  2. Question about the Crusades

They were ultimately unsuccessful in that they brought home very little actual wealth for the Crusaders and their overlords, as has been stated many times in this thread, and there was quite a bit of wasted manpower that went into it.

    Really?

Actually, as I counter-stated, Venice in particular reaped the benefits from trade rights and political influence in the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the same way as they reaped the benefits from the sack of Constantinople and the ensuing Latin Empire.  When the Kingdom of Jerusalem fell, the Venetians chose a bag of birds in one hand over the bird in the bush that was Jerusalem.

It is unfortunate for historiography of this period that stereotypes of crusaders being overly/blindly religious to the detriment of everything else persist.

I suppose you're right, at least where Venice is concerned. Though, to be fair, I never said that religion made them waste the manpower. The Crusades could have been even more profitable then they already were, but it was mostly logistical and tactical mistakes that led to the "waste" of the Crusader state's ability to wage war. And because they did not recognize their full potential, I still call them unsuccessful.

EDIT: Well, I guess they were successful, just not as successful as they could have been.

  4. Question about the Crusades

This has become a really interesting thread, btw guys.

Can I throw in a cat amongst the pigeons?  There seems to be an agreement that the Crusades were largely "unsuccesfull", yet the Kingdom of Jerusalem stood for nearly 200 years!  That's not an insignicant time frame (I'm sitting at a desk in Melbourne, Australia - a country which was created only a hundred years ago, right now!).  Yeah, they lost it later, but still, unsuccesfull?

    Cheers,
    Steve

    Good Luck to Australia though!
  5. Surrendering is stupid-heres why

Very true. The main reason one would surrender was to save the lives of his soldiers, and eliminate the costly process of retraining and re-equipping new recruits (or, more importantly, new knights). In M&B, surrendering is just a way cop out of a battle with no benefits. Ideally, you should be able to set a location where your men will regroup in the event of your surrender, where you can go pick them up after you are freed.
  6. Irish research

Well, Dublin wasn't around at that time....I know that an important site/settlement was Tara.  However, some sources I have read simply said that the site was a ceremonial site and symbolic capital of Ireland while others say there was actually a town there.  I don't know which is true though.
Not a whole lot is known about it but I think that it's generally accepted that there was some form of settlement there and that it was an important symbolic capital. Wasn't Ireland also broken into several small Kingdoms as well during this time? And I think that they were all governed from Tara, or it was a meeting place of sorts.

Yes, Tara was the (mostly symbolic) seat of the High King, who was, at least in the fifth century, supposed to be chosen by rotation. That is, each miniature kingdom in Ireland, (I think there were six or seven main ones), would have a turn at supplying the high king, and when he died, the position would pass on to the next kingdom. (As far as I remember.)

    what kind of things?

Nearly all the animals that the Greeks thought were good enough for him. Along with a great multitude of mythological women.
  8. Irish research

If you want to know a little bit more about dark ages Ireland - I suggest reading How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill. It's essentially about the flowering of Irish literary culture (or rather, their newfound ability to copy classical literature), at the very same time that Rome was falling. The book continues to follow the Irish civilization up until about the time of the Viking invasions.

For immediate help, I'm sure I don't know much about 700 C.E., but in the fifth century, some of the important Irish places (I can't remember which ones were towns and which ones were religious sites), were Tara, Cruachan, Uinsnech, and Cashel. The Irish were relatively safe until the viking invasions later on, so it's probably safe to say that at least some of these places survived into the seventh century.

I changed mine to say, "**** you, I'm leaving," as soon as I started my own nation. It's funny when they then reply, "Good travels to you, Sultan Jafar."

Talk to the Marshall before you leave to scout and ask what he is planning to do, or something like that. Usually, he'll say that he's moving to siege a castle, and you can meet him there later.
  15. How to Cavalry charge?

Nah, it seems like your starting out fine. The light cavalry units, the ones that ride horses that aren't chargers or warhorses, naturally don't plow through many troops, and are best used for a quick charge followed by a regroup. Chargers and warhorses, with their higher charge stats, will kill one troop and possibly knock down 2-3 more, making them very easy targets. However, if you're already using heavy cavalry, I don't really know what to say--I consistently wipe the map with no more than 40 mamlukes, even when I'm up against armies five times my size.
  16. Rebeling, becoming king.

You cannot replace one of the game's king, and you cannot rebel without losing the fief's you already have under Swadia. At least, not under the version I'm currently playing.

    Lance: Manual (Hard)
    Block: Automatic

    Battle Size: 341

    Total Difficulty: 151%
    Its very good fun.
  19. Being a mercenary, how do i get out of it?

Unless I'm mistaken, the pay you receive for being a mercenary is dependent on the number of troops you have in your army, and the level of the troops in said army. Its not very good if you're running around with 20 militiamen, but if you can get a few dozen knights, being a mercenary is actually a pretty good deal. It rarely covers the weekly cost of troops, but loot and prisoners can pick up the slack, in my experience.
