Just curious to see how other people approached sieging castles...
i did exactly the same thing as you my first game - war bow, 3 large packs of khergit arrows and i was off to catch meself a castle

lots of xp, the bow skill goes way up and i just feel good about shooting enemies in the head with a bow. i made the hired blades (any heavy armoured troop works well here) wait just next to the wall and so on and so on

everyone does it obviously. but as you mentioned, not a most honest tactic. still, all is fair in love and war

once i was able to capture a castle at my first go, but difficulty settings were low, so no wonder there. my second game (when .903 came out) i joined the Kherjit, and, as much as i love their troops, they just suck at siege. at least as archers they are ok, but to get the job done i hired some blades to capture the castle proper. only this time i decided to do it the old-fashioned way. i got some troops, charged them up the ladder, supported them with archers and my own trusty bow, and watched them die.

thing is, blades don't die until they get at least two spawns of troops with them, and so i was able to wear down the castle in several charges. i replenished my troops from taverns and villages every time before a charge, but the enemy's number stayed the same, even the wounded got healed very slow (?!). if morale gets low, kill something along the way to boost it. it's costly, but it somehow feels more real than one man taking an entire castle and i have the money for it. but if realism is not an issue, your tactic is pretty much the best one - almost no loss of troops, low loss of morale, tons of xp for you, great boost to bow/crossbow skills etc... good luck
