What I'm really concerned about is the snek stronghold
From what the wiki says:
50 serpents
50 anacondas
100 cobras
300 armsmen
500 followers
Hey bud, what's up?
I really enjoyed reading your history on your currently playthrough, and I beg your perdon in advance for my not-so-good english proficience xD
I use to play pop from times to times, and I really do enjoy this mod. Although I'm not very active here in the forums, I'm always reading comments, even when i'm not playing, hahah. I can say I really love this work these guys done with this game...
About the snake stronghold, let me tell you my history with this quest:
Ive finished this grandmaster quest on about 6 different playthrouhgs, and every single time it was really, really hard and with a lot of reloads. But meanwhile i've noticed some things that might help your strategy, because after several playthroughs over the years, it happens that yersterday I had a surprise while doing this very quest: I've called 3 lords to help me [I was marshall], from ravenstern, every lord with 200+ men party, so something around 700+ party total. And I've managed to perform very well.
1: I's important to know the design of the fortress, so if you're familiar with it, it's fine, if not, take a search at google and look how the fortress is inside. It's very, very important. There's a corner in the top of the ladder where you can't be hit by the snakes, and you can hit-and-hide from there. Be very, very careful while climbing, using a shield is optional, but might help. I was a 2-hander with a crossbow and no shield, but somehow i've managed to climb it alone, just avoiding the bolts and javelins.
When you reach the left corner on the entrance of the gate, where you can hide, it's time to play a western bang-bang game hahah. But beware...
2: KotEG makes your life way easier. But when I joined them in previous playthroughs, I've noticed you need a lot of them to make them effective. Really, 80-100 koteg tear down those snakes without much strain.
But it's not your case, as you're fighting for the silvermists. I've tried with these once, and ohhh boy... so frustrating... I mean, they do really well while they still have ammo... and while the snakes elites are not charging towards them. They can beat the first two waves, but then they get overwhelmed by the weak cobra warriors, idk why.
3: I've tried with the empire armored crossbowmen, and was way easier. Still hard, but easier. They can soak a lot of damage, and when they run out of ammo you can charge with them as flodder until your next wave respawns. Mix them with a top armored unit [hurlscal? adventurer? something like that, just to disrupt enemy fire].
4: Empire Immortals works nicely too. But always remember, you won't be able to field many of them, as they're not your main kho.
5: As i've stated, in my currently playthrouhg I'm marshall of ravenstern, and what surprised me is that i've managed to do this quest on the first try! No need to reload. Ravenster rangers did most of the job, I had around 40 of them, plus the others from the aiding lords. Other unity that made me wonder was the ravenstern horsemen [yeah, the commoner, upgraded from ravenstern recruit]. They managed to survive a lot and kill a lot. They're weak on battlefield, but here they outperformed many good troops I had [I've joined the knights of the falcon, and poor ladies... amazing on the battlefield, but a pity when dismounted]. Kierguards survives fine aswell, but can't do many casualities to the enemies. Take a few of them with you, just in case.
6: Now, remember what i said about being aware while snipping the priestress and anaconda knights from that corner? Well, if you manage to take a lot of them down, something around 60, their reinforcment waves will begin to charge mindlessly. While this is a very good opportunity to place your archers outside the fortress [outside the entire place, not just down the ladder] and tell them to stand apart, then positioning your infantry and cavalry near the first entrance, your chance to survive until you reach your troops is very low hahah. Although every time I do this quest I never survive till the end of the battle... but it's up to you.
When the snakes begins to charge, it's mandatory to wait untill all their anacondas and priestress are beaten, before charging your troops. There will always be some cobra warriors until the very end, so be careful.
Now, one thing that really matters on this quest: the strategy on wich troops you want to spawn on your side, first, then later. You know, like the other sieges. The difference is that it's not a good idea to have just poor armored troops [eg archers] on the final of the battle. I've lost many, many times because of that, theyr armsman are weak but with so many left, you need troops that survives the most on the battlefield. That's why I think shielded infantry might be a good call. What about legionaries? or huscarls?
Oh, and i've played with maximum difficulty, damage, battle-size, etc, so yeah, I know what is frustration xD
Anyway, good luck with your gameplay, I have another character that i'm playing with realistic save, and this really makes the challenge way funnier.
Ohh, and as I do enjoy challenge, I'm using Doghotel's brainy bots mod with POP all the time. Hahahah, you should take a try and have more ~fun~
