  1. Trouble finding things to fight

Ah!  I have that same problem daily.  I have a solution.  I fight whatever I can handle until my party morale is excellent.  Then I sleep in a nearby town or castle until early morning.  There should be new bad guys out there to fight if you can find them.  Keep in mind that lords fight bad guys too so when lords are plentiful, bad guys become rare.
  2. Bow or Crossbow?

    macethump 说:
Don't have the extra points laying around to invest in strength and power draw and horse archery.  I've got better things to do with those points, so it's crossbow for me.  Masterwork heavy crossbow, large bags of steel bolts, only at sieges.  Then it's mostly one-shot kills.  And shield sissies don't survive either.  After a little experimentation, they get a headshot over the shield.  I hide behind and line of hired blades and pick of those foolish enough to stand on the wall until I run out of bolts.  Rinse, repeat.

Thank you!  That's the point that I was trying to make earlier!

Granted, a bow "might" (I've never tested it) hit harder with power draw at 10 and strength at 30 but then that's 10 skill points that can't go into training, surgery, first aid, ironflesh, and so forth.  I can't afford to put my power points into power draw because in a siege I will need to go into melee mode when my ammo runs out anyway.  That's why power strike is higher priority for me.  Melee weapon swings are unlimited, ammo is not.

My advice still stands.  Go with the masterwork siege crossbow and a large bag of steel bolts.  Dismount when you want to use it.
  3. well that does it

I feel the same way sometimes.

I cheat too, and only because it takes too long to earn money to buy top gear and too long to get anywhere.  I can't stand it when enemies run away and I can't catch them or it takes so long to catch them that my party morale drops and I lose troops along the way.  It also sucks when I'm being chased by enemies who will easily beat me to a pulp and I can't outrun them.  I would've left the game already had I not cheated.

Once I eliminate all enemy kingdoms, I will be tired of this game and will not return to it for a year or more.  But it has already given me enough pleasure for the price that I paid for it.
  4. Bow or Crossbow?

    Lotus Dragon 说:
Which weapon do you guys prefer?  Im kind of caught between the two and dont know which to use as my ranged weapon.

I know the crossbow has higher damage and is more accurate on horseback, but it takes longer to reload.  Im not sure about the range.
The bow has less damage than the crossbow, isnt very accurate on horseback, and has a fast reload.  Again, im not sure about the range.

I like riding on horseback because it seems to give me a big advantage against my opponents, so whatever weapon I choose, it will have to work well on horseback.
From a real life perspective, I prefer bows so I would feel more comfortable shooting one both in game and in real life.  Should I go with the bow or the crossbow?

Seriously, for me the obvious choice is the crossbow.

For starters, in a siege you and your troops will be on foot so a masterwork siege crossbow is devastating with a large bag of iron bolts.  Once you are within melee range of your enemies in a siege, you will be forced to abandon your bow or crossbow and switch to a melee weapon as will your troops.  It's nice to have points in power strike and proficiency for that weapon in such a situation.  As far as I'm concerned, power strike is far more important than power draw or power throw.  I put many points in more important skills so I can't afford to put any points in anything but power strike.  Crossbows don't require power draw or power throw, only sufficient strength which is what a melee warrior would have naturally.

As for shooting from horseback, the masterwork light crossbow is the way to go.  The larger crossbows cannot be used on horseback but all you need to do is dismount to use them, which I do while behind my troops.  I like having a light crossbow and shooting behind my horse when the enemy is very close so that I rarely miss.  I don't bother putting any points in horse archery.  It is always at zero for me.

But if you enjoy bows, carry a hunting bow in addition to your crossbows and have yourself some fun when you want to!  That's what gaming is about.
  5. A nice tactic to become rebel without effort

I've never tried that.  Are you saying that if you undo your oath that your -50 relationship doesn't return to 0?

    Another question:

When I got Tihr I did not get any of the associated villages, they were each given to different lords who did not have any fiefs. Is this normal ?

Hmm, I have the opposite problem.  I've sieged over a dozen castles and towns solo and did not ask for any of them.  All I have is my original fief.  Every so often my king sends a messenger to ask me if I would accept various properties as a reward for my loyal service.  I eventually gave in and accepted a castle where I can store my excess recruits.  But I still get offers for more properties and I refuse them.
  7. Love the game, a few questions

    Aesirgard 说:
First...  Awesome game, wonderful community.  Got the game, and played all weekend... addicted.

Been playing long enough to siege a few castles, and got my own Castle+Village.
I want to start a new character now that I have a basic running knowledge.
Got a few questions.... actually just looking for opinions/strategies.

1.) How many Heroes do you usually keep in your army?  In the beginning they seem very weak, die often, and take forever to get back up to full health.  The extra Party Skill bonuses are very nice... and I would assume they get much stronger and worthwhile later on.    My current game, I am using:

    Rolf
    Nizar
    Matheld
    Baheshtur
    Artimennar

They don't seem to have a problem with me razing villages...  which is where I get most of my income.
    What team do you use?

2.) What is your mounted weapon of choice?  (Besides the Spear Line)
I just can't seem to get off of two-handed axes.
Swords seem to do that forward thrusting action too much, and I have a hard time hitting people with it...  whereas the axes just swing left or right.    Also, it says Axes have a bonus to shields.... but does anyone know what this bonus is?  Is it worthwhile, or should I consider using a Bardiche or Scythe for extra range?

    Thanks... sorry for being longwinded.

I've started many new characters for the same reason so I understand your reasons.  I use 8 compatible heroes.  Heroes are weak at first but like your avatar they don't die so they can eventually get very high in level.  Heroes only heal slowly if the party heal skill is low.  Keep in mind that party skills are unavailable when the health of heroes who have them are in the red.  It's Ymira who complains about raiding villages, if I remember correctly.  But I no longer raid villages now that I know that everything will eventually belong to my faction.  My income is from prisoners and loot sales in the early game.

My army is 100% cavalry and my weapons of choice for my avatar are the great axe, jousting lance, and siege crossbow.  I use the lance when I need prisoners or to dismount enemy cavalry for my troops.  The axe is for close combat on horse or on foot, and the crossbow is for sieges or when I feel like dismounting to raise my crossbow proficiency.  For my heroes I set them up the same way except that I substitute a warhammer for the lance.

What the axe does to a shield is break it if you hit the shield hard enough, or enough times.  When successful you will hear the sound of a wooden board splitting into pieces.  No more shield and no more protection for that unit!  They're an easier kill after that.
  8. THE #1 biggest problem with M&B....

I agree with the OP up to a point.  The game starts easy and becomes harder, not the other way around.  To prove it, play solo and stay solo for as long as you can.  When enemy troops grow beyond 40, let me know how easy it is then!

However, the lack of good documentation, not counting this forum, makes it tough at the very start when you don't know anything about the game.  Much of the learning curve is through trial and error.  It takes time to learn which enemies are tougher, where best to put skill and attribute points, which heroes are compatible, what tactics work best against each enemy type, how to herd cattle, that beef rots, that prisoners can be a great source of income in the early game, that horses in inventory help boost map travel speed but you can't carry cattle in inventory, and so many other important details.  Once you've played the game long enough, like a few months, you eventually learn what to do and the game becomes easier in that sense.  I can't tell you how many times I've started a new avatar because I realized how important or unimportant certain skills and attributes are for my style of play and what I've encountered in the game.

If the OP means harder because enemies tend to run away more as your troop size grows then I can understand that.  But the undocumented way around that problem is with heroes and elite troops.  Keep the minimum needed and keep them fully trained and equipped to the max.  Then enemy groups will think that you're easy prey and will follow you.  A small troop size has an additional advantage of increased map speed to get away from the very large groups more easily.
  9. Poll: Do you use mercenary units in Native?

I don't bother with the male mercenaries.  If you could have female mercenaries who eventually upgrade to sword sisters then I'd hire them all.  They rock!
  10. Does anyone else wonder why.....?

I wish there was a hotkey or shortcut key for that.  All of my heroes have training skill at 5.  When midnight comes around my entire army of recruits suddenly upgrades all at once!  Very cool but also a big pain in the neck to click once per soldier.  I feel your pain.
  11. the best cheat in the world!!!!!!

Thanks for that cheat.  It will save me time in those long battles.  It will make me as powerful as a wizard.

I cheat and am middle-aged.  After spending real life months playing and starting over more than a dozen times to try different skill point distributions, I find cheating to be a sanity saver.  I'd stop playing if not for the cheats.  I only use a few of them, namely the map travel cheat, the spotting cheat, the money and experience cheat, and the weapon proficiency cheat.  Those cheats save me time in getting my troops back up to snuff so that I can continue where I left off in the previous game that didn't seem to be going so well because I put points into the wrong places.
  12. Need some help moving on from bandits

Here's my best and time-tested advice for the early game:

    1. Raise your own level first.

    2. Equip yourself often with the best gear that you can find or afford.

    3. Hire eight compatible heroes.

    4. Sleep daily after your party morale reaches excellent.

    5. Forget about recruiting anyone else.

    6. Do not attack farmers, caravans, or siege castles, towns, or raid villages.

I start solo by fighting looter groups until I get to level 5 or 6 or bored.  I equip my avatar with loot and sell the rest.  After every battle I compare my equipment with the loot and upgrade when possible.  I also go to towns often to buy upgrades and replenish food as needed.

Then I travel to the various towns cautiously to find heroes in taverns.  Like you, kings, and lords, they never die.  I'm not talking about the mercenaries like caravan guards and the like but rather the ones with names like Alayen, Ymira, Borcha, and such.  Your losses will only be wounds which means that they will be alive to fight another day and increase in levels eventually.

I avoid recruiting prisoners, villagers, or anyone who isn't a hero early in the game.  The reason is that big armies scare away the smaller groups.  Unless your map speed is sufficient to catch them, you'll find yourself chasing enemies for days and that lowers morale, consumes food, and costs wages during the chase.  Someone in the party needs high path-finding (increased map speed) and one needs high spotting (to see distant enemies).  The same hero can have both but that leaves fewer points for other skills.

Once I have morale up to excellent, it's time to sleep and allow more bandit and deserter parties to spawn.  I check my food supply before sleeping.

Until I become a vassal for a king or decide to become a rebel, I do not attack farmers or caravans.  The same applies to sieging castles and towns.  I don't raid villages anymore but used to.  I've learned that any village could become mine someday and they will never forget what I did to them.

Once my troops and myself are sufficiently high in level then I will recruit from villages.  I may also do so if the enemy groups are much bigger than my troops can handle.

If you hire from your prisoner pool, do it early in the day and do your best to fight often and raise them one level so that they don't run away during the night.  Only non-upgraded prisoners run away, at least in my experience.
  13. Another archery question...arent you tire of these

To answer the OP's main question, it is worth putting points into power draw but only up to 4 points above that required by your favorite bow.  Anything above that is wasting points.  So if your favorite bow has a power draw requirement of 6 then adding 10 to power draw will be good.  If only 5 then go only up to 9, and so forth.

However, I prefer to go with crossbows and two-handed weapons.  That allows me to leave power draw, horse archery, and shield at zero and gives me more points to put into fewer skills.  This works very well for me.
  14. Getting a castle

I had been refusing offers of vassalage for quite some time and spent most of my time searching for lords who were in battle with bandits of any kind and helping them.  I had a yearning to try an army of sword sisters so I had to pick on the farmers of a kingdom that I was unlikely going to join and that was the Rhodoks (cyan kingdom).  After collecting enough peasant women (50 of them) and being chased by every Rhodock lord in my vicinity, I paid money to make peace with them.  Eventually I accepted vassalage for the king of Swadia for no particular reason since my forces consist of sword sisters and heroes.  From that point onward I spent most of my time searching for enemy caravans, farmers, and lords.  In this case the green and cyan kingdoms were my enemies.  I always allowed defeated lords to go without being captured and that gave me honor/honour (both spellings are in the game).  I'd also join in sieges and battles of friendly lords.

After weeks of my king not trying to siege any castles or towns, while other kingdoms were, I decided to go out on my own to try it.  Wow!  In easy mode it was easy to siege castles.  I sieged three castles in a row and chose the option to ask for it each time.  I was granted all three!  Cool!  So now I get cocky and think that I can siege a town and own it along with my three castles.  Nope!  I won the siege but the king gave it to another lord and gave me 900 denars instead.  Reloading the saved game before the king replied always came up negative but the banner changed each time.

I've never monitored any of my ratings/relations/whatnot before erasing the saved game so I can't tell you if anything had an effect on the king's decision to grant three castles in a row to me.  But I would assume that it works much like other stats do.  If you have enough points in something then you have a chance to be granted a castle.  Asking for more than that will always end in a negative answer from the king.  If you have enough for two then you can own up to two.  The same for three and above.  Which stat or stats affects this, I don't know.  It's just my opinion.
  15. Khergit Rebel

You don't need to be at war with a faction to be attacked by them.  My rebel army is composed of heroes and sword sisters.  I'm at peace with all kingdoms at the moment.  But when I attacked one Rhodok farmer group to capture their 3 peasant women, I had to sneak into Rhodok towns and often had to fight my way in from then on.  Rhodok lords would follow me on the map but couldn't catch me.  All I had to do to get back on their good side was to talk to a lord in any Rhodok castle and pay a fee for peace.  Had I fought any of the Rhodok lords and won then I'd have been known as a Rhodok Rebel.  I think this is what happened to you.
  16. Arrow Tragectorys

My idea is similar and probably easier to use and to implement.

When I put my reticule on a target, regardless of distance, the graphics of my avatar should show him/her aiming upwards as necessary to hit that target.  It won't guarantee a hit because the target will probably move and my skill might not be high enough to be that accurate.

This should be an option that you can toggle.  Some people enjoy guessing where to aim since it's more realistic.
  17. Buying, selling, trading and giving away troops

I have a very similar idea as the OP.  I'd like the option to buy, sell, or give for free, prisoners and troops with anyone, not only with lords.

Many times I come across manhunters with prisoners I want or I have rescued manhunters that I want to return to their brothers.  I might sell or give faction troops to other lords to increase their armies.

Rather than have bandits and deserters run from me, they should approach me with a desire to trade troops or prisoners.  If their troop sizes are larger than mine and would normally attack me then let them attack me as usual or give me the option to attack, surrender, pay what they want, or trade troops or prisoners with me.

As it is now I can rescue and capture but releasing them makes them disappear from the world.  I don't like that.
  18. Couched Lances etc. Old grumble.

Couching is fine as it is so I vote to leave it alone.

I use it in the beginning as a quick way to go up in levels before building my army.  Once I have 30 or more troops then I sit it out and let them do all the killing.  If I try to go out and couch anything with an army that large on my side, they end up getting in my way too often and ruin my couch attempts.  Rather than yelling at my computer, I just relax and command my troops from a stationary position.

It's possible to kill only the horse if you give it a lance enema from behind and moving at the same speed as that horse.  That leaves the rider on foot for my troops to finish off.  Hitting them broadside sometimes hits both the horse and rider if your aim is low as does the enema if my speed is too fast.

You can't couch in a siege so I say leave it be.
  19. Radical change to the point system

I've searched and found nothing on this specifically.  I propose that the attribute and skill points system be changed so that they increase by doing things, as the weapons proficiencies do, rather than by assigning points to them at level-up time.  The amount of increase will generally be...
  20. So making war is not determined by chance?

I doubt that it's random.  One of my tasks as a vassal of Swadia was to incite a war with the Khergits by attacking their caravans until a war was declared.  Plus I think that the kingdoms enjoy being at war.
