    The Great PW ERP Debate

    Boarlady 说:
That is a tad much. Anyone whose Erps on video game because they are horny is...well there is just no word.
Why else would someone ERP? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm honestly asking a question. Maybe that just says that I'm immensely pervy, but I can't think of another reason to do it.

And Serann: the "disturbed" isn't at finding other people ERPing. I'm smirking right along with you there. It's being asked by a complete stranger if I want to ERP.

    The Great PW ERP Debate

As far as RP goes, I don't believe in sugar-coating things too much. As long as you keep the material appropriate for the age of the players involved, as far as I'm concerned you can do whatever you want with your characters. Hell, you can make them end up getting eaten by alligators with chainsaw tails after being indecently assaulted by a tentacular platypus for all I care.

    However.

As someone who's RPed for years, I've never ERPed, and frankly I feel uncomfortable around people who do. And the reason for that is that ERP is basically porn. Porn doesn't have to be in video format; yes, that really kinky sex scene in that book you otherwise don't really like is porn too. Now if you want porn, go for it; there's a whole internet full of it out there. I doubt you'll have any trouble finding it. But don't come looking to me to provide it for you. That's why I tend to chose not to do even regular RP with ERPers. I don't like RPing in places where I feel I might need to tell someone "no thanks" about something as intimate as that. If nothing else, some of us are either married or in long-term relationships, and while being asked to ERP might no bother some of those folks, it makes some of the others really uncomfortable. Assume the answer is no; you're not going to offend or upset anyone by refraining from asking them if they want to ERP, but you might by asking them.

    Jarl Asgrim 说:
Theres always the option to 'Fade to black'
    This. So much this.

I shouldn't even need to tell you that RPing the act of rape is disturbing, and I can't even begin to imagine why someone would want to do tha -- OK, that's not true. I can imagine why someone would want to do that, and it's sick. Again, if you want that as part of your character's story, fine; but put it in a damn memo. Yeesh. As for non-consenting ERP, perma-banning is the only option. Fortunately, that is apparently already against the rules.

I know there are some people who are either deliberately or accidentally going to misunderstand this, and say, "you're so staid! People in the real world have sex, so they should in RP too!" You want your characters to have sex? Knock yourselves out. Establish in role-play that rabbits are shamed by their ardor! Make a point of needing to go to the carpenter every week to get a new bed because the old one's falling to pieces! But if you feel the need to actually spell out the specific acts, then no, that's just creepy. RP-sex-as-plot is fine with me, but RP-sex-because-I'm-horny is just sad. It doesn't matter if it's not in global; if I know you're the kind of person who is aroused by pretending to engage in explicit sexual acts with a stranger on the server, under the dubious excuse of "it's part of the story!," then you're a creeper! Stay away from me! And if you simply must do it, there are plenty of chat programs out there, do it on one of those. Or in a sub-forum. (Which would also solve the problem of knowing who's going to be upset by being asked and who isn't.)

In a nutshell, what I'm saying is this: if you want the storyline of your character to include sex, perfectly fine by me. If you think the storyline needs the specifics, then you need to grow up; it doesn't need them, that's your second brain talking. And if you get your jollies from explicitly acting out the terrible traumatizing stuff, you're a truly twisted person.

Look at it like this: in D&D, might I chose to have one of my characters have sex with someone? Depending on the character, absolutely. Would I spell it out to the DM? No!

I've check that I've done the the right procedure but this conversation glitch keeps happening. By the way, running Warband on 1.143

    Can anyone Please HELP me.
    Three things.

First. That is a very large font, in very bold letters. Ow.

Second. Did you make a backup of the conversation file before working on it? If so, delete the one you modded, go back to the default one, make another backup of it, and start over.

Third. If you did not make a backup, go over all the changes you need to make, and double-check every single one of them. Errors in modding, and especially in code, can stare you in the face for hours before you even see them. I would especially check the last element of step 3.

Fourth. If all else fails, I have a backup of my conversation file made (I think) from before I made those changes myself. If you need it, I can give it to you. Alternatively, I implemented this mod on my computer, so here's what my changed convo file looks like. You can either copy-paste the changes if you like, or use them as a comparison to figure out what went wrong.

But before you do that, know this and beware: the reason Octavius says things like "copy the green letters" is because, as far as I know, your game's numbers might be different from his, and they might be different from mine. In other words, swapping what you have with what I have does not guarantee a fix.

Now, here are what the relevant lines look like currently for me.

Once an enemy starts swinging at you, how do you retaliate?

It could also be that the weapon you're being given for those bouts is one that you don't have a lot of skill points in, which would make your attacks slower. Do you notice this being worse with particular weapons?

The Mr. Green smiley is hated by pretty much everyone, except those using it.
... that, uh. That doesn't really say anything. You're basically saying that everyone hates it except those who don't hate it.
    So, yeah ...

I like having it, for the very simple reason that sometimes you just need a smiley with a big-ass grin. None of the other smilies really look quite right for that purpose. As for why it's green, I've got no clue. Personally, if I was going to get rid of any of them, it would be this benighted thing:

What the heck is it meant to be? Why is a man doing his best (not that it's very good) to look like a horse? GAH! *stabbity-stab*

Honestly, I don't especially care, just so long as there is a suitable replacement if it is removed. BUT! I do have one request of my own. If you do get rid of it and replace it with something else, can you please bring in wub?

Advices on how to fight from horseback?

It does take practice. I tend to find it helpful to use the forward-moving swings when charging at high speed, and the backwards-moving swings when casually sauntering through the melee, striking down at lowly peasants. Everyone who says the camera needs to be down and off to the side is very right. Make sure that your sword is long enough, too; might want to get one of the bastard swords. But the main thing that I found helped me was the camera angle. I'll try to post a few screenies showing good & bad angles.

    Your Favourite Weapon?

On my Nord main, for field work I go with this kit:
Heavy Bastard Sword for one-handed work, just in case I want a multi-use weapon.
Best Heater Shield I can find.
    Throwing Axes.
And last but not least, a Great Axe. That beauty sees the most work of them all. Tried the long variant, but it just doesn't feel as versatile to me. Great in a field battle, great against cavalry (one swing takes care of both the horse and the rider ), great in defending in sieges.

For attacking castles, I usually tell my troops to hide somewhere the enemy can't hit them, get a Strong Nomad Bow and as many arrows as I can find, and snipe the enemy until I run out of arrows, or they manage to take me down. Rinse and repeat.

Seriously, we were at war with the Rhodoks, the Nords, and the Vaegirs at the same time. Only reason we weren't at war with the Sarranids is because they're way far away, and the Khergits because they're down to two towns and I don't think they want to fight anyone right now.

Situation seems to be resolved now after lowering the difficulty. The same auto-resolve that before lost us a town and three castles let us take the town in question back with acceptable losses. Army composition is starting to look more reasonable.

Think I'm going to have to. Normally I play at full difficulty, and don't really have any significant problems; lose some, win most. Just tried to besiege Uxkhal, gave it up after we took 42 dead, 77 wounded to the enemy's 7 dead. Oi vey.

Very odd thing going on. Playing Polished Landscapes, don't know if that's significant. I'm with Swadia, and we are getting absolutely massacred, be it in normal battle or auto resolve. Exactly how spread is religion in the US?

    Evilknightz 说:
    I hope this doesn't make me a bad person. I don't give a **** if it is a person.

You hardly have a sense of self awareness till you have grown quite a bit. Does a splitting cell know that it is a living thing? I doubt it.

It shouldn't even BE a political argument. If a woman has something leeching off of her that she doesn't want, she can kill it, no?

This belongs right up there with such statements as "blacks aren't people," and "it's all the Jews' fault." Yes, yes, I know, Godwin's Law; I'll explain why I invoked it in just a second. The thing of it is, once you start defining person-hood as requiring self-awareness, then that means that "things" that don't have self-awareness aren't people; and this includes things other than a fetus, such as heavily mentally handicapped people. Or post-natal infants; after all, how self-aware are they? And they're still leeching off of their mothers, albeit through less direct means (after all, they're still just as dependent for survival on others as a fetus is).1 Well, what about people who aren't that mentally retarded, but are still pretty gaga? They're not all that self-aware, and they're just as taxing on those who have to support them; more so, in fact, if they're adults. Whatever can we do about all these annoying, inconvenient "things?"

    Voila. Aktion T4.
    EnthanasiePropaganda.jpg

Cheerful fellow in the back, isn't he? And why shouldn't he be, his wallet's going to be a lot fatter soon.

So, that's why the inevitable Godwin's Law reference came up. Once you start giving reasons like self-awareness or dependency and follow them through to their logical conclusions, that's where you end up.

    1
We will ignore for the moment the fact that Evilknightz is himself almost as dependent on others as the theoretical infant or fetus; dump him in the middle of a wilderness, away from supermarkets, and he will most likely starve (if only). We will also ignore that people who are bedridden through injuries are equally helpless, and dependent on support. We will, in fact, completely ignore the fact that being dependent on someone else in some way or another is an almost universal condition, and is one of the most poorly thought-out reasons for denying person-hood imaginable.

    Suggestion about Kaiserlicher Infantry Gun

FuryFire, I have to ask: is your sig from the Ciaphas Cain books? If so, you win a danish.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with the preference for the look of the curved arquebus over the stocky caliver, but I think I can see where people are coming from on that, especially when matched with the kettle helmet.

One of the other aesthetic problems with the arquebus, however, is that it doesn't really fit the overall design of the IS forces, which are based off of Prussian stuff around the time of the unification of Germany, which took place during the middle of the 19th century. The arquebus (for which there is apparently some kind of debate over the terminology which I'm not even going to try to solve, so here it refers to the gun in the mod) as it is featured in the mod seems to be a matchlock, which quite apart from the fact that it would have been supplanted by flintlocks, looks really out-of-place when compared with the rest of the IS gear, since it's a weapon more suitable to, say, the 17th century (hence, why it's used by the Laurians with their pike formations).

To see what I mean, look at this picture:
    020.jpg
Snazzy looking fellows, aren't they? They might've just come back from leave in L'Renouille. Now look at this picture:
    arquebusier16es-2.jpg
While equally splendid in his outfit, he is not quite from the same period, though he would fit in just fine in a Laurian formation ...

... right above my gun sights, swish Laurian bastards --

-- erm, where was I? Ah, right. While TEATRC handles the anachronism of its various forces rather well, this one is just kinda jarring.

The other thing that confuses me is that as far as balance goes, the arquebus and caliver don't actually seem that far off. Here's how they compare stat-wise, as listed from the troop tree window (which is awesome, BTW):

    Arquebus
    • Damage: 100(piercing)
    • Accuracy: 70
    • Speed: 38
    • Cost: 640 (dunno if this factors into troop upgrade cost or not)

    Caliver
    • Damage: 110(piercing)
    • Accuracy: 72
    • Speed: 38
    • Cost: 920

Cost is the greatest difference. Like I said, I don't know if that factors into troop costs; I used the Unofficial Troop Editor to fit my Infantry with calivers, and they cost 24 denars to upgrade, and 22 per a week. I'm guessing troop upgrades are based on tier, not equipment.
Damage is the next biggest difference, but in this case it's really not that large of a difference. Ordinarily I would call 10 points a significant difference, but considering that the arquebus already does 100, the difference isn't all that large. The caliver only does 10% more damage than the caliver.
Accuracy is the next difference, and for that it's a matter of two points. I'm not an expert on how accuracy works, but that does not seem like a very great difference.
Speed is that last issue, and this one surprised me, because apparently the arquebus is just as fast a weapon as the caliver.

Now, since the Kaiserlicher Infantry troop is higher-level than the Recruit, and thus has higher agility and a better Firearms score, he gets more out of his weapon than the Recruit, it's true. But considering the fairly small differences between the two weapons, I doubt that giving them calivers would make them vastly more powerful. It certainly doesn't seem to have in my game -- though sometimes I wish it did.

    Suggestion about Kaiserlicher Infantry Gun

So, here's something I've wondered about ever since I started playing this stupendous mod. You have Kaiserlicher Recruits, who have arquebuses. So do the Infantry. But the next tier up has the double-barreled caliver. Wouldn't it make more sense for the infantry to have the regular caliver? Not...
