Go to http://www.allegacademy.org/ and read the Cadet I stuff if you want to be useful to the team. There's a (mostly forum) program called Cadet that guides new players and you can ask any questions in there.

Its also recommended not to spend much time on the newbie servers or you could pick wrong habits.

Game is usually played on conquest:
-Team who destroys or caps all of the enemy's tech bases wins
Tech bases: Garrison, Tactical Lab., Supremacy Center. Expansion Complex. (Some factions have other special tech bases but this are the common ones)

As a new player, useful things you can do:
Defend miners. (They get you money for buying more tech)
Kill enemy miners.
Probe (so you can see inbound enemy bombers or other threats)

There is a Teamspeak channel (ts.alleg.net), there is usually some people there who can help you with questions. Or simply ask your doubts in the lobby.

There are also deathmatches in Allegiance, and FS2 is not so ready to go as it is like 2gb+ to download and then configure the network play, unlike allegiance(like 70mb and ready to go) where you could just set up a deathmatch and forget all about the strategics.

In Allegiance you can activate the mouse control at any time (if you havent modified the default controls) by pressing the numpad 0 ...

I also feel a bit dissapointed that not much people play FS2 online but it has some reasons like that it was not the original game main purpose, as I see FS2 it is more focused to missions rather than strategic and sector or area fights like in Allegiance, I had the chance to play a couple of games with some guys and they said people play FS2 more for its modded campaigns and stuff than for the online play due to the problems it has (I also think it would be hard for FS2 to keep people interested in the long run, as mere dogfighting can be fun but it can get boring if its the only thing to do after some time).

I started playing Allegiance the first week of January 07 and after a month of playing it regularly its not that hard to get the hand of it, you just have to behave like you would when for example (from the alleg forums) you start a new job, you dont go there challenging, blaming and expecting to be taken serious. You have to work your way up, asking, in a proper manner, when you have doubts and trying to be helpful and this way you will acquire more expierence and also respect from the other workmates (then you can start ordering people what to do )

Actually I start a new character from scratch with practically every major update. So many things change and to get the full experience there's really no substitute to starting over. It's a game - have fun exploring it and don't get hung up on character levels, stats and equipment

I do the same, as I see no point, right now, playing the vanilla version. I only played vanilla in a serious mood the first time I got the game as I didnt knew of the great mods this great community has. Im currently waiting for the .808 releases of various mods meanwhile Im playing other games to variate and not get bored.

Yea, it's jumper (2). I dont find it less cool than "N" as this is much difficult and represent a great challenge (at least for me).
