Quick question regarding bar fights: After winning a bar fight in the game, it sometimes (or always?) says that I have learned new fighting techniques. Is this message purely for roleplaying, or does it actually refer to some change in character stats/abilities etc.? Thanks!
No it does actually mean something, if you look at your 1Hweapon prof. before going in to a bar fight, and then look at it after is says 'You have increased your weapon prof. to x amount' it will have increased massively.
Mine went from 78 to 86 to 95 to 110 to 119 etc. and it's now at 320 just from bar fights

To blow up a wall requires 5 in engineering, right? So why should I increase the engineering skill after 5? Does he actually blow up the hole faster or what? Or does he make a mega-hole at 10 engineering?
Should I increase engineering after 5 or not?
Increasing the engineering skill decreases the time it takes to build ladders, demolish walls and other siege related actions, also it decreases the time and money needed to build things in villages or towns

Firearms Weapon Pack for Warband 1.134-1.143

Either get With Fire and Sword, or use a crossbow / bow. Heavy Siege XBow is pretty much a one hit kill on non heavily armoured troops.

When does a horse archer character begin to pay off?

It would take me till at least like level 20 to achieve anything similar to that kind of proficiency in archery. Why is it so ridiculous? I can bonk a sea raider from horseback and kill him in one shot with 2 power strike (what I started with) and a weapon I've only passively advanced. If I shoot a damn swadian bandit it takes 3 or 4 shots to kill him.

Oh, and I thought I read all you need is horse archery to around four, is that incorrect?

Do you have to kill the guy with an arrow to get a point to your archery proficiency? I get tons of points when I fight for my 2 handed axe, seemingly nothing for hitting guys like 30 times with arrows...

I know, it is maddeningly frustrating. You really have to pour a LOT of points into horse archery, but ultimately it pays off when you develop skill with it. The bonus would be being able to 1 hit an opponent with a headshot repeatedly. So then, you'd have to work on your own accuracy, compensating for move speed, watching for sheilds, enemy movement, etc etc. It's a hassle, but when you've got it down it'll make you feel like a king. Charge 30 mamlukes, have them chase you, then just shoot them while running away and you get 30 headshots and no damage taken to yourself.

I also agree that proficiencies for Archery is the slowest to upgrade. I don't know why exactly, but I think partly it's because it is determined by the difficulty of the shot, and for some reason even a headshot from the other side of the map only counts as a 4.0 difficulty (when there is a maximum of 10). My advice? Start shooting as soon as the game starts. If you even hit one guy, the difficulty of the shot should give you at least 2 points or so into your proficiency. Over time it'll build up. It's a bit of a hassle and even as a master horse archer I find myself thinking '****, I could just pick up that 2hander weapon over there and become 2x as deadly!', but horse archers have their usefulness.

And yes, you only need 3-4 points into horse archery. (I go with 3 because the inaccuracy actually HELPS me hit sometimes, sending the arrow a bit lower than where I pointed has scored me many a headshot)

Good advice, but the maximum shot difficulty is 12 and the horse archery skill needs to go up to about five for full power/full accuracy shots  Also best way of gaining wep prof as an archer is to check where the enemy are on the map and keep firing from afar (even if you can't see them, and wait until you start hitting then just very slowly advance the reticule down the screen compensating for their movement speed (once you hit it becomes easy) as this will give you lots of points   Also go for weakly armoured enemies (mountain bandits, forest bandits, looters etc) because high damage shots give more points.

Polish story line - step by step

Usually if you show the King's letter to the Marshal he will follow you and then loads of other lords will follow him
But it does help having high renown / relationship with the person you are asking.
If it doesn't work, take it yourself like I did with Koenigsberg:
There is always one ladder that is sparsely defended (3 guys usually), this will be your target.
Step 1: Get a decent One shot kill musket and 2 bags of heavy bullets (or 1 bag and a Turkish shield) and some decent armour is always useful. Put all  your best troops at the top of your party.
Step 2: Start the battle (battle size 30) get your men to 'hold position' pressed right up against the wall (with 'hold fire' on as well) charge up the poorly defended ladder, kill the people guarding it and rush into the turret / tower thingy on your right / left. There is usually one guy upstairs, try and kill him while he has his ranged weapon out (bullet drops).
Step 3: Sniper time: use the windows to your advantage; reload behind the stone and shoot from the window (the enemy marksmen should be involved in trying to shoot your soldiers below, and just continue this tactic. (rushing out and picking up some dropped bullets when low)
With this you can take whole castles / towns on your own  I've taken 4 towns and 8 castles with it.  One thing to add, once you've picked off a few of the marksmen, you can call your marksmen to follow you and they will start whittling away at the enemy as well.

Having a hard time getting kills while using a shield.

Shields are definitely worth it, cause archers and (Nords/Sarranids especially) throwing weapons are really annoying, so take a big heavy board shield and a kite shield, when climbing ladders , use the HBS with a heavy morningstar (1H) then switch to kite when you get onto the walls (unless you are facing a lot of archers right in front of you) and brain them all. Also you can use the MS 2H for added slaughter and facing melee troops (I find retreating while swinging gives you more space and they follow you in a column so it's easier).
One tactic I use is this: Requirements: Good armour (plate/faction elite) Good helmet (great/winged), Greaves (doesn't really matter but good if you want) Reinforced Heavy Board Shield, Reinforced Kite Shield/ Heater Shield, Heavy Morningstar, Large bag of Throwing Knives (optional)
Method: Go up the ladder 5th, with HBS equipped moving sideways (shields face the archers), let your men get a small foothold, totally ignore the melee units (or if some are really annoying you, kill'em) they may follow you, but they let up after a few paces. Go to the archer positions and wreak havoc with your MS 2H, then go back and chop the melee units up from behind.

I have had a constantly recurring bug on Warband, and now it seems to be appearing in WF&S as well, basically after I have saved and exited, and I load one of my save games, I have lost all my inventory items, (armour, weapons, food etc.) and also I go down to level '0', have no stats whatsoever and no weapon proficiency; a completely blank  profile if you wish and then after that I'm completely stuck (have to pay my troops, get new armour weapons, everything. As I said this happens in Warband too, so if anyone could please help, it would be very welcome

Which are better: Faction troops or fully equiped Mercs?

Just a question, that's probably going to make me look like a complete and utter retard, but how do you get faction troops?

    Strategy

I'm primarily an horse archer, and with quite a high power draw, shooting from horseback and 'bow' proficiency, I find that bringing the cavalry of to one side, with musketeers on a hill, and some heavy swordsmen just in front to protect them (heavy armoured cannon fodder) is the best strategy (when the enemy get too close, charge in with the infantry and musketeers, then after they're worn down charge in the cavalry. But also, if the enemy are doing the slow advance, I find doing a 'Cantabrian circle' (circling around them picking off the musketeers with headshots and killing horses). If they're not doing the slow advance and are just charging in, lure the cavalry off and keep shooting the horses, then pick off the musketeers.

In one of the Polish quests, where you have to fend off the Swedes from a village that contains a relic, the loot function doesn't work and this sometimes makes it crash. Also after you've routed the enemy, nearby you might see a party marked 'Warband' in grey with a very small amount of men, but if you attack them, the battle takes place in the village and the full force appears, this can wipe out your party pretty sharpish so watch out
