After a successful Warband Revival League which saw Commando Oida dominate all opposition to lift the trophy in the grand-final against Apis Europae, a part of the scene expressed the wish to stand aloof from division based format and attempt a return to traditionally more competitive and entertaining formats. Answering the call was most-established admin trio Aeronwen, Deacon & Scar who settled on bringing back one of warband greatest competition of all time, the European Championship Series.

With the help of Yamipirate and Bullez - who have both been instrumental in the success of recent tournaments - the ECS admin team intends to inspire a new breath within a warband competitive scene which has not yet been fully convinced by what Bannerlord currently offers for competitive grounds. Straying somewhat from the format which established the ECS has one of the most competitive tournaments in the scene, this fourth edition will have the challenging aim of creating more high-stakes matches than recent competitions did, without risking to exclude smaller teams in the early stages.

The tournament's structure has been therefore reworked, with the first 12 seeded teams being spread in three different groups, A, B & C whereas the 7 remaining ones will fight each other in Group D. This should hopefully provide for a fair middle-ground where most encounters remain exciting and where the less experienced teams don't exit the tournament after two stomps.

Last week's derby between the Tactics teams held all its promises as it was a tense battle, each team being decisive on one of the two maps. Kebab Tactics took the win in the end but only from a small margin and they will now have to face the tournament's favourite and winner of the WRL, Commando OIDA. This makes for THE most awaited match of the ECS4 this week and we will try to talk you through the key aspects of that encounter between these two juggernauts.

Last week, we presented you the match between KT & BT as a must-watch and neither teams disappointed us. Tonight should be no different has this encounter has every sign of an early final between the two favourites of the Championship Group.

Winner of the Warband Revival League and before that, of the Warband Native League 8 (as Unity), OIDA is looking to increase their dominance on the late portion of that late competitive era by winning their third major trophy in a row. Such a feat of arms has only been achieved by a couple of teams in 10 years of competitive warband and although the scene isn't what it used to be, the fame coming with such an accomplishment would still be a huge statement concerning the constancy of OIDA's players.

To stand in their way is Kebab Tactics, led by SirAlecks & Samu. After a valiant but rusty Apis Europae was unable to really contest OIDA in the WRL's grand-final, people were wondering as for who would be the next team to try and contest them. One of the answers was the creation of Kebab Tactics, a superstar team built with a strong 'Frontline Tactics' spirit but with new rising top players such as huN or Mace joining forces with usual suspects Gibby, Ciiges or Menethil, to only name a few of them.

It is unsure whether Kebab Tactics will be sticking around after this tournament, as the team seems to have been assembled for the sole purposing of giving a proper contest to OIDA but what's certain is that both teams have every chance of taking the title and should therefore give us one blast of a match. It's also worth noting that Brian, one of OIDA's best performer, will be suspended tonight. Although he will be back starting from next week on, it's indisputable that this a huge loss for its team to not be able to count on him in such an important match. Nevertheless, their roster has a lot of depth, with many of their players capable to switch between cavalry and infantry (the two classes played by Brian) and there is absolutely no doubt that they will come into this game with a gameplan where they can come out on top, even without one of their best players present.

But more than a simple ego contest (or dress rehearsal before the actual grand-final), this match has more implications than it may seem. As the Championship Group is meant to last three weeks only, whoever wins this match will take a solid option for the grand-final between the first and the second team of the group. On the other hand, the loser will end up in a dire situation, forced to win their last match but also with their faith no longer completely in their hands as they may depend from other match-ups results to qualify for that very last week.

As the match's debut comes closer and closer, pressure starts to build up. Thunderbeu and Viktor are ready to bring you warband's top-level once more on BladeCast_TV. Come join us, at 20:00 GMT and witness greatness!

As Drüberfahrn look to take on Backline Tactics in the second week of the Championship group, we had the chance to ask some questions to Augustus (with Vincent's help) about their run in the ECS4.

Q: Many of the faces in Drüberfahrn are well known in the community, but it had been a while since the scene hadn’t seen such an experienced and powerful german speaking team take part in a tournament. How did it work to gather all these lads for the ECS4?

A:
Augustus, Vincent, bullez and Ascarion went into this tournament with the vision of creating a new team project that's entirely german speaking, as something like that hadn't been attempted for a while. In the beginning, we were planning to put together an even stronger roster, but some of the players ended up playing in different teams. So we had to improvise a little bit when it came to putting together a strong roster, but this was also a blessing in disguise, as we managed to get in touch with people we hadn't thought of before that turned out to be great assets to the team, both in terms of skill and personality. I would be lying if I said we were all close friends before we made the team, but we surely grew close and the team atmosphere is impeccable.

Q: We got the chance to stream your first-week encounter against Time Travellers and although you guys managed to take a convincing win in the end, the first map was a close and tense battle. Did you expect that much resistance from them and how did you approach - not only that opening match - but also the tournament in general?

A: It was clear to us that none of the matches in our group would be easy, as we came together as a new team with players - although all german - from many different backgrounds within the warband community. It was imperative for us that we learn to play together, deal with tactics, deal with personal weaknesses and improve team cohesion and this was and still is a tough journey for us to pull off. We didnt expect our first match to be easy, as TT is also a very strong team with big names, and at no point did we expect an easy victory, so the first map being hard was no surprise for us whatsoever and we appreciated the good fight we had.

Q: There was a large controversy about the deciding rematch between you and Time Travellers in week 3, as neither teams wanted to take the win and therefore qualify for the hardest group. Can you talk us through your team’s reasoning at the time and how did you take the admin decision to hand you guys the default win?

A: As this is our first tournament playing together we signed up to play in Division B or similar, we've always had close scrims against teams of that level, so to us, it seemed logical we would end up in the Masters League. However the tournament was the designed in a way that would make us end up in the Champions League if we won a match we had already played previously, which at first, we were very frustrated about, and so was TT because winning for either team would've meant playing in a Division where arguably all teams are better. Since TT didn't want to play the match and we felt just as frustrated as them we went the same route as to not just receive a default win. When there was the thread of being expelled from the tournament because of these decisions we made, we decided to move forward and take the default win for the sake of being able to keep playing together. For us, not playing for the rest of the tournament was simply not an option.

Augustus about the rematch vs T said:
[...] we decided to move forward and take the default win for the sake of being able to keep playing together. For us, not playing for the rest of the tournament was simply not an option.

Q: Given how close of a match you had against The Real GIGASTACK, did that eventually change your mind about how you guys could perform in the Championship Group or do you still believe you don’t belong here?

A:
After it was decided we had to play in Champions League we changed the team attitude a little bit, because losing is never fun and went ahead in trying even harder to improve. We had noticed a learning curve throughout the first weeks of the tournament and worked on steepening it. The result was a match that was closer than it would've been two weeks before, but we still lost. We are immensely proud of the guys for trying as hard as they are though and will keep doing so in the upcoming matches, which will all be uphill struggles.

Q:
Backline Tactics was the hot sensation of last week, almost upsetting one of the big favorite teams. Your encounter in the second week of Group B against their opponent from last week - and other ‘Tactics’ team - wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for you guys. Do you expect to have any different against BT tonight?

A: As I already mentioned we are taking a different approach in our preparation, both tactically and in terms of team cohesion. We are trying very hard to win every match, but it remains to be seen if we are able to pull off an upset.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with the community?

A: Even though we were quite frustrated with the tournament administration for a little bit we are still very grateful for the tournament and given the circumstances we do consider it a success. It's great that there are always people to run tournaments like this one; Deacon, bullez, yami and Aeronwen are doing an excellent job.
