I'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere. I'm saying it anyway.

If longswords are gonna be in the game, please give us a way to flip our longswords around and grab them by the blade. If I'm gonna lug one around, I'd prefer the option to bash through armor without having to carry a sidearm mace. I don't care if it's official or modded, but someone please let us do this.

Even though this is a great idea, I think that by implementing that grip, there would be too much players who would only use this weapon, because of its versatility. I think the devs want us to use different weapon types to play out their different strengthes.

That is actually a good point... I'd probably never use maces if I could just bludgeon enemies at length with my longsword.

Perhaps if it was limited to overhead

Maybe if it was limited to Overhead/Right-Side strikes? The range would be shorter anyhow. Would you even be able to block like that?

Edit: oooooh I just realized that's a flayed man in your avatar

(Yep! You're actually the first one to voice notice, here or on Steam, that the whole point of using Michael Bolton as a name was to be a Game of Thrones pun. I'm surprised it's taken this long, particularly on Steam where less of it is cut off...)

While half-swording? You probably would, yeah. I reckon it'd look a lot like polearm blocks.

I suppose I was looking at it from a perspective of leather-gloved/un-gloved user. I would imagine it would be easier to cut up your palms that way? I only watched one video on half-swording and the guy wasn't using gloves. Said you could avoid cuts if you just don't let your hands slide on the blade, but I'd expect deflecting a blow could make that a little harder? I dunno.

Whilst this idea is good, I think it needs some nerfs(because as Alaric said the devs wants us to use different weapons) Hitting an enemy with a pommel would probably damage the pommel, So maybe after 3 or 4 hits with the pommel, it gets damaged and after that, you swing your sword slower or sword deals lesser damage.

Was about to say maybe a nerf could be it damages your weapon more on use and maybe limit the way you could swing with pommel like an overhead swing, that was mentioned above

Yeah, I can see how taking blows to the blade might make it easier to cut your hands. I do for sure like the pommel damage idea as a potential balancer. Potentially, it shouldn't do as much damage as a proper mace, either. A proper mace is heavier and should thus have more trauma potential.

This alternate grip would be so nerfed it would become poitless to consider using.
Some kind of humiliation to be beaten by that in the multiplayer ?

One way to make it more balanced would be that using as sword like that, is not nearly as effective as a weapon designed for the purpose. so far less damage, making it only something you could do when desperate, but it would be far from the best tool for the job.

And this is reasonable. After all, there's a reason maces were prevalent at the same time as the longsword. I think if one were to implement it, this would be the best way to balance it without making other bludgeons obsolete.

Another thing to consider is that we do have physics-based damage now. Perhaps the lighter weight of the longsword, or the nature of the pommel bash animation itself, would make it trickier to land a high-damage shot. So the potential for high damage remains, but it's far less reliable to achieve than with something like a mace.

Im guessing this here might have been the video you were talking about, where he shows its very much possible without gloves.
Pretty sure he has another video where he does it even more, without thin gloves.

Yeah

Yeah that's the one. I'm saying I'd be curious if deflecting a blow would make it more likely you'd slip up and cut yourself. Hitting a tire in a controlled environment must be pretty different from fighting some brute with a giant axe.

But most chars will have mail/leather gloves anyway so whatever

Yeah

I think it would mostly be a danger if someone could pull the sword out of your hands, but i dont know.

Unusual grips like Mordhau (not half-swording which is something different) are interesting, but not something that would have seen much use outside ritualised duels. The Mordhau grip is designed for two armoured combatants but the chances of two longsword-wielding armoured soldiers coming into contact on any battlefield at any point in history is extremely slim.

Gameplay-wise, it just gives more versatility to the 2h sword which is already a bit of a meme weapon in warband. I'd much rather see a greater diversity of weapons with specialised roles than just giving a bunch of cannibalising mechanics to the longsword.
