More interestingly - every member of my clan instantly died, but the kingdom of the same name still exists... but with no leader. And it says the character I'm playing is dead in the encyclopedia.

This just happened to me as well on PC. I selected my brother as heir, and now access to nearly all game functions is locked out. Menus have disappeared, and kingdom decisions bubbles either instantly disappear after popping up, or if I can click on them in time it says "No Longer Relevant"
