  1. Ukraine Today

    Threadsurrect.

Can anyone direct me to good sources of information, reasonably frequently updated, about the war? Things like troop movements, force dispositions, ongoing battles, major events, new developments etc. Perhaps with media attached like video of an assault, but not necessarily small updates like "see this APC vs. Bradley" that you find on YouTube. Just an ongoing assessment of the progress of the conflict.

I live in Australia and we receive very little information about things that don't happen here or in the US, or aren't major events like the Gaza war. For Ukraine the updates are few and far between, and I find myself drawing a blank on information about one of the major wars of the 21st century, something I should know a lot about. Apart from nightly news I read the Guardian. I'm looking for something more intimate, updated fairly regularly.

Or just list the sources you get your info from, that will help.

edit: thank you Weaver, that was an excellent suite.
  2. What made you sad today? v.IV

Just discovered one of the pieces of a story I wrote is gone. I spilled water on my laptop and fried the HDD; we tried to stick it into my new one but not even Linux would read it. Nothing too dramatic - but when you write a piece when you're 'in the zone' it's hard to replicate. I'll have to write it again. **** happens.

Also Ektwp, I hope things get better. Seems you're in the adolescent zone where things are as hard as they come (and I don't mean to be condescending). Whether or not success reaches you, things get better later on.

I think you guys take your liquor too seriously and it's really not that bad, but ok.

I dunno much about this but good vodka is basically ethanol + water anyway, AFAIC, so you get what you pay for. I'm partial to this stuff:

  5. Mount&Blade/Warband - Are you still playing?!?!

Everyone has had the same experience Quixote, it's how we all got here in the first place, but most of us started in the pre 1.011 days when MB was still beta. I played when the group of people I knew, most of them in my clan, played regularly. It was less elitist, more popular amongst a tighter and character-filled group of people and always had a few surprises in store, even long after release. Now it's like jumping onto an old MP server for a bygone game just because. I recognize a few names and the aliases of the bored drunk oldies are easy to pick, but it's not the same atmosphere. The game was enjoyable but I never really fell for it. It seemed to me like potential wasted, and then I moved on as everyone does.

  9. [MP] Add option for Direct IP to Join menu

Simple suggestion which shouldn't be too difficult to implement. When hosting anything but a dedicated server my friend and I have problems - with a listen server I simply can't see his server and he can't see mine, and using 3rd party VPN software like Hamachi we can see each other but get an...

Old beta trick we learned when the new versions went ass-about-face; merely change the DL path. There's a thread around, but I can't seem to find it and I doubt it's updated past 1.0001 anyway.

  14. 50+ Hours No Sleep

Not "crazy", but there are a lot of strange symptoms that set in after a week - we're talking over 100 hours of being awake -  of sleeplessness. Unfortunately most of the documentation of this is usually correlated with drug use because most people can't stay awake that long without some exterior interference, but rest assured, you will have odd psychological issues long before your body begins to break down if you don't sleep. Usually you also don't eat, so you have no fuel to build neurotransmitters, carbs for energy, etc, and your system gets stretched, and the first thing that's affected is your mood. Um, anyway.

So since Saturday Morning I've been awake, I cannot sleep for the life of me I've tried it all. Any suggestions? And what are some negative effects this major lack of sleep will be having on me?
Mostly psychological. 72 hours and you should be worried. After about a week you'll start to go crazy, according to the literature. The physical stuff starts after that. If there's no serious physiological error in your genetic makeup, (ie what Kronic mentioned earlier), eventually your brain will just stop and make you sleep; you can't exactly outrun it, it will happen. You will sleep eventually. For me it comes and goes in phases.

As a chronic insomniac I can say there are few things that can help - especially if it's long-term. If it persists for a little longer see an actual GP and investigate what's going on, don't just ask him to shower you with benzos, because it could be something as simple as a viral or bacterial infection that has gotten out of hand, they have a huge tendency to completely screw your endocrine system and affect when/how you sleep.

I've met plenty of people who have massive binges of sleeplessness where there is no discernable cause - plenty of my friends go through it. Usually it has to do with some kind of systemic disturbance, even something as simple as a common cold. It's icy over here for instance and I've had various issues here and there that exacerbate it. Apart from that, analyse anything you're taking for say blood pressure or depression for stimulant properties; if there's nothing, then I really wouldn't worry about it unless it gets to the point that you are profoundly disturbed and frightened by your lack of sleep, to a pathological level, wherupon you go to a doctor and find out wtf is going on.

There are a couple of OTC/supplemental remedies like benadryl or phenibut but they tend to just temporarily alleviate things and induce tolerance.

    edit: oops, a bit late.

Dude, infection. Probably regular old influenza or something. Make an appointment and investigate, they will treat you and defer the pay if it's serious enough that you're going to die, which you're not, because you're just being dramatic. Stop being a numpty and get off the forums and treat yourself
  16. Cannot see friend's server

Warband hates Hamachi, I had the same problem with Hutch, and we weren't able to solve it. Which is funny because I see plenty of other non-dedicated servers around, but whenever one of us tries to host, it's impossible. Warband really needs a Direct IP option, that would be a lifesaver.

If you can manage to get a dedicated server up and running (you can just join your own from the same PC, but watch out for skyrocketing pings when there's more than two people on), then you'll see him. I can see friends that way but a listen server is useless.

That seems extremely likely, I've always just contributed the flu like symptoms to drug use but this makes much more sense. I'm definitely bringing this up in a week at my next appointment with the sleep doctor guy, title escapes me.

Edit: Is it possible for mononucleosis to have been long term? This has been somewhat of a problem for thelast 8 years.
Yes, and that's commonly the case. There's an acute period after infection and then some people develop a chronic form, known as chronic fatigue or mononucleosis. Ask your doc (might need to go to a regular one not a sleep specialist) for a blood test for Epstein-Barr antibodies; if you have them, then you either have or have had the principle virus that causes it.

It's a real mother****er of a virus for sure. It attacks your lymphatic system which is essential to immunity, and your liver and kidneys. Once you've got it it becomes dormant in your lymphocytes, and you can get outbreaks every now and then when you're overstressed or have another infection or something. If you have heaps of these your immune system becomes overactivated and you're at risk for all sorts of autoimmune conditions, as well as lymphatic cancer.

I recently had an episode of hepatitis (inflamed liver) which I attributed to meds + alcohol, but when I looked at the symptoms I knew it was EB again, or, as well. Had a pretty severe case in my teens. So now I have a CFS relapse as well as a ****ed liver. Yay.

TL;DR: it's worth checking out, so at least you know. Most people are merely tired and worn out and benefit from the usual stuff, good diet, exercise etc.

Yeah, but blubber isn't a good thing to have in a combat sport. It means you have to throw more weight around and you tire out much faster. In the lower weight classes, possessing a substantial amount of fat is also going to bump you into a weight class where you'll be pretty out of your depth. It also indicates that you aren't doing nearly enough training, or that you're eating the wrong stuff.
It's more about the build & body type than the blubber. Fighters can look 'fat' and still be incredibly strong and have a massive amount of endurance. They also tend to have iron chins and be able to soak up punishment like a shambler soaks up rockets D:
