btw, what about having more unique Smiths and armorers? So, there should be one famous smith/armorer that would have only high quality weapons, but he would only sell his stuff if you are famous enough,etc..

are there any prerequisites for being a Mercenary?  I approached Swadian King to enlist as Mercenary, but i dont see that option, only become a vassal or enlist in his army as a soldier... and i remember i saw the option before..

another idea - what about changing the way how normal soldiers upgrade? instead of 7 predefined levels, normal soldiers could level up similar way as Heroes, but, if they reach certain level cap, it will be possible to upgrade them to different unit as it is right now. This way, longer you have certain soldiers, more experience they will get, and even if you dont upgrade them to higher tier unit, they might get better and better, so in the end, you can have level 40 Swadian Page, or Longbowmens...

level ups could be automatic based on different templates based on type of unit - infantry, archers or cavalry.

btw, any plans to do Arena fights more interesting? Current system is quite boring, plus most of the time not worth the time spend.. What about allowing player to bet on how many opponents at once he can put down instead of those any vs any fights? Winnings could be lowered by player level vs the level of opponents so at late stage, when player is powerful he would not be able to win big sum of money / or he would have to face more men to get same win ratio?

Yeah, i think amount of renown should be a combination of player's kills during the battle and overall dissadvantage vs enemy.. so if Player singlehandedly defeats all enemies while his army watches, he should get some positive renown... for that spectacle... in reality simple soldiers would make him look like a god himself for such deeds...

Which unit type you like most and why

i liked my Swadian Jocks, they were quite effective as second line chargers - most of the time i just called all cavalry and Jocks to follow me, then charged into enemy infantry to deal maximum damage.. Having Jocks to reinforce this attack after Cavalry momentum stops, is most of the time decisive.

    early guns

Simple handgonne was very cheap weapon (what do you think metal tube would cost?) used en masse during 100 year war. It was preferred weapon against heavy armored knights, especially during sieges (vs dismounted knights) its range was not that big, about 10-20m, but was relatively accurate at that range - while you couldnt hit the bullseye at that range, you definitly could hit the  man sized target.

Arquebuses came in late 14 early 15.century, again en masse used for example by Ottomans (during siege of Constantinople), later were adopted by Spanish, who used arquebuses together with crossbows. Again, cost of arquebuse wasn't too great, it depended on gunsmith, but higher quality pieces costs more (quality = accuracy and reduced possibility it will explode).

And regarding Native - if you look at all those weapons and armors in Native, you cannot say its 13.century - Full plate armor, gothic plates etc, those were only available same time as arquebuses appeared, Zweihanders  for example were used by 15-16.century Doppelsoldners...

so based on items available, Native is more similar to early 15.century and therefore gunpowder weapons should be available.

yeah, Having officers in the army is very good idea - battle plans should be given to them, player should just appoint the commander of certain group/division (from his companions) and then just give commands to that officer.. Divisions with officers should follow the orders more effectively than units without officer, amount of unit cohesion could be determined by tactics stat of each officer. Also if officer gets killed, unit should be more likely to rout, or loose the cohesion.

    H.T.'s Archery Tweaks

np, i just wanted to point out that stronger bows results in unrealistic casualties vs armors that should be much more resistant than they are now. Anyway i like the way how it is done, with strong bows to have lower accuracy.. Also arrow to be the damage modifier.. you should even reduce the damage of bow down, while increasing the arrow damage based on arrow type (training arrow, bodkin, etc...)

some interesting info about English Bows and their huge draw weight controversy...

By the way, I talked to a medieval anthropologist named Richard who shoots both crossbows and longbows and he shared an interesting theory with me. He's willing to swear by an academic work whose name escapes me at the moment that say the find of the Mary Rose has been misinterpreted to indicate that English archers used monstrously high draw weights like 185 or 200 lbs because the bows are so stiff and the skeletons found had disfigured spines. Its opinion was that remains of sailors were mislabeled as the skeletons of archers (supposedly there were only a few archers on board and a much larger crew) and that the back problems came from the crew's manual labor on the ship, and that the bow staves being carried were actually half-finished munitions bows in transportation with the intention that they would be shaved down by a bowyer when they reached their destination to suit the individual man who would draw it, therefore reducing its draw weight. Maybe they think so because the natural texture of the wood was left on the back of the bows. Anyway, if you believe that as this guy I talked to did, he was skeptical that all war bows were heavier than 110 pounds, arguing that a 190 pound bow is impossible for even a very strong man to draw. He thinks that the emphasis on the superhuman strength of English archers is a kind of historical myth perpetuated by England because it reinforces national pride and glorifies their ancestors. Certainly Mike Loades took the Mary Rose draw weights and construction at face value in the documentary.

Maybe Nords should all get some athletics build-in bonus so they wont be affected by increased weight? They were taller and stronger than normal populace anyway... Plus, Nords carry shields, they use Shieldwall which gives them bonuses vs arrows anyway..

btw, is there any plan to do something about Swadia inability to survive? they seem as the worst faction of all if lead by AI.. in most of my games they get wiped out quickly by others...

    H.T.'s Archery Tweaks

Do we atleast know what bonuses different type of projectiles have? what is the Penetration, Blunt and Cut damage formula? Because if we are stuck with single armor value for everything, it is still possible to modify the weapon values, so they will act properly vs armors - Let say, there will be certain distinction between armors, like let say Chainmail 20-40, Lamelar 30-50 and Plate 40-60. Then all you need to do is to change the attack values accordingly for certain weapons.

Another possibility is to differentiate them by protection AND weight. For example even if it sounds surprising, Plate armor was lighter than Chain or Lamelar, and didnt restricted movement as those two. But from technological perspective, it was  very costly to create. While Lamelar armor could have relativly similar protection values, it was incredibly heavy and unwieldy. Chainmail should be considered something like improved base armor, so while it should be more protective than padded armor, but it should be much heavier than Padded. Stuff like Coat of Plates were practically combination of chain and plate, having benefits of higher protection with disadvantage of heavy weight. I saw several tests with Chainmail vs Full Plate, where men in Full plate were more mobile than those in full Chainmail.
