Not really. If a single man developer is incapable of predicting when something can be done, getting a ballpark estimate of an entire team is essentially arbitrary. Ypu can only really predict how long something will take if you've done the exact same thing before.
Often, release dates are imposed rather than estimates. Buggy AAA games are usually the result of publishers or team directors saying "finish it by this time" towards the beginning of a project. It's the same with any team project with money involved, even architecture or a film. Corporate middlemen like to run on schedules because it's easier to get investors and plan ahead, but with something as unpredictable and varied as a video game, imposing a schedule is like shooting yourself in the foot.
And on the flipside, not enforcing some kind of framework leads to ever increasing feature creep and neverending fiddling with things that are fine as is, but maybe possibly could be better if only that one thing was changed and so on......
I know, I have been in this situation many times.
Sometimes one needs to put a firm date on things to get those things done. Human nature. The art is in being realistic when setting the date.
In either case, at one point it does become clear when the thing will be done, imposed date or no imposed date. I am simply arguing that after 4,5 years in development, possible more, this date should be in sights by now for M&B 2 (hell, forget date, any kind of info about this game is really really few and far between). This either indicates poor PR on part of the developers and/or that something disturbing is going on with the development itself. Both scenarios are bad.
I am not upset or anything, I have so many things that need my time and so little free time to spare, it makes little difference to me if we wait longer. I am simply pointing out the obvious. But a lot of people here seem eager to defend the indefensible. Other developers, making other games, bigger games, larger teams, or smaller games, with smaller teams, have the same problems. Some of them also make their own engines. And they handle their communication with the core customer base much much better than this. Taleworlds is not some unique flower in the world. We have a whole field to compare them with and when I do that, they compare rather poorly.
