That's interesting, I usually appoint some of my companions as vassals in order to get an army quickly... I'll try your idea for a change. This means that I have to start improving relations with other lords asap.
You can, but provided you did your ground work before starting the kingdom, it's better to "convert" lords, as that way you get +1 Lord, but your enemy loses 1 lord. Especially if you are taking the "good" ones, leaving the faction with bad lords that might run off etc etc.

Another post about late game being grindy - and what to do about it.

It's amusing to watch the evil lords do the "kingdom shuffle" as you keep on kicking them and they rotate though available kingdoms (potentially yours as well) and then finally just give up and leave the map. Potentially leaving you and your kingdom of "good" lords as the only ones left.

Especially because I have actually gotten shot in the head in one of those, and then second time around some weeks later gotten to take the gem from the chest.

The chest and the actual "hideout loot" (from winning the battle) are indeed different.

Starting this up again recently after I lost interest due to the warped face bug.  Was in ravenstern, collected tax from the King and sometime later he was being overrun 200 vs 1000 of those Green enemies.  I saved my game and jumped in.  Lucky to capture him, sold him off for 28000 and then decided to pay off 6000 to restore relations.  That was amazing.  Plus I acquired maybe 10 units of heavy infantry and now I don't need to run away from bandits.  Would've taken forever to train up ravenstern units.  Worked out great for me on this playthrough so far and its not even 15 days into this game.
Surprisingly, or maybe not, this has been the start of many of my playthroughs, getting someone (especially a king) and springboarding off the ransom.

Heavy Infantry CKO : Thoughts and how to optimize it ?

Well for CKO getting more speed on the weapon is nice, since you can of course up damage and speed by proficiency and power strike, but reaching truly insane speeds has its own bonus, plus at some point (when you're taking people out in one hit, or two where extra damage still needs two hits etc) you don't gain from more damage.

It feels like it's impossible to siege castles now

More people, uber-CKO, use vassals in a campaign size...

Taking the first few castles when starting a kingdom is one of the "harder" tasks for a CKO (if you have it before independence) though you could also just start off grinding lords and giving villages (if you had towns beforehand and thus villages)

He was mounted. If you stop the horse dead while the ragdoll falls off it freezes in that position. That happened there. You can produce quite a few funny poses that way.
Pretty sure that is rather frequent when enemy light cavalry (or such) get wasted by a volley of super Noldor bow PD10 Prof400+ CKO arrows.

A field of acrobats frozen mid-act.

-25% is for fully 2-handed weapons when mounted, IIRC.
It's funny to use things like that though, in fact seeing some knights use the 2h Sword of War, or Warhammer is quite amusing.

Especially when your CKO just shoot them in the head because -no shield-.

If your main aim is qualises and your bottleneck is finding people with them, it makes sense to actually "maximize your rumor asks".

Considering how underleveled all your companions are it looks suspicious.

One of the screenshots shows that he/she has all companions so they will level up a lot slower.
Makes sense to load up on them before qualising.

Also, depending on your favorite abusing, for Training reaching the breakpoint, then getting Trainer 10, and then just stacking more companions like that is hilarious depending on what specific elite non-noble thing you want to just never run out of.

Heavy D'shar Sabre in Early Game. Might not be the fastest, (80 speed), but the longest (125) 1h only  weapon. Useful for beginners on horse. The slow swing actually makes them even more useful for dismounting knights with it (no need for lances if you can just circle knights and slash their mounts until they fall down)
I actually love this one for the CKO sergeants. Knights get the Runed Bastard Sword because it looks cooler (both use shield).

Well, since we can have guaranteed 2-quiver CKO units, the RBS just got even cooler, but that long Sabre is so nice, I might keep it even rather than 2-hand weapons (it sure does good work) -- or rather use that with a shield and crossbow, rather than bow-2quiver.

A long post about lances and stuff

What's fun is the SUPER long lances seem to be longer than the AI soldiers' danger detection range or something.

Also, sometimes it feels like they're really careful whenever the player is couching (or else they die, but not before couching your horse down first) whereas the poke can still be stupidly powerful with a combination of (1) Power Strike, (2) Profiency, (3) Fast horse -especially Noldor Spirit Horse, of course - and (4) angle of approach that increases relative speed.

I find that there's some really nice long polearms (Black Iron Spear was mentioned, yeah) which combine a great range with high piercing damage. But then using the Blunt Tip Lance is so oddly satisfying because of that crunching sound.

Obviously, the Sarleon Banner lance is probably the best one in the game, though you can't take prisoners with it. Oddly, by the time I get it, I'm already so PS/Prof-ed up that I still down people really easily with the Blunt Tip so I keep using it anyway, even if the banner is kept in reserve.

how much reach do you gain by thrusting compared to lancing?

the jatu honor lance for example is 248 long while the longest knight lances are 253 (banner of Sarleon might be even longer)

Are you able to hit a knight lance before they hit you with the stab honor lance?
It's really not that great of a practice to go straight at them. If you are moving at the jatu from a say 60 degree angle, then you might have a situation where neither of you can couch the other, but you can poke with a massive speed bonus that will waste them.

    Feedback/observations for v3.9

The AI is less likely than the player to be able to immediately rush and take back fiefs. As in, the player walks up and basically instantly ladders it back down.

Which is sort of an amusing way to mess with the AI factions, as their marshal has problems due to controversy from "losing" fiefs after taking them.

It can be even better if you're in an AI faction still, both sides end up having problems due to "losing" the same fief to the other repeatedly. Can be funny to extend the life of an otherwise dying faction by having them tread water on a few castles over and over.

Mettenheim Regular Crossbow unit too accurate?

Yeah, I like the Arbalest-wielding Heavy Crossbowmen, but obviously if you're kitting out say CKO it's probably 10PD-Noldor Bows, even if you need to be a bit careful with their ammo.

As far as "things you can mass" though, I really like the Heavy Crossbowmen. I tend to coddle my ranged units a lot, but micro my infantry and horse, so it's probably that bias that makes me like watching people die to arbalests as I move about with my melee units.

    [DISCUSSION] Fan Suggestion Thread

Huh, yeah. If you help a claimant win, the original king/khan etc disappears along with their weapon. You only get those by demolishing an original faction leader...

One of the interesting challenges is to keep Sarleon on life support until you're ready to swoop in and get that lance (if you want that weapon) since sometimes it seems they try to spite you by dying.

    Piercing vs slicing vs blunt

For some of the most important cases where you get a choice (yourself, companions, CKO units) you also have the potential to select power strike and proficiency, which as we know can allow people to, even more, cut through plate armor and so on.

Does anyone know if it's better to be very aggressive in war or to be defensive ? I'm the marshall but all we do is ping pong (We take something, they take something ect...) If I try to hold what we conquer they just go take something else, I've tried to outpace them by taking 3 castles in a row but all I've done is completely deplete the army of the kingdom and now all the lords are weak and need to rebuild.

I think I'll try to capture a lot more of their lords, I release like 80% of them I don't know what's the rate for rebuilding an army but I thought I'd have some time before they come back, maybe that's the problem.
A lord that spawns in refills their army pretty fast. Certainly, I think lords following you (on campaign) do not refill, meaning you have a bit of an issue.

If you lock up many of their lords that helps a lot as they will obviously not be generating new troops. Doing this early helps (I don't remember the rules on how the AI kings get to give castles and their refilling, but being on campaign causes some issues)

Anyone else thinks D'shar Troop Tree is too strong right now?

    bobknight said:
No pure faction army can possibly stand up against a mixed force of cherry picked 'optimal' troops if you are using brute force tactics. Each army has their own unique play style, D"shar just happens to be more flexible than most due to their scaling late game units.
They have some interesting things. Though I'd say there are plenty of non-brute force tactics that still don't find D'shar troops worth cherry picking. Player cherry picking can be really powerful, even (or especially) when having available amazing Trainer capabilities and of course the CKO knight/sergeant options.
