  1. Seeking a Warband guide to combat, for a Native Mount and Blade player

I am looking for a Guide to combat in warband that specificly addresses the bad habits one might have coming over from mount and blade native. I've seen all the generic combat guides and they don't seem to help. first let me apologize, my browser and settings conflict with this site(i'm...
  2. how do you deal with archers?

you have to be careful with the shows on discovery/history channel. their experts often lack expertise or atleast common sense. Their expirements are often horribly faulty. Hell i watched one where they refered to the idiots who made midieval:total war as experts when they were trying to determine the most effective weapon.

Nothing that is widely held is without reason, albeit occasionally its not neccessarily good reason. still, if i ever find myself in the middle ages, i don't care how much armour i have on, i'm gonna pee my cod piece when the long bowmen come out to play.
  3. Can the recruits from any kingdom end up as infantry, archer or horseman?

    no.

nords do not get cavalry, nor do rhodoks. kerghits don't really get infantry(some tribesman start on foot, but at the next tier they are mounted.)

you can go here to look up the troop trees for the different factions, i believe its accurate and up to date.

  4. How to increase the prosperity of our villages?

doing quests, purchasing improvements, gaurding the villagers as they travel to town and back, and checking in regularly to make sure they aren't beset by bandits, as well as keeping enemy lords from raiding them are all ways to improve or maintain prsoperity, allegedly purchasing goods from them also improves their value, but i can't confirm this

unfortunately, they are all ultimately pointless. its far too easy to for a villages economy to tank, to the point of being a certainty. even if you pursue it to the exclusion of the rest of the game its likely your village will still decline in value or at best, not increase in value. its a lost cause, and not worth the effort. a prosperous village really doesn't grant much over a poor one, not to be worth the investment in time and money.

I would strongly advise against even trying, sure do the quests and purchase the improvements, but not to make them more prosperous, instead to increase relations for recruiting soldiers, to gain experience, or because the improvement provides a needed benefit.

you may notice NPC towns doing quite well and gaining propserity, unfortunately its because they don't play by anything close to the same rules as you. so you can't use them as an example. where the player is concerned, its not an aspect of the game that was ever completed.

as for the mill, i strongly recommend magelords list of 82 tweaks, one of which changes the mill to add 5 percent every month, instead of only once. but yeah, 5 percent of very poor isn't likely to change the welfare of the village.

  5. "distance 10 points 12"... what? message during siege-solved

ahhh, okay, thank you. haven't done archery practice since the tutorial way back when, so that didn't even occur to me, and yes, and there is a long row of archery targets, although i wasn't shooting them, still, that makes sense. thank you very much, that was driving me nuts.
  6. "distance 10 points 12"... what? message during siege-solved

i feel like an idiot for asking this, i don't even have the complete message, but its bugging me. i was sieging ibdles castle(i know i spelled that wrong, the rhodok castle just above yalen, between it and jeluka.) as i charged forward into the fray watching the list of casualties scroll by, i...
  7. how do you deal with archers?

i am certain that i still get damaged when the arrow hits the shield behind me. i play with normal damage. the shield only reduces the damage. as for my shield skill, it's at 10. i don't see any improvements in terms of coverage against range, only against melee. for some reason i think the arrows are doing more damage than melee, because of piercing and lack of speed penalty maybe? it would be nice if there was a bigger shield, one that would cover your legs too.

all i can say, charging up the siege ramp against an army of rhodok sharpshooters, that boost to my shield either helped substantially or the random number generator just went from one extreme to the other, cause i went from not being able to make it accross the ramp, to not taking a single hit. it definitely could have been luck, but it *seems* to me to help in every situation i have paid attention to, the siege ramp being the most extreme.

as to the "hit shield on back". my apologies. i've never seen damage, but i usually am on a very fast horse, so any hit to the back i am guessing still suffers the speed penalty(i'm riding away) and must have been severely reduced in damage. i've never read hit on back and seen my character flinch from pain atleast.

  8. how do you deal with archers?

    elohel 说:
how do you guys deal with archers? i have a character specialized in melee. i can take down hundreds of melee troops easily, but when it comes down to archers i get owned by like 30. they don't need to be top tier archers. i pull out my board shield when fighting them and try to move left and right when they begin to shoot. it helps, but for reason, they still managed to hit me in the legs with incredible accuracy. i also tried jumping but they still get my legs in the air . so i tried getting another board shield strapped on my back. sometimes i get the message "hit shield on back" and i look at my hp, 1/5 of my hp gone from that hit . that's like how much a sea raider would do to me on a direct hit.

on a side note, are arrows able to penetrate plate armor from the other side of the battlefield? doesn't the arrow get slowed down? and are archers that accurate back then too?

you aren't trying to solo them are you? i mean 'bob and weave' and similar tactics begin to fail, especially on foot(if you are using a board shield) against around 5-6, simply because they won't be firing at the same time so you can't get a rythem going. you can try going with a lighter armour to get your speed up, which will make your dodging a little more effective, but means you can take less hits. also invest in shields if you haven't as it improves the coverage and stops some of those foot shots. But you are basically charging a firing squad. if you are their only target, its going to be ugly.

find cover, like a ridge, and let them come to you. try to keep obsticals between you(like the archer you are currently killing), trees sometimes provide protection(sometimes it passes right through, and rocks have never blocked anything for me) try to engage them all, so they switch to melee, but be careful not to get swarmed, and know the minute you back off, they will switch back to ranged, but atleast the cycling of weapons will by you some time.

lastly, you can stand at a severe distance,(to mess up their aim) and exhaust their ammo. But that takes forever.

a 'hit shield on back' shouldn't do any damage, atleast it never does for me. against 30 archers, someone else is hitting you at the same time, probably the feet or the unprotected sides. the problem is one hit and you stumble/stop moving, then the volley that was flying at you slams into you. it usually happens so quickly and chaoticly that, to me, it appears as one hit, so maybe for you too.

as near as i can tell there is no drop in damage over distance, but i will leave it to someone more knowledgeable to confirm.

    hope you find that helpful.
  9. How do you arm your Companions?

few people are answering because its a question that has been asked over and over again, and its mostly a matter of oppinion.

    my oppinion

you companions aren't smart enough to bob and weave or use any other tactics, so when fighting against opponents with missile weapons, shields are a must. A second for their back is a good idea if you can manage it, but if they can use a missile weapon, you might as well let them, which means some will have to forgo the extra shield for a bow and arrow.

the key to leveling them is getting them to kill, since they are initially pathetic, speed seems more important than damage in a weapon. they will hit more, thus swinging even faster, and it will increase the chance of them hitting before their attacker does. i usually go for a balanced scimitar, although i sometimes use the balanced military pick whem i find myself fighting more heavily armoured opponents.

once you get them up in level, say 15-18, and you find yourself fighting more sieges, you might consider switching to a two handed long reaching damage dealer,  but be prepaired to watch them fall against missile heavy troops like kerghits and vaegirs(just like anyone else without a shield).if you save some of their weapon skill points it will make the transition easier(besides after a while the cost isn't worth it anyway)

get them the best armour you can for survivabilty, i usually go winged great helm, heraldic mail with tabbard, gauntlets, and iron greaves. it costs a fortune though. And remember, regular troops are either wounded or not, your companions have a damage percentage like you, best to keep them out of a fight when they fall too low, since they will just get knocked out before they can do anything anyway.

they can be very effective in combat, they can out perform top teir troops, but you have to invest properly, outfit expensively, and baby them a little more than you do your nameless grunts. but its definitely worth it, if only for the secondary benefits.

As far as i know, all languages that have a-z letters in them have capital letter, comma and dot. I understand that his English is not good, but he should at least put first letter capital (as he does in Swedish) and put dot at end of sentence.

it would be like this i speak english well but look how it is if i dont use comma dot or capital letter he should do that if we are to understand him thats all i have to say

when someone is posting in a foreign language their emphasis is on getting the words correct, not on where a comma goes. i read yours and his post just fine. furthermore, you can ask in a more polite manner, that someone put a little more effort into formating their sentences, but when they are struggling just to get the words out, i'll cut them some slack. At the very least i won't clutter up the boards with posts that do nothing but insult them, instead of addressing their problem.

    Helmut_AUT 说:
I don't know what causes this, but on two out of three searches, the board gives me results from more than the board I'm currently in. When I searched "ransom lords" I thus found topics about "Lords and Realms" and other mods.

Thanks for giving me the answer and the help, but you can believe me not finding stuff isn't always just a matter of being too stupid or lazy to search.

if you are using the search button on the upper left of the page, you are taken to a more advanced search, down at the bottom(past my screen so i don't see it normally) is a check box that says "check all" its right above the search button that most people don't use because simply pressing enter works just as well. right above this is some coloured text which reads "choose a board to search in, or choose all", unfortunately it looks like a link, not a search option, so most people will ignore it as irrelevant. also, if you are like me and have java script and other web features disabled for security, you can't use it anyway
and it defaults to search all

its easier to use the little embeded search feature on the upper right.

whats your native language? espanol? francias? in your profile you selected english, which is a bit confusing. possibly someone who is fluent can speak to you natively?

    Helmut_AUT 说:
I'm finding that now with a focus on grooming recruits, a single village raid, and some spoils of war, I'm making money.

However, it's awfully hard to train troops up to Cavalry, or is it just me? Trying to get Vageir Vets to Vagier Horsemen takes ages.

this is why i personally find it incredibly beneficial to have combat heavy companions. a combat heavy companion levels faster(xp from killing), and this then earns you more skill points to invest in their trainer skill, and with a higher level, gets applied to even high tier troops

in one game i was playing, i could raise an entire army of vaegir recruits to horsemen in 4 days just traveling around trading, no fighting neccessary(although, wheres the fun in that) i actually could train them to knights, but slowly, at that point, just unleashing them on the first unlucky opponent you find is infinitely easier and quicker.

Oh, and when your troops reach their penultimate rank, don't upgrade them immediately unless you have to fight an important battle right then and there, as it's fastest to upgrade them all in one go.
I find your statement interesting. What exactly makes you think they level up faster if you wait before upgrading them? I prefer to upgrade them as soon as possible and get them out of my party and in a garrison so they are no longer wasting food, money and stealing kills from ones that haven't reached max level yet.

Experience is gained for the type of troop, not the individual troop right, so having more of a type of troop in battle killing and gaining experience will mean the group overall gets more experience and levels faster. if you have 10 nord veterans and you upgrade 5, you will have half as many troops out there earning experience for your nord veterans. that has to translate into slower leveling of your veterans.
further if you loose a nord veteran, you can still upgrade 5, you don't loose any of the groups experience. i personally find it makes leveling alot easier and faster

hope i explained that well enough
  15. How do you stop "thumping"? (melee fighting)

I appreciate the advice and feed back.

A thought occured to me i thought id throw out there. One of the widely known tactics here to hit faster is to turn into the swing, i'm wondering if doing so isn't actually part of the problem, if i am not, by turning, narrowing the distance between my swing and the opponent, resulting in a stopped swing, while not neccessarily narrowing the distance my opponent swings... or, since no one else has felt annoyed enough to complain, that i am just not doing it badly. Its often hard to keep track of everything happening in hectic battles, so it hasn't occured to me sooner, has anyone else noticed this?

another thought, most people *seem* to be advising a right to left swing when giving people tips, i actually prefer a left to right swing(from the horse, a right to left gives more reach but leaves you significantly more exposed, but i find a left to right makes it easier to shoulder the horse into the opponent, and if anything is hit, it will usually be the animal) So, is it true most people swing right to left?  could this be part of the problem?

i have found aiming for the head causes less thumping to occur, but i find leaning back that far to be unnatural, counter to most mounted combat, and a little disorienting when fighting in sieges were footing can be very important, and were i do most of my fighting on foot. But i agree it helps.
  16. Trade higher than 5 ?

    Ravenheild 说:
Actually, beyond boosting my group stats I usually don't use companions unless I'm RPing.  The majority of combat is handled by my troops and the companions are too squishy for heavy fights.

i mean no offense, but i think you aren't leveling them/equiping them properly. i play average/average/normal and a companion can often be as, or more, effective than a nord huscarl in sieges. my guys down enemy lords by themselves, and on horseback they massacre my enemies. best of all, unlike the rest of my troops, no matter how many times these guys get the crap beaten out of them, they never die.
sure, one or two are largely combat ineffective(my medic, my tactician/engineer) but the rest are excellent.
  17. Trade higher than 5 ?

    CossackRider 说:
    Hi,

Marnid's trade is 5, and I already noticed that when I sell items captured on the battlefield, I get the full price.
So, do I need to raise the trade trait higher than 5?
Because if 5 is enough, then I can put the points into Marnid's agility and strength, or into trainer.

Does the trade points affect other things, like when you buy spice/velvet and sell at another city?  If not, then that would mean 5 is enough for the trade trait

if i may interject my 2 cents

raising trade on a companion is a bad idea in my oppinion. its tied to charisma, which governs trade, persuasion, and leadership. only one of those skills(trade) is one you can invest in to any effect with a party member in native(to my knowledge)
since you yourself will almost certainly need leadership(i find persuasion to be uttery useless  unless going caimant) if for no other reason than the discount to troop wages that leadership grants, you might as well be the trader in the bunch as well.
plus, those idiots always get knocked out right before a sale, and i forget until its too late and end up getting hosed anyway.

and personally, unless you are activey trading, the 3 you get from katrin and others is generally enough, better to have hardcore fighters who can take on larger groups resulting in more loot(and experience) than weaker guys who must fight smaller parties or fight with back up(cutting in on your share of the loot) that you then can sell for slightly more

especially since once you have decked these guys out with top gear, your only real purchasing expense is food.

edit: i'm a moron, its prisoner management, not persuasion, but it still stands that its not a skill your party members benefit from having points invested in.
  18. How do you stop "thumping"? (melee fighting)

I have been playing mount and blade for some time, though i took a long break. on average/average/normal I do really well on horse back, but only fairly well on foot. i've actually asked this before in a larger grouping of questions way back when, but no one addressed this one point, and right...

This final fight depends a lot on your two "partners". If you have melee strong companions or Nord Huscarls you don't need to do that much yourself, throwing weapons do help.

I agree it depends on who you put up there. But my NPCs have had trouble before. Even my top level ones. If I just sit back and watch them go, they often lose and I have a few more to kill. It's worse in a city siege too where your top level soldiers have to face two waves.

well, there is always waiting till the baddies engage your comrades then running around to stab them in the back. don't need the best skills or equipment to fight cheap and dirty. works for me anyways. Or the reverse, shield up and be the punching bag. shields have no strength recquirement, just get your back to the wall and hope your allies kill them before they tear through your shield.

something else of interest, he doesn't come out at night, only during the day time. if you ask the elder he will tell you something to the effect of his usual crap "around here somewhere" but then add something like "but i doubt you will find him around at this hour"

pissed me off the first time i read that, everyone else in the town was out, but he wasn't, i searched, and searched before finally checking with elder.
