Good way to start a war :)

    Attar 说:
When a lord insult you and you duel him and defeat him, then you go to his castle and they say that the guards are ordered by the lord to not let you enter the castle or they will shoot you, that's the perfect moment to get a new castle!

I might have to try that.

But are there really no honourable ways to start a war? Besides provoking kings by turning their lords? (which doesn't always work btw....I'm still waiting for Ragnar to rebuild, and come at me again...it's been over a month...:meh:)

I wanted to declare war with an emissary, but my minister keeps warning against it for some odd reason. :meh:
...I'm beginning to suspect she may not be on my side after all...:shifty:

    Official Favorite Aesthetic Poll

 Swadians, because their lands are green and bountiful with cities and castles made of stone. Plus great location for an expanding empire. And I really dig the look of coat of plates and armoured chargers. (Especially paired with great winged helmets.) Red happens to be my second favourite colour too.

Is it possible for my husband to defect from my self started faction when queen?

Hopefully, JosieJ will make an appearance soon.  She knows all the answers about playing as a female.

 That would be great. I've read through lots of older topics by JosieJ about playing female characters, and it's good stuff.

Sorry for the late response (and thanks for the compliment)!  Unfortunately, I don't know all the answers about playing as a female: I don't know the answer to yours!   After my first pitiful attempt at beating the game with my own faction, I pretty much stuck to good-natured husbands because I had the same problems you're having with yours: steady relation drop.  Damn, that guy was a pain in the ass to manage!  I dumped that attempt before my husband defected, so I don't know if it's theoretically possible.

 Thanks Josie, and no worries. I learned a lot reading through the older threads. And PITA husband is right!!!  I’ve had to appease him with more fiefs than he deserves, that’s for sure. (Thankfully he’s a half decent marshall, so his army of 260+ isn’t wasted.) Suppose that’s what I get for marrying the lord with a town and castle. Now I wish I would picked either Surdun or Tellrog, both good natured guys with nice banners, and cute too. But sadly they only had villages back then, and the character I’m roleplaying is the ambitious sort, a female warrior who believes she’s destined to unite Calradia under one banner, (thanks in part to Lezalit whispering in her ear).

Going by how things work for other lords, I’m going to assume it is possible for him to defect if our relations get low enough, and as long as there’s another faction to jump too. Good thing my goal this game is too crush all opposition.

Next game I’m playing a lady turned mercenary, and only courting good natured men. Because lord personalities may be fixed from game to game, but castle owners not so much!!! thanks again.

Good way to start a war :)

Because I seem to be having trouble getting some action going these days. :? Emissaries I send out for recognition come back reporting the other rulers feel intimidated by me, and are not looking for hostilities, and while this makes me gleeful inside, it's not exactly exciting...

Does renown have a level cap?

    bjorntheconquerer 说:
    http://mountandblade.wikia.com/wiki/Renown

Renown will be earned by your character as you progress through the Mount&Blade games. Your character's renown is basically how well known they are throughout Calradia or Eastern Europe. The other lords and rulers also have renown, which over time, assuming you are relatively successful, you will surpass.

You can gain renown in a number of ways:

Winning battles - The more the odds are stacked against you, the more renown you will earn, up to a maximum of 50 per battle.
    Winning Tournaments.
    Completing Quests.
    Holding successful Feasts (Warband only).
As a female character, countering remarks from lords. However, depending on their personalities, you may lose relation and some will want to duel you, or even worse, send their army at you. Others will admire your quick tongue and you will gain relation.
You can also lose renown over time by not doing any or enough of the above.

Thanks! I did read that page, but still wasn't sure about a cap.

 I loved all the different comments when first meeting lords. Was threatened with everything from a flogging to having dogs sicced on me. It was pretty amusing.

Does renown have a level cap?

    Naikon 说:
As far as I know, there is no renown cap. But gaining renowns from battles become harder as you gain renown and become more powerful.
And if you sit idle for some time at high renown level than I think you lose some reknown. For example, if you don't fight for a week than your renown will reduce.

Ok, that makes sense, thank you. I just found it funny I kept losing large amounts of renown, like -9 at a time, but my faction has been at peace (unfortunately) for a few weeks now. And I swear I lost renown for winning the last tournament too. :meh: (I was entering them to help cull the rift raft and increase the odds one of my vassals would win.)

Perhaps a case of 'too famous for my own good' as hunting bandits earns me zip, and I can no longer sneak into hostile towns under siege.

    Making Money in Calradia

    ^ All great tips!

I only had a problem with money in the beginning, and mostly because I was trying to field/train too many troops. Once I realized my folly and started rolling with a smaller, elite group, the funds started coming in, and I was able to save up $ to invest in enterprises. That was a game changer for sure.

And I still prefer using a small, elite war band. Plus that way I can catch just about anyone on the world map, including Khergits!

Oh, and don't own too many fiefs at once. Tax inefficiency is a real bank account killer.

Does renown have a level cap?

I know renown is the players fame rating in Calradia, but I cannot seem to raise mine above 1800 no matter what I do...and it doesn't help that it falls really fast too. Just wondered if there is a soft cap? TIA :)

Yes, they all did...went from 70+ to -3 to -15 with Ragnar after our last war, and 100 devoted to me thanks to high honour.
There is definitely a sweet spot for converting lords.

I also convinced a cunning Rhodok lord to join my empire, bringing Ergellon, Grunwalder and Weyyah castle into the fold. Then I indicted him for treason, as it's only a matter of time before he betrays me too, (learned that lesson well!) and divvied out his former castles to my loyal devotees.

It's a tad powerful being so 'good'...  :shifty:

I wonder how a lord with 3 castles betray his own king? In my campaign the one with the most fiefs remain loyal to the king but this is weird.

I don't know exactly how it works, but from what I've experienced playing, having decent persuasion skill (5+), high honour/renown, and a whole lotta luck/good timing, goes a long way when persuading others. Maybe charmisa is a factor too? Mine is only 15 though, so not that high...also helps when they're already your friends from vassalhood days! And lord personalities matter a lot too. The cunning guy Reland only liked me 13, but Graveth even less, and our land bordered, so it seemed a win win move. Or so he thought. heh Probably wouldn't have been long before he was indicted anyway.... There are still lords that I can't turn, and maybe never will? Even though they are at 100 relations and say they like me better, they don't feel safe enough to join me yet, or can't betray their liege, blah, blah....so war it is. When the carrot quits working, time for the big stick!!!

I'm nearing day 600 in my game, and there are so many lords bouncing around the remaining factions right now, it's a constant mad house of indictments and defections.
These kings seriously need to tone it down...

Oh and i would be grateful if you do the same for Harlaus when you're done with the rhodoks  that man declared war on me because i took a castle that belonged to their enemies while i was helping them especially when they where about to fall and then we managed to reclaim their lands back  :meh: (Simply this is what you get when you're good to Harlaus lol.)

After a little 'chill time', King Graveth decided peace might be a better option than total annihilation, so I accepted, and our kingdoms are currently at peace.
    But not for long... :shifty:

Oh, and I would totally put Harlaus in Praven's dungeons if I could, but he left the realm quite some time ago.

    What's our favourite faction ?

    ^ I don't understand the numbers?  :?:

My favourite faction to align with are the Nords.  Ragnar is fair and honourable, and rewards his honourable vassals very well. (Not sure if this changes from game to game though?)

My favourite faction troops are Nord huscarls, Swadian knights, Rhodok sharpshooters, Khergit veteran horse archers, and Sarranid mamlukes.

Yes that's the weird part when they lose all their forces, fiefs and they are still wanna fight you.

Lords are all hard wired for warmongering, especially the Nords!!!

So I rode with my merry band of Knights to Jelkala and approached King Graveth about peace. He said no, I said fine, went to leave and promptly got jumped by the King and his posse of half whupped Rhodok lords resting hiding in his city. So I whupped them all again, (heh) and took their King as my prisoner.

    Lord relations and rivalries

    Cheezeninja 说:
The only way to operate with a ton of lords in your faction is to give castles and towns to good-natured and upstanding lords, and placating the others with the villages. Lords will join previous factions a second time if their relationship is better than theirs with yours, and if it is better than -50.

If the relations get bad enough, kick them before they take your land. I indict lords with castles if the relation gets below -30. If they don't have fiefs other than villages, never indict them because you have nothing to lose for it.

Good advice, thank you.  So I took the initiative and indicted both the snakey lords (both in the -30's) before they could betray me, and the fallout wasn't half as bad as I expected. Only lost -6 with my husband (he's pitiless, so will have to be managed carefully) and the same with the other cunning lords. Now I have a good, solid group of upstanding/good natured/martial vassals (all 100 devoted) and a handful of cunning ones with only villages who are grumbling...but I don't really care about them.

Things are fairly stable in the Calradic Empire atm. Feel's good.
