the main problem the french faced was that their High Command was still stuck with antiquated tactics - some of their tanks (mainly the
Somua 35 and the
Char B1) were even superior to their german counterparts BUT; their were used to reinforce infantry instead of being massed as an armored spearhead to cut through enemy lines/spearheads.
this, along with a flawed perception of german advance plans - mainly the rush into belgium which provoked the subsequent encirclement of the french main armies when the germans broke through at sedan, accelerated the defeat.
germans actually experienced great difficulties crossing the Meuse, as well as sweated blood when the french broke their spell of disorganization and panic and managed to put up concentrated tank attacks (rommel witnessed his staff in a near panic when word came through that french tanks had broken through).
in retrospect, it all looks like a smoothly planned and carried out operation by the germans, but truth be told, the issue was more often than not unclear...
