However, while I can accept foot combat being weaker than fighting mounted (as said before, it is Mount and Blade after all), it is a bit too inferior. Firstly because you have to have a character specifically designed for it and know what you're doing, where as you can ride around owning anything mounted without spending a single point on skills than enhance your combat abilities. Secondnly because foot characters are so worthless against mounted opponents. Sure, 1v1 its not a problem at all. But unlike when you're mounted, soloing a couple dozen dark knights isn't just alot harder, its entirely impossible without exploiting (i.e. climing a tall hill and forcing them to dismount).
You've got some good points there. It definitely takes a lot more skill points to make sure your foot soldier has the adequate skills to be effective on the battlefield. Usually, I bring athletics up to atleast 4. That's the main thing. Then you also want party skills, like pathfinding, leadership and most important of all; surgery. I use even more skills, so that's just a few.
It is true that foot soldiers are very useless against hordes of cavalry. Therefore, I made myself a small army of Vaegirs soldiers to assist me whilst I pwn my pathetic enemies. I carry a twohander and two packs of javelins; with a shield. I have rather light armor. It only weighs 10.0..and it's called light plate or something similar. This, plus my agility makes me rather agile on the battlefield. Being faster helps me a lot!
When fighting against horses, I am usually in the front lines. I let the enemy cavalry charge at my group and I pick two of those horses out for myself. As soon as they come riding towards me, I jump in the air and swing my sword of war and the rider's head. Usually their head armor is weaker than their body armor, so I kill them in one hit most of the time. After I have killed one, the other enemy cavalry has been stopped by my party's spears and other weapons. Then I charge into the fray and hack them to pieces.
If it's heavy cavalry, like dark knights etc., I position myself on a hill and cut them down as they try to hike upwards. Either that, or I make sure that I am standing close to trees, rocks, or other obstacles.
Personally, I think being a foot soldier is a lot more fun. It is more challenging, but I enjoy it better. Because I fight so much, my health almost never reaches halfpoint. That's why I fight with more skill..to make sure that I won't get beat down every time.
