  1. Tips on keeping captured castles/towns?

    wolfva 说:
Why not garrison the keep yourself, then give it to a lord?  Sure, it may be expensive, but then again...do a quick pass of the nearby towns for recruits and sit in the keep for a few days training them.  Garrison all your experienced troops so the recruits get more exp.  Switch 'em out, give the keep to a lord, then go capture a new one.

Oh I didn't know it's possible to give a keep to a lord. I guess I'll have to try that.
Also didn't know the recruits get more EXP when there's less troops in the group. Thought every unit gets the same amount of EXP each day, no matter how many units I have in my group. Guess that was a wrong assumption I made

Thanks for your help but I guess I'll leave it as it is for the moment. Don't really want to mess up my savegame with modding yet
  3. Any tips on being marshall?

Thanks for your lengthy post, it has given me some valuable insights!

I'm not clear if you're experiencing mass desertions or just lords running off "temporarily" (for apparently long periods of time) after any hostile that enters their aggro radius...

    Effud 说:
They'll follow you anywhere (they'll still run off periodically after anything that aggroes them)...

What sort of "desertions" I experience? Well, I experience both. But I can deal with them running off temporarily, although it's very annoying.
What is more of a hassle, is when they just leave for good: It says "following Zerged" and some moments later their tooltip changes to "travelling to ..." or something along those lines.
Will this only happen with lords that don't like me enough? And if they like me enough, they will, as you wrote it, "follow me anywhere", only running off temporarily and not until I go tell them to follow me again?

Thanks for the link but I guess the "lords liking me more because of high honor" seems to only be true in Warband, and I'm currently playing original M&B so I guess it doesn't really help me then with this issue.

They'll vote for you to remain as the Marshall of the Realm when elections come, they'll vote for you to recieve more fiefs when you captured them from the enemy, etc.; yes and yes.

Does the first yes mean they'll stay longer with me when I order them to follow? That would be awesome, because that's the main problem I have atm. I'm not 100% sure what the yes's are referring to so I just want to make sure

Some lords simply don't like following the marshall and won't do so unless you specifically go up to them and tell them to.

Others have more important things to do....  simply that.

    Others don't like you.

Tip #1:  Given the chance get to lords that are not following you and tell them to do so.

Tip #2: Get lords to like you.  Help them in fights, especially when they're on the verge of losing or damn well will lose by huge differences in odds raises their view of you a lot.  Also, a high honor makes at least half the lords in the realm like you a whole lot.

I'm already doing tip #1 all the time. Otherwise my group would probably be very very small.
But I have to tell them to follow me over and over again because when I siege a castle/town, a lot of them just leave while I'm building ladders/siege tower, or they leave during travel, which is quite annoying.

About tip #2: What do you consider high honor? And what exactly is the difference regarding the lords behaviour when I have good reputation with them? Will they stay with me longer? Or is it just more likely they join my campaign/follow my orders?
  6. Any tips on being marshall?

I'm currently the Marshall of my faction. I'd like to use this opportunity to conquer some towns and castles from my enemies. The problem is the lords that should follow me just leave if they feel like it. Also when I start a campaign almost noone seems to come and join me. Like this it can be...
  7. Tips on keeping captured castles/towns?

Ok thanks. Will consider this. I don't want all the castles, towns though. Takes me quite some time to accumulate a garrison as well.

Thanks for all the answers. Helped me out quite a bit.

    Do not look here 说:
In Warband you can assign units to different group manually, so most people at least have a different group for companions that are valuable and should stay out of battle. To be honest, I think I liked old system better, cause in Warband cavalry is cavalry whether they still have a horse or not - I believe best system would be mix of both.

About your companions rushing despite you order to follow - it's a vanilla M&B (but Warband have kind of it as well) thing that soldiers have certain inertia when following orders and it may take them a second or five to listen to you - best seen with Khergits, as they have fast horses. When their lords order their men to follow and do their "slowly ride around" tactic, some of them can ride through half of the map before going back to their ranks.
Also, don't keep your cavalry on follow, they act like sissies in fight when they're following. Make them charge before clashing with enemy and then break on your own and order them to follow - and it's normal that some of them will get swarmed with infantry, give infantry a chance to fight, eh? Your companions are crappy, bear with it. They're not knights and if they get swarmed, they have next to no chances with breaking on their own. Later in game my Matheld was eating above 200 denars a week and only couched lance up her butt was able to stop her, so they're definitely worth the initial pain

thanks, great answer! My companions are getting better now and they don't get knocked out so much anymore.
  10. Tips on keeping captured castles/towns?

Hey everyone I'm on my quest of conquering all Calradia for my king Harlaus. It's all going great so far but one thing is bothering me: Whenever I capture a town/castle and it's given to some other lord, it soon gets conquered by the enemy again because of the low amount of troops in it. Does...
  11. Some party skill questions

(...) it seems my companions sometimes charge in alone even though I have cavalry on follow (and since they're on a horse they count as cavalry, don't they?).
That shouldn't be happening. If you mount a companion on a horse, the game should recognize him/her as cavalry, and thus keep him/her wit the rest of such type of troops. The same with foot soldiers, as I can recall.
Well it doesn't happen often but lately just after the battle started everyone rushed off and I maybe waited 1 or 2 seconds and then did command everyone to follow me or so and one of my companions still seemed to rush off into the enemy  Maybe it was because he was already in a state of attack or sth.

And when I charge the enemy with my whole cavalry they let themselves surround so easily. They don't do the hit and run tactics I want them to do, lol. They sit on their horse and fight vs 10 heavily armored infantry. No wonder they get knocked out.
Don't spect miracles from the AI
If you want to do some hit&run tactics, order your men to follow you and lead the attack yourself. Or order them via the backspace HUD.
Well that's what I do. I put them on follow me and rush through the enemy but they often seem to stop when they reach the enemy. This sometimes also happens to knights but it seems that it happens to companions more often. Maybe I'm wrong and just notice it more when a companion stays back.

Btw. how can I have my companions in one of the map borders? Because afaik they get put into one of the troop categories and I normally use all of them. Or can you command your companions separately? Just for your information: I'm playing the original M&B atm. So it might be different in Warband.
That's the odd thing. I am no expert in such things, but it might be a bug? A glitch? I know not, sorry.
I just saw a video of Warband and I think there is a seperate group for companions which you can command, so I guess it's possible there.
  12. Some party skill questions

I have 4 companions at the moment. Yimira as a medic, Marnid as a trader, Artimenner as  an engineer + tactics guy and Borcha as a pathfinder + tracker + spotter.
I guess I want Yimira and Borcha up the most. For the other ones it's not THAT bad when they get knocked out. Depending on the situation it's better to have Artimenner up as well.

I didn't know they also level when they're not in battle. Best would then probably be to put them on the bottom of the list it seems. But won't they level at a much slower pace this way? And it won't work all the time because I can't have 200 troops in my army yet so they will be in the battle sometimes anyway (how do you keep up morale with 200 troops, I'm having trouble with 100 already while carrying many sorts of food, 7 leadership points etc. When I need to ride somewhere far away or repeatedly need to retreat from a castle/town attack morale sinks very fast).

Concerning commanding my troops: I normally have my archers and infantry hold position in a good spot and then have the cavalry follow me, flank the enemy forces and charge through them as they approach my stationary forces but it seems my companions sometimes charge in alone even though I have cavalry on follow (and since they're on a horse they count as cavalry, don't they?). And when I charge the enemy with my whole cavalry they let themselves surround so easily. They don't do the hit and run tactics I want them to do, lol. They sit on their horse and fight vs 10 heavily armored infantry. No wonder they get knocked out.

    Thanks for your answer btw
  13. Some party skill questions

Hello everyone M&B noob here :) I have some questions regarding the party skills. Let's say I have a companion with party skill surgery, now he's in the battle with me and my troops. Normally this would give my troops a chance to not die when being struck mortally. But if this companion gets...
