The old discussion thread (now locked)

Really great job on this mod, Spanky -- it's brought me back to M&B after a long hiatus.  I don't know if this has been suggested before, but you should look into getting Raz's armors that he made for Holy War mod and sticking them in this mod.  Not the armors and weapons he released to the public a while back, but the really good stuff I think he was saving for his mod.  Sadly, it really seems like Holy War won't be made, so maybe he'll be open to letting you use his resources.

any progress so far?  this mod looks fantastic in my opinion.  the work on the armors especially is top notch.

yeah, you'd definitely need an aventail for that first helmet.  Any helmet model in M&B without a neck and collar covering makes your character look like a pencil-neck dweeb, as opposed to the badass he's meant to be (because of the whole hair-negating effects of helmets in M&B).

If Armagan was to include a new faction in an update, what would you want?

Didn't read all the replies, so it might have been mentioned, but a medieval Ethiopian-esque faction would be cool.  If anyone has played Broken Crescent mod for MTW2 you'll know what I'm talking about.  However, a proper Muslim-like faction would fit the best, especially if modeled after the Ayyubids/Mameluks.  Good heavy cav, mediocre horse archers, axe-armed infantry, but overall shabby at tactical defense.  You could only join their ranks by becoming essentially a slave-soldier to the king.  Get paid with better armor, weapons, and titles instead of denars.

Version .960, What's new, What's fixed, and What isn't fixed.

So the new mo-cap animations aren't in this release, and this is going to be the last beta?  Well then when are we going to get them?  Is it being saved for M&B:2 ??

On the subject of helmets, it's been slow-going for the past few days, but I'm hoping to have at least some meshes to show of in a week or so.  Then, I realized something while playing .952 last night.  With the new face-generator, you have to option to scale your face width, and the helmet you're wearing changes accordingly.  I don't know whether or not this changes the process of making new models, but I'm going to go ahead and assume it doesn't and keep working...

    EDIT:

Had a good little run today, and here's what I'm thinking.  It's just the model, no skin, but it'll give you an idea of what I had in mind as far as Slavic and Russian armor influence go.  I just started it, so if you spot something that should be changed/improved, it's not too late to tell me.

Is that a bow and shield held in the same hand?

I'd like to contribute what I can, which is not much.  I can model and skin some helmets for this mod, possibly for the Vaegir and Nordic sides.  I've got a grip of Osprey books on the period you seem to be shooting for.

What sort of influence did you want the Vaegir to have?  Eastern Europe/Russia? Are the Nords going to look more like 13th century Scandinavians/Normans or will you keep their Viking-ish appearance?

And also, wouldn't these things be randomly generated, like the majority of Mount & Blade's mechanics and "story"?  As in, there's no point compiling one list, because everyone else's experiences will be different.

So, are you deciding on a technological time-period for this mod?  As in taking out any armor or weapons that are too indistinct or anachronistic?  If so, what is that time-period?

So, I know I'm supposed to be working on the banners, but I decided to start doing something else for this mod:  Helmets...  I've always thought M&B needed some historically accurate and cool looking helmets, so I cracked open some of my Osprey books (RIP Angus McBride ), and picked a few to start making.

I've spent the last two days teaching myself how to use Wings3D and how to unwrap the mesh, blah, blah, blah.  After that, how to get them into the game, etc.

So, here's my first modeling attempt...

Those of you with the Osprey Elite "Normans' book might recognize this one.  It has a few glitches in it but, now that I know how to do it, I'm gonna start cranking out some more 11th century helms.  If you want em Morg, you're welcome to use em, if not, then they'll just be for my own enjoyment.  I've still got a lot of things to learn as far as skinning goes, but I also have a lot of free time on my hands.

P.S.  I'm still working on banners, but it's slow going.  I've decided I'll just reskin the ones that are horribly out of context for 11tch century England (like anything with scimitars).  Most of em are okay, I think, but I'll try to add a few more that have Northern Christian motifs and symbols...

    That's all.

Very nice!  Any screens you could show us?  What features have been completed so far?    Are you going for a gritty realistic take on the nords or are you bending a little more towards fantasy?

Any plans to continue this beautiful package and port to .9x ?

I tried to load it up again, without any luck of course...  Is there a simple operation I can use to make these textures usable in .901?

I like where you guys are taking this!

Perhaps it would be possible to add in new items or NPCs that could fit into this whole survivalist motif...

Relics that have a permanent morale bonus?

Camp-Follower Women?  (If you feel comfortable making it a little more adult than most mods)

Scouts for hire at taverns or wandering about the wilderness?  (Pathfinding and Spotting should be very important in this mod perhaps?)

Old Crones or witches that have a great set of medicinal skills but lower your army's morale?

    This mod is for .900

M&B: Graphical Enhancement - OLD THREAD - see new thread in Pioneer's Guild

    Noticed an error...

The book textures have been narfed.  They now appear to be made entirely of what looks like wicker...

And I do have to agree that the world looks quite dark now...  Which doesn't jive so well with the fact that people and horses still have a lighter tint to them than the world around them.

SP Dark Ages Northumbria 1069 ~ Troop Tree on 13

Looking at the banners file a little closer, I don't think I'll be able to make any tri-pointed or quarter-circle banners unless someone goes ahead and makes a new flag model.  The banners file is actually kind of complicated -- it seems quite random.  All the textures in the dds file appear as rectangles, but are then manipulated into other shapes (two-pointed and square) by the world-map flag model...

I'll keep tinkering around, but in the meantime if anyone has images of saxon or norman flag designs of the period that would be great...

    nijis 说:
Jush, it would be great to get some new skins from you. One thing that would great would be period Norman and Viking pennants for the map icons -- usually three-forked, as I understand. I suspect that you could probably accomplish that without changing the mesh by using transparency. I'll try to dig up some images.

I'll see what I can cook up.  Might take me a while to bone up on my skills again, so what sort of time frame are we working on?  You can PM the details if you prefer.

It's alright by me if you use my shields from BfS, although better versions of them can already be found in Native, perhaps not accuracy-wise but at least in terms of the quality of the model and skin.

I've been lurking around this mod for a while, waiting for it to turn sour like all the others seem to do, but fortunately it hasn't.  You genuinely seem to want to A.) make this a coherent and unified modification and B.) actually FINISH it

If I may just add in my two cents worth, and I only do this with mods that I think are going to be well-done and very worthwhile, I think some attention to the aesthetics of the game could be very beneficial towards immersing the player into the game-world.  The shields from BfS are just the start of it...  Perhaps you could include some of the enhanced weapon models released by Talon (especially the axes and spears), and perhaps even ask Raz if you could use some of his helmets and armors from his Holy War mod that has been put on indefinite hold (it would be worth asking, he has made some gorgeous Norman-style helms).  Even just paying special attention to assigning which factions where what armor and clothes can really make a mod come together visually (see:  Battle for Sicily).  Perhaps you already know this and are working towards it (or just saving it for a later version of the mod), but it never hurts to reiterate.

That being said, if you would like anything skinned (that's all I know), I'd be glad to lend a hand to this mod.
