlord?

There are some issues with the skill system in terms of how some of the non-combat skills are meant to be leveled up and I think the fact you cannot get any XP from arena matches is terrible and they need to increase the amount of XP you are able to get period but otherwise it seems fine in concept. It seems exceptionally difficult to raise a skill above 100 to the point that the game is already decided by that point. Leveling in general is too slow.
