  2. The Horde Lands v1.22 released!!

    Hi,

    thanks for creating the mod — until Wedding Dance 1.0 is released I'm going to explore The Horde Lands and hope for lots of fun. Up until now it is fun.

    A few bugs found:
    — Lords stucking suck. They freeze-run on rivers, especially near the salt mine;
    — Assassination quests given by tavern keepers are bugged, as sometimes you just can't find the victim no matter how you try. In towns it looks wierdy-wierd when you have to kill some buglers attacking you right in front of the guards and townsfolk;
    — I have no items on Black Market traders and in Seahaven (only steeds are for sale). Besides I had to sneak into Seahaven, at least for the first time. I thought neutral towns are neutral all the way because you can't screw your relations by attacking their forces...

    A few suggestions:
    — Creatures in the Dragon Death quest just keep spawning unexpectedly. At least make them respawn when I'm not in the room, otherwise it's an awful game design;
    — Skeletons, especially ghosts, are too vulnerable. Even Skeletal Captains die in great numbers. They probably have steeds with very low charge. On contrary zombies rock the place all over. Too bad for the balance;
    — Can you make special armor, like orc armor, restricted to the race? Besides companions look in them like they practice the orc non-race Blinding-Helmet-Fight-Style. Not critical cause funny, but that's just for the first time;
    — Boomsticks are too rare. I managed to find only a single one for like a dozen of games;
    — Salt mine income should be greatly increased, otherwise it makes no sense to use it. Selling prisoners so far turned out to be the most profitable action in the game. I just equip all companions with overpowered balanced iron staffs and give them charge-friendly steeds... It turned me into a millionaire in two weeks...

    Let me share my thoughts on how this works:

    People who can produce such a magnificent result for free, just to share it with others, need appreciation, not donations. Donations are not that kept it running until now.

    Still, when mod will reach the release number, all bugs fixed and everything the maker wanted to add is added, a real popularity will come, spread, and the publisher should come buying exclusive rights for this particular version, raising popularity even further after publishing this mod as a separate game. These funds could come in handy and stimulate towards Wedding Dance 2 or other great mod, yes, but no donations could get the mod finished, or make it better.

    Look at Thomas Biskup. His ADoM is a masterpiece done for postcards. Until a publisher will come to fund a video game on the ADoM engine (port entirely simply adding  graphics) so that Thomas could stop to work for living and do Jade at his own leisure, Jade will never reach the level of ADoM. There were donations, and asks for them. To no use.

    P.S. Even M&B itself, by the way, at it's core, was made by an enthusiastic couple. Not an oversized team of developers, testers, managers, et cetera ad nauseam.

    Thanks Fawzia, although I'm not saying music is bad, or I don't like it. My point is that it is good, just has some "spirit" lacking. Could be better.

    Oh, I forgot to mention horses: Heavy Destriers are very good for everything! But my suggestion is to keep it balanced instead of just sticking to destriers. At this point I see no point to differ mounts for horse archers (should be fastest, low charge and armor), horse crossbowmen (should be fast AND maneuvrable to stop or accelerate almost instantly, low charge and armor), and horse chargers (high charge, high armor). It may be good to have best types of mounts for each type listed.

    Obviously arabian horses should be literally suffering under heavy knights arses.  :oops: Now they do not fit real battle at all.  :cry:

    I'm catching up with the new version:

    1. Thanks again for all the work you are doing. It is greatly appreciated.
    2. Thanks for making barbarians hang-on running in the start instead of standing still.  :grin:
    3. New music is fine, although not awesome. There's a field for improvement with it.
    4. New sounds, drunkards and critters are OK, although I have doubts the realizm benefits they bring cost the time spent on them... Maybe you will attach some quests to them later?
    5. New interface is awful. Eye-non-friendly, causing some data on screen unreadable. At least give an option to preserve old one if user decides.
    6. New items are OK, arena armor turned for better while helmet improvements are doubtful.
    7. Chariots are buggy. Every time Rogan riding it, he starts a fight he crushes through my infantry columns, and uses sword instead of the bow at long range, idiot!  :evil:
    And I killed racers in the 3-rd guildmaster's quest with javelins BEFORE the match. Gee...
    8. New NPCs, GOOD! Only saw the amason bastard hoplite so far, and kinda liked that.
    9. Please update the cost of hirelings with removable armor. For, say, 2000 you get a full set of plated armor for yourself. Er... Fawzia, you're OK. :roll:
    10. Minotaur-head helmet that weights 5.0 requires no strength. Staisie goes with it with strength 6! Not fun.
    11. Shields need a re-balance. Why 94 size shields are crappy? Where's my plate-door infantry column?!  :twisted:
    12. For Prid's arse sake, tweak the women armor with +40 to head armor down 10 times already!
    13. Thanks for tweaking down cloister archers. Was kinda bored with their heavy armor not dropping... Any luck in adding the backspace view to these battles?

    This post is for everyone. Free knowledge so to say.

    For some time now I've been working on finding ways to improve the existing damage system. The reason is that I like the illusion of realism in M&B that will not affect game mechanics (not to confuse with the realism itself, cause it spoils all the fun). Now my vision is that different types of armor offer different protection, not some type of protection level or value. So I decided to re-calculate the soak and reduction effects to:

    1. Preserve the initial balance so that there's no need to tweak damage of the weapons;
    2. Make cutting attacks severely affected by armor, with a tendency to ignore it at tremendous levels (Berserker's axe should crack plates easily);
    3. Make piercing weapons to be most ignoring to armor, while tending to inflict moderate damage;
    4. Make blunt weaponry fully stopped by armor value, with a drawback of fracturing effect of crushing attacks (deformed plates do crush innards and crack bones);

    Low armor values are typical for soft armor like tanned leather and furs that should handle equivalent blunt and cutting attacks pretty easy, giving min to none protection from piercing weapons. With the damage growing the protection should be minimized from all types of weapons, with cutting damage being most stopped.

    Chain, ring and scale armor should protect from equivalend cutting damage almost entirely, while being helpless against even mild pierce attacks. It should get really much worse with greater blunt damage though because of the crushing effect, while tending to average with cutting attacks.

    Plate armor should reflect all harm up to a certain level of effect. Piercing should break in first to give reasonable impact, following with cutting attacks of fearsome force to neglect protection, finishing with blunt damage with a tremendous crushing effect of innards pressed by deformed plates (or knocking -off effect of brain damage).

    Long experimenting hours ended up with a formula of in module.ini:

    armor_soak_factor_against_cut      = 0.95
    armor_soak_factor_against_pierce    = 0.65
    armor_soak_factor_against_blunt    = 1

    armor_reduction_factor_against_cut      = -1
    armor_reduction_factor_against_pierce    = 1
    armor_reduction_factor_against_blunt    = -5

    Don't skrew it by having soak and reduction switched places, and you will get:

    Good armor will give you more protection, but still...
    Siege crossbows will end up in killing someone in a light armor with a single strike.
    Heavy sledgehammers and Greataxes in hands of a berserker will end up killing with a single blow.
    Multiple arrows and bolts in time will dissect even a cracken shell armor (when they have enough power to pierce it).

    Thanks for keeping it right up, Rocha. I won't stop giving my thanks until you keep improving the mod.

    A couple of additional comments and suggestions:

    — No 'backspace' map in Cloister, Church, Cathedral sieges, witch-burning village — means no ability to give expanded commands to warriors though not deadly, but a little troublesome. Any particular reason for having it disabled?
    — Women formal plates need to be fixed. +40 head armor rules too much, especially for non-mounted party, and I'm having a company of men, wearing those. It's also making during party duels very long, when weapons are not maxed.
    — I'm thinking about the price on Lordly Heavy Plate Armor or Lordly Fur and Plate and it drives me crazy. An empire could be bought for those denars! A king is worth selling like 12,500. Items above 100,000 are nonsense... Needs to be tweaked imho.
    — Dranton, Xerina, Cradus! We need those for army, please make them recruitable.
    — Stripping and executing lords is most wanted. Not sure if killing some lords would greatly affect gameplay, but their weapons and armor make no huge difference, while bringing plenty of satisfaction. Having lord to hate you for stripping, or his family and faction hating you for killing him should balance this.

    A couple of suggestions to make this mod even more of a masterpiece:

    1. It would be great if damage_interrupt_attack_threshold would be equal to say 3*Your_Ironflesh_Skill. Could be great for berserkers. For now it can only be edited with a static value in module.ini.
    2. Cutting damage above 10 hp could cause open wounds, adding timed bloodloss damage. Say, up to 10% of damage the armor was not able to adsorb every minute (adding a sound of being wounded). It may be adsorbed by ironflesh skill too.
    3. It would be great if wounds could slow people and horses. I really doubt a person could be of same effectiveness being at 1 hp. 0,5% per each 1% of health lost seems real, meaning you are ~49% slower when at 1hp.
    4. Armor may become damaged as it gets bumped heavily. If you get a 100 damage hit at a plate, it can get cracked, or battered when received 20-30 severe hits. An engineer skill may help to avoid it. A smith somewhere in the city could fix it for a price.

    There are tons of additional realistic features this game could get becoming even better. Everyone, who wants a certain feature added, lets share our thoughts!

    1 They supposedly settle who's right and wrong.
    2 They are given to friendly ladies and lords, equiping them with top notch gear and boosting relations.
    3 I think this is buggy or meant to allow for leaving a helmet off.
    4 I think that's a common problem with adding camps etc.

    3. I encountered it in a female partial plate armor only. Male plates have +7 bonus tops. Although it's not a problem to use any armor for any character (although I really think it should be: male or female; and SIZE, DEPENDING ON STRENGTH, like S[STR 1-7], M[STR 8-14], L[STR 15-21], XL[STR 21-28], XXL[STR 29-35], XXL[more than 36 STR]) Rocha, can you do that?
    4. It's not a problem at all. Just will be neat if hidden from the list.

    First of all great thanks to the modder for his work. It's awesome, really.
    Looks like the explicit content is working as an advert to the mod that needs no adverts because of contents.  :grin:

    Although I do not see fit the huge bolts of naked man (are they using tons of viagra, or just very happy to see me? Gee, I'm a guy, traditionally oriented), this does not really hurt my feelings. Just a suggestion — leave standing bolts for barbarians only. At least it makes sense...

    Ok, now for the playing experience:

    — I've encountered midnight assault of bandits in a city with a gypsy attacking me too. Oh, my? What have I done to her? Were my 500 not enough for her tarot card?

    — Attacking cloisters, churches and so forth I get tiresome searching for archers on the background walls. Aren't they supposed to protect the entrance during the attack?.. And three mounted black knights were standing their backs to me above the wooden stairs. When one of them got two arrow headshots from me, they understood they need to fight and mounted down from the stairs really fast. Very funny, although doubtfully realistic.

    — Saving witches from burning thrise a week is a little bit confusing. I get tired of shotting the entire village in the head every single day. Give me an option to burn it to the ground!

    I have a couple of questions, though:

    — Duels between team members make some difference to their relationship, morale, or it's just for fun?
    — What medals of honor are needed for? Selling?
    — Why certain armor sets give so significan head protection. +40 seems too much to me.
    — List of location contains camps located in a certain village. Can't you hide them from the list?
