    What's on your mind?

    Double post, I know.

Anyway, back in February/March I bought a house. It was a rushed decision tbh, I never finished moving in, and by summer I could tell that it was a mistake. Anyway, a few days before I was to sign the deal on the house, I came down with a cold. I had to postpone the final meeting with the realtor because the day I was supposed to meet him, I sounded like death and I couldn't go 5 minutes without blowing my nose. Now I'm selling the house, and my realtor wants to meet tomorrow to discuss the sale, and... I think I'm coming down with a cold. This would be funny if it wasn't for the fact that I'll probably spend all day tomorrow trying not to vomit. Wonderful. This is why I hate planning things in advance, because sometimes I feel like making plans is daring the universe to make me or someone else around me sick that day. Marvelous.

    What's on your mind?

Then I saw this thread in the notifications with your pfp and thought "hahahaha wouldnt it be funny if arvenski was coincidentally also talking about generative AI instead of his ongoing quest to find a farm wife". It's such a ridiculous coincidence that It'll probably take me days to fully process. Either I'm clairvoyant or the CIA has finally penetrated my tinfoil hat.
 That is a hell of a coincidence; I'm glad I provided you with some amusement.

Nothing worth reporting in regards to the wife quest. Clearly, I need to find other things to talk about.

    What's on your mind?

So, I've started playing around with an AI art generator website. It's fun. It's addictive to type in some prompts and then keep clicking the button to see what it comes up with every time. It's strange, though. Like, every once in a while the thing creates a beauty. That's when it gets all the details right and makes something that could almost be a real photo. Other times it struggles. Faces seem to be the hardest thing for it to get right: sometimes they'll be really realistic, but then other times I'll get image after image where the faces are messed up. The most common problem is with the eyes: one eye will be unnaturally large or shiny, while the other might be half shut. Down Syndrome faces are unfortunately common, too, and then every now and then I get cartoon abomination faces which are the worst.

edit: It is hella cool when it works, though. Like, I love creating stories, sometimes I'll dream up characters and a setting and keep building on them for months or years even (all in my head ofc, never written down). However, I am not an artist so I never thought I'd be able to see any of these imaginings pictured in front of me. Just now I typed a short description of a character of mine into the generator, and by like the second image I was like "Holy ****, that's actually her." Or at least, the images were reasonably close to how I imagine her. Technology is impressive.

Anyone else got any experience playing with these things? Jacob?

What TV series are you watching?

So I've been watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: I'd say it's mostly a fairly light Star Trek show: a fun way to spend 40-50 minutes without having to worry. The Trek nerds may find it odd that it references and adheres to events from the original 1960s series as if determined to hold on to what's canon, but at the same time it's not afraid to make changes or go in its own direction. Some of the characters are good examples of that.

Anyway, I just finished watching season 2, episode 8 "Under the Cloak of War": Had to be the best episode yet, holy ****. Like I said, I was expecting something fairly lightweight: instead, this episode was an emotionally gripping story of the lasting effects of PTSD, seen through the eyes of a battlefield doctor and a nurse. It also asked some thoughtful, intriguing questions about morality, justice, and more: Captain Pike: "Everyone deserves a second chance." Doctor M'Benga: "Doesn't everyone deserve to pay for their actions?" Good stuff.

What made you sad today? v.IV

I wrote a long-winded, unhappy rant here earlier, but didn't post it. Now I'm glad I didn't. I did email a therapist/counselor, though. I've never spoken to any kind of mental health professional before, but I hope it works out. It was kinda scary when I realized that I was feeling like suicide might be my only hope of finding contentment. I've never talked to anyone before because men in my family don't talk about that ****, they bury it deep down and keep going. I've tried to find my way through my issues on my own, but I'm clearly not succeeding. Here's hoping the lady calls/emails me back tomorrow.

TaleWorlds News: New News Necessary for the OT Neophytes

Thousands overwhelm New York's Union Square for streamer giveaway
A crowd of thousands that packed Manhattan's Union Square for a popular livestreamer's hyped giveaway got out of hand Friday afternoon, with some clambering on vehicles, hurling chairs and throwing punches, leaving police struggling to rein in the chaos.

Aerial TV news footage showed a surging, tightly packed crowd running through the streets, scaling structures in the park and snarling traffic.
Police planned to charged the streamer, Kai Cenat, with multiple counts of inciting a riot, unlawful assembly and possibly other crimes, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said in the evening. Officers arrested 65 people, including 30 juveniles.

Influencer to be charged after chaos erupts in New York City's Union Square
Influencer and Twitch streamer Kai Cenat will be charged with at least two counts of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly after thousands of people descended on Union Square in New York City Friday afternoon, police said.

The crowd was apparently responding to Cenat's promise of free PlayStations, sparking a chaotic scene and a massive police response.

What the ****. That's hilarious. I'd never heard of Kai Cenat, but as part of his restitution I hope they make him stay off social media. Enough with "influencers" doing stupid **** to get attention.

    Dating Thread, v. II

I'll admit I was obsessed with the girl I talked about several posts above, but that's mostly gone and I hope I won't do that ever again. Like you said, unattainable and frustrating.

This neighbor girl, I'm not obsessed with her, I'm just trying to take advantage of whatever opportunities life presents. I don't really have feelings for her other than noticing that she's cute, hardworking, and comes from a similar background as I do. It seems worth a shot, and I've noticed that I feel better about myself even when I try and fail, like today, because at least I was brave enough to try.

    Dating Thread, v. II

So, there have been many times where I've missed the opportunity to see someone important, especially girls. Like the girl who told me to look her up on FB, only for me to realize afterwards that I didn't know her full name. Or all the times I missed out on spending time with my crush when she visited the farm, because she'd visit on the day I wasn’t there, or on the days I had to leave early to go home and deal with my mother's problems for her (long story). Or all the times when I was too busy to talk, or she was in a hurry to leave, presumably so she could go home and watch TV. Anyway, I thought that **** was in the past.

So, there's this neighbor girl who I've liked for a couple of years. I've talked about her before. I asked her out last spring (2022), but she politely declined. I could have chosen my moment better: that was my fault. A month or so later I tried to see her at her parents' house, but was told she'd left for college the day before. (See where this is going?) I've been hoping for a chance to see her ever since she came home from college in June, but haven't had a chance. I think she's usually working or out with friends, and the couple times I've seen her car in the driveway I haven’t had the courage to stop. A few nights ago I was driving home when I saw her car at her grandparents' house. I thought this was my chance, but by the time I turned around she was leaving. ****. It did make me realize that she'll be going back to college soon, and if I don't see her soon I might not get another chance until the holidays. So this noon I stopped by her parents' house. Her car was there, so I mustered my courage and went to the door. I talked to her mom for a couple minutes, and then asked if the girl was there. Nope, she's just flown to New York City.

I know thsse sort of missed opportunities are going to happen every once in a while, that's life. But it's like this happens almost every time I might meet someone. It's like the universe is actively trying to arrange these failed non-encounters. What the actual ****.

Sorry for the textwall, I just needed to write out my thoughts. I'm not upset, I'm actually laughing, but this is starting to feel surreal.

What TV series are you watching?

It feels like a children's story at first, yes, especially with its youthful protagonists. It's not a children's show, though. Some of it would be too scary or sad for children, as you said, and they wouldn't grasp the show's messages. I would say the audience is "young adults"/teens, and adults.

From what I read online, the author of the books, Phillip Pullman, is working on another trilogy which expands the story, and is even darker. So yeah, not for kids.

Thanks for the reply. I went for a drive, which helped a lot. I feel a lot better now. Now I just need to keep myself from sinking back to where I was a few hours ago.

There's plenty I wish was different. I don't know if I can do anything about it, though.

What made you sad today? v.IV

Really not having a good day, mental health-wise. In fact I'd say this is the worst I've felt in a long time, perhaps in a couple of years. Whew. This sucks. And I don't really know what to do about it other than read or watch TV to try and distract my mind, and then go to bed tonight and hope things are better when I wake up tomorrow morning.

What TV series are you watching?

So, I just finished watching His Dark Materials season 3. I'm still processing it, so I'm far from reaching any final conclusions about the show, but I need to rant a bit:
I loved this show so much, until the end. In the first season, and throughout much of the next two, it's this beautiful, unique fantasy story. It's emotionally gripping, it has great characters, and some amazing performances: Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ariyon Bakare are all really good, and Ruth Wilson is awesome: she should've been nominated for an Emmy. It's a story with many messages and deeper meanings to consider: it's about growing up, and about parenthood, but it also delves into spiritualism and casts a critical eye at religion, religious institutions, and government.
And yet, all of that is undermined by a horrible ending in the last two episodes. The climactic confrontation between Asriel (James McAvoy), Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson), and the Big Baddie looks like something from a '90s B-movie, and then the slow-mo scene of all three falling to their deaths, their expressions frozen, is a trope that's been done before. It's a low blow to those characters (Asriel and Mrs. Coulter) to end them that way, to the actors who played them so well, and to the audience who missed the chance to see more great scenes between them and Dafne Keen's character, Lyra.

And then we get to the real steaming turd in the room, the final episode: The two young lead characters, Lyra and Will, who have already spent three epsides in season 3 on an overly dismal, dreary, deep side quest, finally get a break in a different world, and it's good to see things looking up for them at last. But, the multiverse is still dying, there is still work to do. Suddenly, a show that until now had featured zero sexualization (which was refreshing to me, I'm honestly bored with every story featuring sex and romance) suddenly has not one, but two scenes of Lyra and Will bathing together. Suddenly they're in love, they kiss (definitely not a teenagers first kiss either), and magic happens. The universe is healing, love has conquered all, and all that crap. Who knew that after all this time, all it took to fulfill prophecies and restore balance to the multiverse was two teenagers wanting to bang each other.

And then, for some complete bull**** reason that is invented on the spot, they're not allowed to be in the same world together. So, the rest of the episode is spent in goodbyes and tearful declarations of eternal love, even after the last scene fades to black. Both Will and Lyra are sent back to their old lives, as is a supporting character who seemed much happier in the new world than she did in her old one. (This bothered me in the Narnia stories too: what's the point of showing someone a new world with so many possibilities if they're not allowed to stay, but have to return to their old lives?) A unique, nuanced story becomes a massive cliche: yet another tale of thwarted, yet never-ending teenage love. I was almost ready to turn it off and throw the DVD out the window. It's as if the writers wrote up to the last two episodes and then said "Oh **** me, what do we do now?" and then handed it off to the B-movie writing team, but apparently this is how the book ends, too. What the ****, author? The story, the characters, and the audience all deserved a better ending.

    Resist, arvenski
I love Win 7. But, Steam is informing me that it is going to stop working on Windows 7 at the end of the year, and when I went to update one of my non-Steam games the other day, I was greeted with "You will not be able to play on this operating system." So, apparently resistance is futile.
