Well, is there a reliable way to test troops strength? Like a mod that allows you to pit one unit type against another?

    Custom battle surprises

    jacobhinds 说:
Custom battles are unbalanced. Troops of varying tiers appear in random ratios so it's not really fit for testing the effectiveness of one troop type over another. Some factions are also misrepresented in that they're given multiplayer units to fill the gaps - just look at khergit infantry or rhodok cavalry.

Oh, that sucks. Well, there goes my theory

    Custom battle surprises

So, I've just tried the custom battle feature for the first time, and I got some results which surprised me. One surprise is that an army of Swadian ranged units consistently defeated an equally-sized army of Rhodok ranged units, despite Rhodoks seeming clearly superior on paper. My hypothesis...

What do you name your kingdom?

(moved) Renown - where did I go wrong?

That's a very strong garrison, so I doubt the AI will dare besieging it, unless enemy faction really grows out-of-hand. I'd get more top-tier cavalry though, for those field battles in the surrounding plains. I'd also build a prisoner tower and messenger post in your city, and watchtower/mill/post in the surrounding villages if you own them. Personally I think your RtR is already good enough to start your own kingdom (max is 99). I had an RtR of 0 when I started my kingdom, which is probably why Swadians and Rhodoks went so ape**** on me. Either way, you'll have to fight after you defect. Keep in mind that every time you recruit a lord it increases your RtR by 5, so after recruiting a few lords you should be golden. I prefer only recruiting honorable lords, as it saves me the trouble of having to resolve their disputes and managing the relations with them. However, honorable lords are also more loyal, thus harder to persuade to defect. I'd spy those who have no fiefs, usually those who recently defected from their previous faction.

I am surprised that your garrison does not have a morale problem by mixing that many faction troops.

I've never had any morale problem from fixing different faction troops in my garrison, either. I think only the troops from a faction you are at war with suffer morale penalty, and that's all.

(moved) Renown - where did I go wrong?

Taking on parties much larger than yours is really the only way. I suggest just garrisoning your army somewhere and going around with just your companions. It's more risky, but yields much higher rewards (more renown, more loot, more money, more exp for you and companions).

I don't even hire any troops until well into the game, and just go around with my companions until then, fighting bandit parties many times larger (mainly sea raiders). That way I can accumulate 1000+ renown relatively quickly. It's difficult at first, and you will lose sometimes, but eventually your companions can far surpass top-tier units, able to steamroll parties 10 times their size. Of course, the above strategy won't work if you make your companions into purely party-skill specialists. I allocate each companion just 1 (or 2 at most) party skills so that they don't have to sacrifice too much of their combat ability.

The Relation link I've looked at. I'm slowly building friends but DAMN it takes a long time! Like I said, the only way I've found to do it at all is to beat them on the battle field while a mercenary for another faction, then let them go. Doesn't half piss off the guys I'm working for though!

If you are doing well in a war, release everyone you capture to accumulate honor. You will automatically get 1 relation point for every 3 honor points with all honorable lords of the realm, of which there are 20-ish. So if, for example, you got 120 honor, you'll automatically get 40 relations with all honorable lords even if you never met them, and they'll be listed as your "friends".

    c) How do I take a castle to store troops without ending up in a permanent state of war with the faction I took it from? I just want to take it, then make friends again before they take it back...  and will it help?  I think I need higher "right to rule" right?  At what point of renown should I be sending out my companions to spread my fame?

Well if you take their castle, you bet they'll fight you, and likely they won't want peace for quite a while. Also, there's a very good chance that another faction will also declare war on you immediately afterwards, since you're a weakling upstart with low right to rule, no lords and 1 castle. Prepare for a long and bitter war afterwards. When I took my first castle in the current game, I had Swadians and Rhodoks pummeling me for what seemed like forever. They fought tooth and nail for that damn castle, and attempted to raid my village like every other hour. It was hard.

You can send out your companions at any point, regardless of renown.

    New Player- Getting Started.

Many ways to go about it. I begin by going around the cities winning tournaments and looking for companions to hire (some are incompatible, so you may want to  read "heroes" entry in warband wiki for details). Afterwards, I hang around Rivacheg a lot fighting sea raiders and tundra bandits for equipment, money and xp. Also do an odd quest here and there. For a while all the money I make I invest in productive enterprises in different cities, mainly dyeworks. I don't hire any troops until I'm past level 20 and ready to start my own kingdom, so I just go around with my companions until then. The upside is that you level a lot faster with a tiny party, and also can travel across the map extremely fast.

Don't AI lords increase their garrissons?

Seems like it. Seems like whatever I put in the castle/town before giving it off is all that'll stay there.

Why not? You lose 1 honor and some relation with all your nice lords, but it sure is preferable to 200 more days of thumb twiddling.

Well I try to RP as goody-two-shoes, but yeah I'll probably just start it myself. Weird, though, why AI doesn't attack.

    Nobody wants a war

Not very strong in terms of territory or number of lords. I have one town (Dhirim), 1 castle, and 13 lords.

    Nobody wants a war

It's been 200+ days since the last war. I've provoked numerous factions multiple times by stealing their lords, but they never responded to my provocations. They do however fight with each other a lot. Is this normal? I could of course force-start a war out of the blue, but I'd rather avoid...

Is there any good reason to train up farmers?

    Kharille 说:
They're a bit expensive after all that work, and not too effective are they?  Not quite like the Sword sisters.  I can understand them being expensive, short term solutions but saving a farmer from bandits and training up low quality, expensive troops?

You said it. They cost more than equivalent faction troops, and not as good as any top tier faction troop. The only benefit is they don't get morale penalty for fighting any faction. The only good neutral troops, imo, are in the manhunter line and the peasant woman line.

I only get farmers/mercs if I need to fill up the garrison right there and then, to discourage enemies from besieging right away.

    New player advice?

    JosieJ 说:
I tend to keep my party small (under 20 men) for as long as possible.  I also mount most, if not all, of my companions, for greater speed.  Keeping your party fairly small will ensure that you're getting renown from fighting groups of bandits larger than yours, and making sure your group is faster than everybody else means you control when you get into scraps.  I don't usually increase my troop until I'm ready to either be a merc for an extended period of time or join a faction.  Even then, I don't take it up too high until I either have or am ready to get my own castle/town.

Same here. In fact, I run around with just my companions up until I have enough skills, money and renown to start amassing a huscarl army to siege my first castle. Small party = fast movement across map, more exp for you and companions, more renown, and more money. This assuming you can handle facing parties which are several times larger, of course.

    New player advice?

sirballington gives good advice. Sea Raiders are a fantastic source of experience and loot; they spawn along the north coast, especially near Rivacheg. They may be tough initially, but try to face them on level terrain with heavy cavalry (5-10 swadian knights is all you need, really).

You can always supplement your experience (and income) by completing quests given by guild masters in towns, or village elders, or lords and kings.

Don't forget to pick up companions if you see them in taverns. They are heroes who can never die, but only get knocked out. You control their skills and equipment, just as you do with yourself. Later, they can become far more powerful than any regular units. You may want to read this: http://mountandblade.wikia.com/wiki/Heroes

    Village Improvements

Ah, thanks. Do you know if AI lords build improvements themselves?
  16. Uther

    Blunt, piercing or cutting?

I use both, but mostly cutting (long arming sword). On horseback it's perfectly adequate against most opponents, even with my modest power strike of 5. Against heavies and fast light cavalry I often use long awlpike. In sieges I use heavy morningstar.
  17. Uther

    Village Improvements

Do they have any effect if I build them before giving the village to a lord? Say, if I build a messenger post, will it effect how fast a lord will respond in case an enemy raids it? Also, if I give a village to a lord before I finish building an improvement (e.g. a mill) will it be completed...

    Crossbow or bow?

    Ivan Khan 说:
    Uther 说:
I go with a siege crossbow simply because I can't spare any points for power draw. I like to play a character with high surgery, wound treatment, training and persuasion and at least 2 in most other party skills. Maybe by level 60 I'll finally get a bow

Also, for companions I found horse archery to be very lackluster. The AI isn't good enough with it, even at high levels. I still make Baheshtur and Borcha mounted archers, but that's more for role-play purposes than anything. Giving companions good armor and a siege crossbow to use when dismounted seems like a better option.

You know lots of people say that but in my experience they do pretty well with it if you handle them correctly.

I guess it depends on your viewpoint. My Baheshtur is level 20-something with 6 PD and horse archery, but he's nowhere near my knight-type companions in terms of how many kills he brings in. The major benefit I guess is that horse archers tend to die less because they spend much of their time running away and avoid getting in the thick of battle. Also they act like a sort of chaotic element, helping distract and disrupt enemy formations while heavy  cavalry cuts them down. All in all I don't regret making them horse archers, I just wish they were more accurate and didn't miss 80% of the time.

How to lose relations with a faction

Oh, that sucks. If I opt to serve as a mercenary to a liege, will it be possible to start my own kingdom without losing honor? I recall reading that you can persuade the king to release you from your vows.
