    DRM Free release

I'll tell that to the cashier at the store the next time I visit. I bought this item once, so I should not have to pay for it again ...and I bought it from your competitor by the way, just to ensure you as a reseller and service won't gain any money whatsoever of this transaction, but you will still have to pay the employees in the store of which I take this item from! Jokes aside, there are points having a game be both non-DRM and DRM. Often non-DRM games get requested onto services like Steam anyway due to the community stuff that's available there, and DRM games get requested to create non-DRM alternatives due to reasons such as players want to ensure they are able to play the game offline after being gone from the computer for a year, etc.

That is a completely different argument. First of all, this is not a physical good. Buying it again literally nets you nothing. Second of all, it's not a consumable. It's not going to run out and require a second purchase. Valve doesnt care if you buy something from a competitor anyways. If they did, they wouldn't let you buy cd keys from other retailers (Humble, Amazon, Fanatical, Greenman Gaming, D2D, itch, etc, etc, etc.) and then activate them on Steam. They would mandate that any downloads from their service to be purchased from them.

Like I said before, if you want to play the M&B drm free, they give you a CD key on steam that can be used to play the exact same game from taleworld's page. The key is what tells the game you own it, and the same key is used regardless of whether you're playing on steam or the drm free version. You are not getting an extra copy of the game.

    DRM Free release

It's not a realistic point of view though. ...SNIP....
sure it is. The same argument is had any time a new console comes out. Where microsoft is fighting for your to be able to play all your old games on your current xbox instead of buying them again, Sony is wanting you to pay twice for the upgrade to the new playstation. Even the newest Xbox Series X can play games back to the original Xbox if you own the game digitally. In fact, a lot of old games get special upgrades for free when you run them on a newer system. Look at Red Dead Redemption. It will play off the original Xbox 360 disc, but has a 4K update applied. No one had to buy that game again and it runs on a completely different platform!

The point is that Taleworlds and a LOT of other devs provide DRM free copies of their games to anyone who has bought their game on one platform or another. Look at the Humble store, Itch, or IndieGala! several games sold there include a steam key as well as a downloadable drm free installer right in the same purchase. Metro Exodus even includes a Steam key and an Epic key in the same purchase!

It's not unrealistic to ask a dev to continue what they had already done for their old games with their current one, ESPECIALLY when they already have a DRM free build available.

I'm not asking for something for nothing here. I purchased the game, and they got the compensation for their work. What difference does it make to them how I play it?

    DRM Free release

I’m not asking them to run a charity. I’m asking them to do the same thing they have already done for every other game they have made. They don’t have to give out gog keys for steam purchases, that was just an example. I own all of their games on steam and every single one of them except bannerlord can be played by downloading the game from their website and inputting a key.

It is not having a separate copy of the game. They are both tied to the same key so if that key is given to someone else, it will have an error when both are used at the same time.

another option is to use gog connect that redeems automatically through Gog from one account and only one time.

I’m not here trying to argue about whether steam is better or not. Who cares? It’s just a preference. When epic came out, everyone moaned and whined that some new game wasn’t on steam. Take that view point and apply it to other people. Consider the fact that some people don’t want to or like that they have to have everything on steam. That may seem insane to you, but it doesn’t make it wrong.

    DRM Free release

Games on Steam can still be DRM free. I've owned many games that don't rely on Steam to launch. It's up to the devs to use it or not.
I have as well, and that is very nice. I would prefer being able to archive the game installer and especially be able to install it without needing steam/internet. My local internet isn’t the most reliable.

    DRM Free release

Not necessarily. If I was coming new to the game now, I would absolutely buy on gog. I try to get all my games there. However, since I am a day one purchaser, it would be nice to be thrown a bone and have the same experience I have had with each previous game.

    DRM Free release

Like I said above, they already sell bannerlord completely drm free on gog. They have a drm free release of every mount and blade game to date available on their website for anyone that has a key. You can get that key for the drm free version from your steam library, or through linking your account with taleworlds.

all I’m asking is for the same courtesy to be extended to bannerlord as well.

    DRM Free release

What exactly are you requesting? A DRM free version of bannerlord? It essentially starts existing the day it is cracked. There is a reason why SteamDRM is laughed at by the pirate community and the fact it takes less then a day for a steam game to be cracked.
A drm free version already exists officially. I’m not here to argue about how or when steam goes bankrupt. All I’m asking for is the drm free version to be made available through taleworlds website for those who own the game on steam, epic or any other store front.

    DRM Free release

Even if this happens (which is unrealistic) then Valve still won´t just lose all their money and customers in a day.

This just won´t happen. Epic tried to beat Steam, they are still faaaaaaaaar away to even offer the same features as Steam has. And Epic (Tencent) also has a lot of money.

There won´t be a new company which will suddenly appear and just "beat" Steam. Never!

Ubisoft, EA and Rockstar also tried to get their own "Store" (Launcher) working, but there are only like a handful of people who but their games directly from them instead of buying them from Steam.

I don´t have anything against DRM free stuff (why should I?) but to have the fear that Steam will disappear and so you can´t play your purchased Steam games anymore is just not realistic. It´s more realistic that I become the next US president #voteme .

I never said it would happen suddenly. Barnes and Noble was the goto for books for very long time until Amazon ramped up. Sears was in business for a hundred years and was a poster child of American businesses. Gamestop/EBGames were a huge power player for decades, but now are in the process of closing their doors. Blockbuster struggled on for years before giving up. All of them were huge successful companies. All of them are now on the brink of extinction. Digital companies are not immune either. Look at Myspace or Vine. Big companies that were shown up by competition! Twitter is even struggling, and they are huge!

Valve are doing very well for themselves, no one is disputing that. BUT, Today's performance does necessarily equate to what will be there tomorrow. What I'm saying is that someday, Valve will close their doors and their customers will be forced to move onto greener pastures. They are not immune. Epic, Uplay, and Origin may not be there yet, and they may very well not be the ones to kill them off, but SOMEONE, SOMEDAY will. There is no company that has existed for all of time, or will exist for all of time.

    DRM Free release

So in Steam, if you right click on your m&b games, it will show you a cd key. The demo version of Warband on Taleworld's page is actually the full game, just limited by the cd key. If you put the key in that you got from steam, it unlocks the full drm free version of the game for free. I hope something similar happens for Bannerlord.

    DRM Free release

The way I see it working is for those that have their steam account attached to their Taleworlds account, and being able to download it from there. It worked like that for M&B 1 and Warband. Several other games do this too. Factorio comes to mind.

    DRM Free release

I'm not worried about now, or even 5-10 years from now. No company is infallible, and really Valve fell into this position by chance. Something better WILL come along someday, and people will move on along with it.

    DRM Free release

Steam prints money, I don´t think it will ever go offline. Just think about them making 30% out of all sold games and dlcs (also ingame currency stuff I think).

Just give me all of their earnings they make in 30 minutes and I guess I don´t have to work ever again.

Of course they have to pay for the servers/employees/support and so on but still...Steam prints money.

No company lasts forever. It might take a while but they have no guarantees, game companies especially. The list of failed game companies is quite long. Hell, who's to say that Taleworlds will still be around in 5 years, or even have the option to patch out the drm on the steam version? No one expected that Sears would ever go out of business either, but someone came out with something better. Like it or not, Epic is starting to eat into Steam's bottom line with better payouts for devs. I don't think they will dethrone steam, or even that they are better, but everything has a shelf life.

The concept of ownership in the digital age is meaningless. The only hope you have for "owning" your games anymore is pushing studios to release drm free games. That is the only way you can have some kind of hope that your games will run in the future.

    DRM Free release

I asked about a DRM free release pretty soon before the game released on steam, and I was told there were no plans for the foreseeable future at that point. I couldn't wait, and decided to purchase the game through the Taleworlds Store as soon as it was available, hoping a drm free release would...

    Epic Games Store

I can’t speak for op, but I was going to buy from epic because I had an additional $10 off coupon from the winter sale. Also why not epic? epic gives a better cut to devs on sales than steam. I ended up buying from TaleWorlds in hopes of getting a drm free copy at some point in the future and because I could pay in bitcoin, but epic and steam are as bad as each other.

    GOG

Any hope for early access on GOG at the same time as steam? I’d prefer to get a drm free version from the get go and I try to purchase all my games from GOG. Thanks! I’m looking forward to bannerlord!
