I've just recently spent alot of time researching cards for something just like you described.

I settled with a 9800GT with 1GB ram for $140. I also put down another $50 for a 550W power supply though you can probably get one cheaper. I hadn't upgraded my computer for 4 years before I bought it, and I've been very happy so far

Here is a list of games which were previosly unplayable but now run with graphical 100% settings no problem

M&B with HDR and battle sizer at 300

Also Crysis Warhead on 'mainstream' settings averages ~45 fps outdoors.

Again not that I really have much experience with other cards (nor would I be proud to) but if you're looking to plug in and get straight into the games mentioned above I highly recomend it - and by the looks of things you can pickup a 512Mb version easily for $100 - $120 nowdays

Community spirit? What I observe is a whole lot of grandiose community plans and half-assed implementations that fizzle into nothing.

Fortunately, the people behind the quality mods seem to be able to see through it. Guys please keep it up -- I would happily pay $30 for a well oiled version of a few of the mods around at the moment.
