    Version 0.955 bug reports

I hesitate to call it a bug, really, but in the end decided I could live with it......

I updated to 955 from (IIRC) my 953 install and successfully continued the save game after seeing the "Restore" option showed no incompatibility. I've taken on the task of getting Lady Isolla on to the Swadian throne, and my character had reached Level 20. In the course of trying to get money together for more troops we visited Tihr, and I decided to assess trade prices. So far so normal.

But as I was doing so I got the loudest ever "level-up" cymbal noise, so loud I nearly jumped out of my skin then the messages started scrolling down the screen:

    You have reached level 21
    You have reached level 22
    You have reached level 23
    :
    :
    :
    all the way to
    You have reached level 41

Somewhere in there was a message saying "You have gained 1,473,000 experience" - seems a bit high just for doing some window-shopping.

Sure enough, I went to the Character screen and I had 20 attribute points, 20 skill points and 200 weapon points to distribute. As I said, I decided to live with it

    Tournments? WTF

I've had some 2h vs bow tournament rounds - both ways. Either way it seems the AI has an "unfair" advantage. But once my character levels up and gains some skills, I can usually win either way round. My favourite tournament victory was when I had a 2h sword (no horse) in a 1v1 with a horse archer. It was tough catching the bastard, but I finally got there and cut him to pieces in a corner, with about 1 hp of health left. I've put more points into athletics since then

For me, spawning with horse and bow is a guaranteed win. I rarely bet on tournaments though, and when I do it's just at the first stage - I fight them more to earn proficiency in a wider range of weapons, and I wouldn't do that if it was possible to choose weapons. Random weapons is fine by me, although some rounds can be embarrasing/frustrating...

    Leveling Up feeling

When I level up I feel a surge of indecision.

That's exactly how it gets me, too. In the early stages it's not so bad (only another 100 dead looters before the next level-up ~D), but by the time you're needing 10000+ exp for the next level, you have to think a bit about where the skills are going - I often think "I need more strength for the better armour, but I also need to up my riding, I can't take enough prisoners, and my inventory is FULL already....."

I've seen some great suggestions in this thread though.

    * More books would be good
    * Extra "trainers" around the map (love the Khergit horseman idea ....) - I thought maybe to add a random element, some of the "travellers" you meet (and usually ignore ) in taverns might turn out to be "Zomborg the Master Swordsman" who can train you in 1H/2H weapons etc - I don't know, maybe a mega-hard arena match with him.... possibilities are endless.
    * Quests with different rewards - so far we can get relations, cash, exp, renown - why not skill points or proficiencies too?
    * I like the idea of medicinal herbs - maybe they only grow in one or two (random) villages? Great for a healing boost (but should maybe "go off" like beef does now).
    * Skill boosts with experience like Triosta suggests - would be a good one - even if it was a "backward trade" - ie you reach say 300 proficiency with a bow, then backtrade say 50 pts of proficiency into 1 point of power draw

M&B is a candidate in the Golden Joystick Awards

Wny vote? We have tempered heavy bastard swords and can put our claimant on the throne by FORCE

    okay, I voted too

    What is your favorite polls?

Well, I voted three, but only on the grounds it would probably provoke something amusing

    Version .955 Changes

    Linehand 说:
I think it is a waste of a wonderful opportunity to add more depth to the game by adding some involving rescue scenarios to get your companions back.

Quite agree - one thing got me in .95-something or other earlier, I saw a city with King Yaroglek listed as a prisoner, so I thought "What better excuse to go visit the dungeons?". Did the usual bribing of the guard to get inside, and managed to speak to Yaroglek in the dungeons. But I couldn't really do much, except ask him "What are you doing here?"

Obviously he replied "I'm being held prisoner, what does it look like?"....

.... BUT it woud have been nice if he'd continued with "For God's sake get me out of here before my idiot Marshall destroys the Kingdom and I'll pay YOU the ransom money!", leading on to a jail-break mission somehow. Or even (if he doesn't like you much) ... "but I'm sure the Marshall will have me rescued or ransomed any day now".

It would make a cool mission, maybe get into the town at night with a couple of companions, break into the jail, fight your way through the streets to freedom.... jump over the barbed wire on a spirited motorbike.... etc etc

But I'm sure the devs have considered all this and have it in their TODO list  [/gratuitous creep mode]

    What is your favourite weapon?

Has to be a bow as first choice, I just love horse-archery  Up to war bow as soon as levels/skills allow, and as many large bags of khergit arrows as I can carry, with more in inventory in case I need to restock...

I'm more open on melee weapons, but had to vote for polearms in the end - I like a nice long poleaxe, and one character I raised only ever used staffs (ending up with an iron one) for melee/jousting, but that was more for the challenge, really. Sometimes I go for bastard swords, though, they are satisfyingly easy to use.

Axes are too slow -- or rather my characters tend to be too slow to use axes -- I don't put enough into agility usually, focussing on INT and STR.

    Newbie Questions

Thus all the time you've spent increasing your pole arm score will be for naught.
If you get and use a two-handed ax you can use it both mounted and while on foot.  The skill you learn while riding will work while you are sieging.

Whilst this is true, there is another solution, the one I have tried with quite good success on one of my earlier characters.... the POLEAXE. You can "joust" with it on horseback, and it's a axe on a long stick for melee use on foot -- but the polearm skill you learn jousting is still benefitting you on foot. But often I just get lazy trying other weapons, and grab a tempered heavy bastard sword as soon as I can find one

Personally I like to bring up my characters as hore-archers, with the best bow I can handle (according to levelling up and skills), plus two large bags of Khergit arrows (56 shots in total, and +3 damage), then back it up with one of those melee weapons I mentioned above. For tactical variety I like to keep a third set of arrows AND a decent shield in inventory.

As for archers.... well all I can say is that when my character goes down it's usually because there's an arrow stuck in him rather than a blade

    .953 Training Grounds Trainer Difficulty

I thik instead of pots it needs proper targets - straw men, big bullseye rings, etc.

Yes, and the place to do it is in the castles.... have you noticed how a lot of castles have archery targets set up in the courtyard? These actually work -- fire a few arrows it will give you a score, and the range. It's great for actual practice (for yourself) but unfortunately the character gets no rewards from it, no experience, no proficiency. Still, it's a bit of fun....

    Stop this somehow Armagan

Who cares, the feds offer $50 for every pirate we report

For some reason a little sound-overlay played in my brain when I read this.... "You better not be a bounty hunter.." it said

    0.952 text disappearance

I'm getting this, too, but now in .953 - it's made my current game unplayable, as I'm not getting any info at all on battle map or campaign map

If it's any use for diagnostics for the devs, I've found that if I launch my save game with this problem, then leave it and start a new game with a new character, the problem persists. If I relaunch the game and start a new character, all works as it used to. BUT if I then reload my "bugged" game, the problem returns, and stays if I then go back and reload the "new" game. Confusing and irritating (the problem, but probably my account of it too )

EDIT: DOH! I did mean .952 after all....

    Are Khergits overpowered?

    Tostig 说:
If you're going to try and take them on with a cavalry dominated force then you're better off going all-out khergit and trying to beat them in terms of numbers.

Just what I was thinking -- when time comes to take on the Khergits, the best strategy is to simply out-Kherg them. I always make a point of looking for those farmers in the taverns in Khergit territory, and make sure I have a few Khergit villages very friendly to me, so I can recruit there when I need to. I always make my character a horse-archer type anyway, it's just the way I like my fun, so properly kitted out (currently 6 power draw, 5 horse archery, 2 lge bags khergit arrows + war bow, 5 riding and a LOT of pathfinding + a spirited courser) and with a  nice fast army of KVHAs (I never bother with lancers, they die like flies) I sweep the Steppes clean.

A good reason not to opress your peasants

Personally I think the King took a fancy to one of the peasant women, then her father and brothers came back from the fields with their pitchforks demanding he make an honest woman of her

    Marshall?

    Saber Cherry 说:
I am just another vassal of the Swadians.  In my game, Marshall changes all the time, every week or less.  Occasionally there is an election - maybe once every 3 months.  But typically I just get messages that the Marshall changed.

Does that fit what others observe?  It certainly does not make a whole lot of sense.

I've had a similar problem as a Nord vassal - I've been through spells when the Marshal changed every day, which makes it really annoying on quests --> get a new Marshall --> "Report to the Marshall" quest comes up --> get a new Marshall --> quest failed.... then "Report to the NEW Marshall"...  gets really annoying with a string of failed quests you can't do anything about.

Insufficient Vendor Cash for Viable Trading

I've been having some trouble with this as well, especially when you up your trade skill. I'm now faced with a sell price for velvet in Reyvadin IIRC which is over 1600 denar - the only way to recoup the value is by exchanging it for other goods, which you then have to go and sell somewhere else....

Sometimes when I'm due for major expenditure (like all my horses are lame and I need a new spirited courser, or my heroes deserve an armour/weapon upgrade etc) then I'll maybe get some spice from Tulga, go to Praven and buy up all the expensive stuff I need and pay with spice, hopefully with things nicely balanced so I clear out the merchants' cash as well. Another thing I've found useful is to keep buying all my food from my own fiefs, even when it's ridiculously expensive. This leaves quite a wodge of cash in the village, and I can occasionally dump some high-value goods there and get the cash back. It all helps the fiefs get richer, as well, as they have high-value stuff to take to market.

But still, ransoms are a great source of income once you get into the habit of capturing Lords and Kings, though I do try to keep that restricted to Lords who're already pissed at me...  I do like to play for the honour, and some enemy Lords have been "let go" so many times it gets quite funny - I roll up with an army of 500+ (I'm Marshall for the Nords at the moment), speak to an enemy Lord with a typical party size and he says "Good to see you again...." WTF?
  16. Macsen

    Captured Lords Questions

@Darkjedi - I don't think it's your level or prisoner management that's the problem. I was capturing Lords when I only had room for 10 prisoners (ie 2nd rank in that skill), and I'm still not up to level 26 with this character.... at the risk of sounding daft, you are playing .95x, I assume?
  17. Macsen

    Captured Lords Questions

I've captured King Yaroglek (twice ) and King Harlaus in my current game, well worth a Kings ransom (about 12K for Yaroglek, 16K for Harlaus), but I've noticed that if I refuse a fellow Lord's offer to "take them off my hands" they usually escape within a couple of days, so it really could be your "last chance" if that crops up. Unless anyone has had better luck than me.

It may be coincidence, but I also think they escape from your party more easily if you have a lot of other prisoners .... maybe they make some sort of escape committee to help their Lords get away? This would figure if prisoner management is a factor.

    Question about Marshall

My character has just been made Marshal, and has about 14 parties tagging along, including the King and one of my official "enemies".... the real problem is I'm with the Nords, and my character has a largely cavalry party, and a lot of Pathfinding. It takes forever waiting for the footsloggers to catch up

With my speed I've earned pretty good relations as I've saved most of them from being annihilated at some time in the past, they all owe me one, so sieges are pretty well attended

    Traitor to the Motherland

As of .951 (maybe 950 as well, but I didn't spend long enough on that...) Lords from defeated kingdoms will join other factions. I don't know if there's any way the player can influence it - I wondered if maybe you could recruit a Lord who was one of your prisoners, but doesn't look like it so far.

On the one hand this is cool - more armies for your faction.... but the downside is more Lords in the queue for the next fief

    Town improvements

I would also like the appearance of bandits to occur in narrow alleyways

Yes, that would be fun - I always thought you should have a chance of being mugged if you use one of the city chests. After all, people can see you in the street dropping those bags of unsold spice and stockpiles of honey into the chests, it's only natural some of them might want to grab the key off you
