  1. Is it possible to join sieges against large cities

I get the impression you also get more renown for certain battle conditions. Fighting at night got me 1 more renown vs. some bandits (2 instead of the 1 I got during daytime.) Mountainous terrain seems to do the same, maybe fighting in difficult circumstances gets you more renown?

And yes helping faction members gets you renown way faster than killing bandits.
  2. Medieval Total War 2

Weren't the inquisitors "fixed" in CA's first proper patch (called Update 1)? I remember being annoyed at their random killing off of people when I was on best of terms with the papacy, just like SinisterMorality. Then I read the patch notes and it said that the inquisition had been made less aggressive. They haven't bothered me since i installed it, not even on very hard/very hard  :???:
  3. I can't get overhand spear right

Yeah I guess we're all right here. Of course there wasn't just one hoplite fighting style and type of armament throughout Greek history. They didn't even have standard equipment, since they were all citizens with custom made arms and armor.

I'm pretty sure the "shield wall style" was also used, though, since vases and frescos also often depict the straps that allowed the soldier to strap his shield to his left arm. This way he was able to wield the spear with both hands.
  4. I can't get overhand spear right

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought hoplites didn't use their spears overhand. The spears were way too long (almost 3 metres) and heavy to be wielded that way. It wouldn't have been practical as well because a hoplite battle was essentially a pushing match with the hoplites relying on their heavy armor. For close quartes they carried a short sword (the xiphos). This is what makes the picture completely retarded in my opinion, no way hoplites used their spears that way. Javelins maybe, but javelins were for the poor people (peltasts), not for the hoplites.

Sorry to rant like this, but I figured if you want to make a realistical hoplite, then why not leave the overhand thing out?

EDIT: Merlkir: firing volleys was EXACTLY what the Persians archers did. In fact, they did nothing else. Compare this:
Herodotus wrote that when Dienekes, a Spartan soldier, was informed that Persian arrows were so numerous that they blotted out the sun, he remarked with characteristically laconic prose, "So much the better, we shall fight in the shade." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae)
to the situation in the painting....
  5. A Review That Should Be Added To The Webpage

    8.75 now

HotU is indeed a great site. Too bad the guy needs so many ads to stay in business... they totally bog down his site.
  6. HELP ME!!

Can you post some more details? Like: does the game crash to desktop, is there an error message, does nothing happen at all?

Also there's a chance this is moved to support.
  7. i was wanting to know.....

  8. Screenshots? help plz

Boltscar, keep your men alive by:

    * Raising your tactics skill. This will give you numerical advantage in battle.
    * Telling your men to "hold" "follow" and "charge" at the right moments. If you start on a hill for example and have ranged troops (troops with bows, stones, whatever), tell them to hold and they will pepper oncoming enemies with missiles.
    * Infantry can swamp horsemen. Just let the cavalry come and order your men to charge at the last moment. The horses will be caught in the fray, rear up, get stuck and die.
    * Horsemen can easily kill off infantry on flat terrain. When faced with lots of enemy archers, however, lead your troops yourself, taking a route that offers cover. At close range, set the cavalry loose
    * Last but definitely not least: YOU are the hero! Charge in, kick ass and take names so your men don't have to! You are the biggest support they have, in fact

    Have fun!

Edit: also don't forget to feed your men!
  9. New version changes: report what you have found

Sorry if this has been posted (didn't want to read 10 pages), but it seems the game is more lenient to the player when reloading a crossbow.

In 0.632, you had to wait until the character had completely finished with the reload animation, including the loading of the bolt. With the new version, however, it seems you can already move around while the char. lays the bolt on the crossbow, without halting the reload. Thus, you can move sooner, for example to dodge enemies' missiles.
  10. the literacy thread

I'm a bookseller. I will not recommend any books, as the list would be endless

Okay I'll recommend one: "Vernon God Little," DBC Pierre.

Right now I'm planning to read Murakami's latest, "Kafka on the Shore"

  11. Combat Announcement Question

It also depends on the setting of the "battle size" slider in the options. Say it's set to twenty people max, and your 20-strong party engages another 20-strong party, there's 40 people ready to fight. But the game will only allow 20 people in for the start of the battle, so as soon as any side has suffered some casualties, "reinforcements" will arrive from the stack of people that weren't placed on the map at the start of the battle.

Which soldiers you start out with depends on the order they have in your party screen. The top brackets enter the battle first.

And yes, the game will talk about new enemies (opposing side) or reinforcements (your side) joining even if there are none

With the advent of v. 0.700, the people of Calradia became even more bloodthirsty  Lolz

Meanwhile my brave party of 7 is deliberating whether to join the excitement or not!

  14. Sauna

    Yes we have saunas.

    They are ace.

Although having a Finnish forest around your sauna definitely makes it better

Also most saunas in my city focus on gay men. Strange.
  15. Roman army, why was it so succesful?

Rome also had a strong central govermont. It would be an honor to see the emperor or a senator.

Not always though. Rome has fallen into civil war multiple times. At certain points in Rome's history, the generals were more powerful than the Senate. The allegiance of the legionaries was often to their general, not to the central government. And those generals turned their armies against Rome more than once.

Just trying to add some nuance, though, you're completely right. Their government certainly was strong if you compare it to other States of the age.
  16. how much is $12 USD worth in turkey?

Lol, it's a shame how much you Finns have to pay for alcohol. A sixpack of half decent lager costs like 4 Euros here.... But then again we're a major beer producer.

Also Turkey should just join the EU. Don't listen to all the scared and stupid people here in Western Europe, Turks! Ignore their idiotic comments and join us!
  17. Roman army, why was it so succesful?

I've got another reason for the Roman superiority: efficient administration. Unlike most European tribes at the time, the Romans were highly organized. This benefits the army as well. Standardized equipment, excellent communications (writing, roads!), a common language, a bureaucracy dedicated to maintaining and supplying the armies, etcetera.
  18. how many arrows does an archer or horsearcher carry

    On topic:

I'd say it must have been different for each situation. Archers occupying a fixed position might have baskets full of arrows, perhaps several thousands, at their disposal. However, being on the move while firing arrows is difficult with a large quiver. I'd say a moving archer, whether hunting or on a battlefield, would probably not carry more than 30 arrows or so.
  19. Stupid censorship

    Realsmasher:

Everybody heard you. Thanks to your mad skills, they now all know the horror that is Themida, according to you. Unfortunately for you, most of us JUST DON'T GIVE A DAMN 'CAUSE WE LIKE THE GAME!

It seems to me you have some personal issues with Themida, and that's just fine. Frankly though, I think most people here could care less.

So: it's not that you're not being heard, the problem is your message is boring.

PS: I have almost exactly the same comp as you, and M&B runs like a dream, as do all other games and apps. Maybe you should run a spyware/virus scan on your own bogged down system before accusing others? [/irony]
  20. V.S.O.P

Actually VSOP is not a drink, it's an indication of the quality and age of the drink, usually cognac. It means Very Superior Old Pale.

And yeah, they're usually good

Also tea is the best drink ever.
