    Hi guys;

    Now this is a blast from the past! I discovered a Taleworlds notification while tweaking some email filters and had a look at this thread - I see that there is some confusion!

    Neither Mat nor I have been active in developing this for several years. There was some interest from other members of the community over 2014 - some people reached out to Mat and I was copied in on the messages. The gist of them was that he was too busy to work on this and was happy for others to continue development as long as everything was attributed correctly.

    Personally, I don't have a problem with people reusing parts of the code in their own work, either - I'm going to assume that Mat is happy with that, too, considering that we had chosen a BSD 2-clause license to cover our work  (here, basically just means 'use what you want, how you want, but include attribution in the form of the license.txt'). That doesn't necessarily cover everything included, though - the module system itself is property of Taleworlds and the other projects used are the property of their authors and retain their original licenses and copyrights. We can speak for only the resources unique to the Gathering Storm mod.

    I've set-up the website to redirect to a new repository on GitHub, here, that includes all the source files and full commit history. The assets are here, as stated in the README file they are not included with the repository. Note that I did rewrite the commit history to clean things up and reduce the size of the repository!

    If you want to start with Git, I'd suggest the GitHub Windows client. There are plenty resources out there for learning how to use it - see here, here, here or here.

    If anybody can edit Mat's original post to reflect all that new information, please do! I've redirected the website here to the GitHub repository and have included most of the necessary information in there, alongside a clone of Mat's post.

    I likely won't be returning to develop this, though I'm not sure about Mat - he might come back for Bannerlord!

    The absolute best in my opinion is vim, mentioned in my last post :smile:. It's got a steep learning curve, but once you get used to using hotkeys and one-letter command shortcuts, you basically become the text editor - each operation takes a quarter of the time that it would take to click the buttons in a full IDE-type program and it has pretty much every feature you'd ever need, including the ability to compare files (also known as 'diff', or differential analysis). Vim now includes gvim which is basically the same program with a GUI wrapper, giving you a menu bar. It's nice to get started with, but the main power of the program is in it's shortcuts and commands.

    Emacs is very similar to vim - it's a bit more modular, and certainly a bit heavier. Again, I linked to it in my last post.

    Notepad++ is absolutely the best GUI text editor for Windows-only (though it does work under Mac and Linux with WINE). It supports pretty much everything that you'd want to write in any programming or scripting language. It acts just like notepad, but with tabbing and many, many more features. Easier than vim or emacs, but also much more GUI stuff so it's a little slower to work with. Amazing for novices or those that don't really like hotkeys, though.

    SciTE is a nice little source editor for on-the-go. It's very small and light, and does the most common tasks with minimum hassle. I've not used it all that much, but it's certainly worth a look if you just want a basic editor like notepad, but with programming or scripting features like syntax highlighting and Find and Replace.

    It looks like the python version you installed may be too new - version 3 of Python is incompatible with much of version 2. Double-check that you installed version 2.7 and if not, uninstall the one you currently have and install the version I just linked. :smile:

    Also, when you installed Git Gui did you select any options at installation time (referring to the line endings option)? If so, you'll need to reinstall git with the default settings - things can get a little difficult with line endings, as each operating system has slightly different code to signify one and git has to convert between the different line endings at each step.

    Otherwise, there are two possibilities: make sure you are running the .bat script and not the .sh scripts (right click and open with notepad, the .bat script has mostly uppercase letters and a lot of REM commands and the shell script has a lot of lowercase letters and lines with '#' before them). The .sh scripts are made for the server and my Linux system, they won't work properly on Windows. :smile:

    If it's none of the above, it's probably an issue with the way git gave you those files - in that case, you may need to delete your clone on the website and try it again. That would mean that the commands I told you to run broke because of the specific configuration :sad: (I'll look into it if so).


    Oh, and by the way, guys - note that the latest development version of TGS is available here, too - you don't need to compile it yourself if you really don't want to. This 7zip file is a snapshot taken at 12am and 12pm of the compiled mod in it's current state at that time, no guarantee that it'll work (if not, try at 1pm or 1am after the next noon or midnight :smile:). It's all done automatically by the server, and contains the full mod that you can just extract into a copied version of 'The Gathering Storm' directory in your Warband Modules folder.



    EDIT: Ah, sorry kamskywalker - I didn't see your post. IDLE is really icky, yes, I'd highly recommend Notepad++ on Windows (or, if you really want to learn what the pros use, try gvim or emacs. They both have pretty steep learning curves, but are well worth it if you see yourself spending a lot of time in text editors).

    And my avatar? :razz: That was my Khergit warlord from the first M&B. I should probably update it with something newer, I've not done any texturing or image editing in ages, though.

    enak, your own clone will be pretty out-of-date now. You can do the following in Git Bash to bring it back up to date:

    First, make sure you've not made any changes that you want to keep. If you have, don't do the first command (though the other commands may fail, if they do then PM me)

    ElazuHP, make sure when you start the game you check it's in DirectX9 mode - in DirectX7 mode, it won't show any weave effects. If that's not the issue, you should redownload the mod as you may be missing some resources.

    I'm pretty sure that it's possible to add new races in Warband, but I've not really got any idea how to go about it - that'd be getting into the meshes/animation side, I've not experimented with those much. Maybe mat'll have some idea about that :smile:

    As for donations... well, I certainly wouldn't refuse money - things are pretty tight at the moment for everybody, I'd imagine, plus I'm just about to start my last year as a full time student. My PayPal email is just my forum name at gmail.com, but I'm not entirely sure that I've done enough to deserve it - Mat really laid down the core of the mod. I just manage the server stuff, some lore work and suggesting a new feature here and there with a little scripting thrown in.

    I'm doing this because I enjoy it, though! I'm sure there'd be much better business ideas if I was trying to make money. :razz: Donations or not, I'll do my part in ensuring that TGS gets better and better!

    What tripped me up was Galad - I always read his full name as Galadried, it was only on the fifth or sixth reread that I read his name properly and found it was actually Galadedrid. That's not stopped my inner voice calling him 'Galadried Damodred', though. :???:

    I'm not sure how that ended up happening :???: are you sure you didn't delete the last comma? Or make any other changes? You can always click Branch -> Reset... and hard reset to go back to the original files.

    Fantastic! Be sure to check out the Ideas and Todo page if you're not sure what needs done. Typo fixes and WoT-ified dialogue, new faces and equipment tweaking are all great places to start! Just be sure to 'commit' and 'push' when you're finished adding a feature or editing a section, this'll store it on your version of the mod on the server so you can propose adding it to the main mod.

    I've started doing another overhaul of the lords & ladies in preparation for adding more story up to the Last Battle. Hopefully we can get the
    split of the White Tower, the Andoran and Cairhienen wars and rebellions and Masema's Dragonsworn
    integrated into game. The new scenes that Mat is working on should really help with this! I've also created another fork of the mod that I'm using to clean up the module system, we're going to see how easy it is to update it and, if it's not too difficult, we'll probably use the cleaner version to make modding easier.

    Thanks for the correction! Added to the wiki, though note that any user can edit the Wiki - there should be an 'Edit Page' button to the right of the page if you are logged in. The first clone will take a while - git makes every little change reversible, so a lot of the data is redundant. Clones, pulls and pushes after that are much, much smaller and should only take a few seconds to a few minutes :smile:

    It's a very common theme - the battle of good and evil, light and darkness. That's what all the holy books of Abrahamic religions focus on. Not to mention the elements from Arthurian, Norse and other such legends from which WoT was conceived - it's perfectly reasonable that another such story exists, with other elements and other ideas.

    You mean that you want to start as an Aielman, or within Rhuiden? It's a good idea, maybe I'll look at improving character creation and offering more options.

    Okay guys, the TGS Development Website is up for public business. Whether you want to lurk and watch development happen in real time or add new features and bug fixes yourself, or even just work on your own sandbox version of TGS you can do so. The first thing I recommend that you do is to read the tutorial on our wiki. You're free to edit the Wiki to improve it, once you've made an account.

    Automatic builds of the current development snapshot (with no guarantee that they'll work) will be built at 12pm and 12am London time (GMT, currently BST). You can download the snapshot here.

    Here's hoping that we can have some nice surprise new features for when Mat gets back :smile: If any of you guys need any help, send me a PM.

    Oh, and if you have your own mod and like the idea of this shoot me a PM and we'll talk about it when he's back.

    That's certainly planned, but I was meaning more subtle differences - though I split villagers into different types recently, meaning that you'll see actual Aiel civilians in Aiel towns and villages!

    It would actually be pretty interesting to see if we could get some Blight dynamics implemented - some way to have the Blight advance toward the south.
