You can mine by (F)iring at mountains, walls, rubble and ice. Mining and laser drills help a lot, a few weapons - like disintegrators - help a little. Alternatively, you can get a mining bot and leave it on a planet, come back later to get loot. Mining through mountains takes several shots.
Prospector is awesome. Some beginners tips:
- Use your starter money to buy navigation computer and hire a better pilot and science officer.
- First just map planets; scan them, land, grab any easy loot. If you see ANYTHING that moves, run run run away! The chances are it will eat you! Don't land on special planets. Most of them are utterly deadly. Better not to risk it till you have big crew and good equipment.
- One exception; there is an advanced human colony somewhere always. They sell cybernetics you can't get from space stations, like third grade everything. Plus they sell loyalty chips... Put those in your experienced officers and they will neeeever leaveeee, neeeever let you goooo.
- Invest money into buying improved landing gear, best available sensors and ship detection system. Find drifting space hulks to loot. You can deal with most inhabitants by blasting a hole into hull with your weapons; this will vent them to vacuum. The worst offenders just shrug and proceed to eat your face. Anyway, you can find very good ship for free this way. Worse ships than you have are still worth looting. If/when you have a tractor beam, you can tow them to space stations and sell them.
- In personal equipment, invest into oxygen filters, extra oxygen tanks, binoculars and lamps. These will make exploration a lot safer.
- Even when you feel comfortable risking special planets, stay away from alien ruins. They contain big angry mech-like robots that will blast you to pieces. There are some other certain death planets, but it is more fun to let you folks find them on your own, bwahahaha.
- Regarding combat; camo armor allows your dudes to snipe at enemies without them detecting you. Just F)ire at them from far away. It is always good to have redshirts (security, snipers and paramedics), they take most of the hits instead of officers. Squad leaders improve the firepower etc of your grunts. Switch your team tactics to defensive; this will save lots of lives.
