Geez, I hardly find the time to work on the map or texture easy things like shields and you're talking about different types of armor. I have to admit that there is only a vanishing slim chance that I could present you with completely new armor meshes. Most of all, I doubt they would look even halfway decent. ^^

But then again, I sincerely appreciate your interest in the mod and I always think a healthy discussion is the best motor for a project. If you ask me, I tend to imagine Gregor Clegane in armor which looks a lot like Milanese-type armor. When I read that the design of Milanese armor resulted in more glancing hits, it immediately reminded me of the duel against Doran Martell, where this was exactly the problem the dornishman had.

I don't remember the description of Tywin Lannister's armor, though, but when I think about it, the picture that comes to mind looks like a cross between "Gothic" and "Alwite" armor.

Well, I have a few hours before sleep will become inevitable, so I'll better get back to work on the map.

I so very hear you! ;D

The first version of the Bolton shield was much more colorful and had the 'de sang' field utterly look like it was tiled (which it actually was and still is ^^). Yesterday I couldn't stand it anymore and went to reduce the saturation of the texture by 1/3... Still, I'm always thinking: "Pink... gosh... it's pink." My girlfriend loves it though.

The most recent is the Arryn shield. I experimented with a row of effects in order to make it look more 'painted', but ingame it all turns out like some paint blotch creature from outer space that randomly attacked poor medieval wooden shields. So, well, doh!

Well, guess what, it's me again.

And I got a little bag of sweets for all of you. (At least that's what I immediately think of when I see all those bright colors.)

Well, I wasn't thinking it like that, just like, having the main factions of the story where they belong, being able to join them, and letting the game set the course.

I totally agree. And that's another reason why I made the banner, in order to put the Arryns in the place they belong. ^^ I'm meeting some friends today for a bit of chilling in the sun, but when I get home, I'll begin smoothing out the coasts of the Vale of Arryn. There're already some ideas which I think are pretty neat floating about in my head considering the implementation of the Vale, especially the Eyrie and its waycastles.

Because I think that simply retelling the story of the books wouldn't make for a fun mod. Besides, even IF we'd just retell the story, your character wouldn't stick to the feet of, say, Robb all the time like some well trained puppy. Of course, you would/could/should have the chance to get into the Vale of Arryn as, for example, a trader and they're not very likely to fly Lannister or Stark banners up there... ^^

I only added the Arryn emblem so early, because I like it very much, just as a banner. There are already raw images of Joffrey's banner and several others on my hard drive, but I won't get to make textures from them today. Stay tuned, though!

Happy you show so much interest.

Today I got the raw images from Westeros.Org, so I immediately went and re-did a few shields and even added a new one in almost no time.

Making textures was much easier and faster that way. And of course, I have some routine now, so I think the results look way better than before, much cleaner and with more depth.

The Baratheon emblem is still the same, all others are 'new'.
  7. SP Fantasy A Song Of Ice And Fire Mod

Since the mod is in such an early stage, I'm not really certain where and when to set it. I even thought about a 'Dothraki'-setting because of the tree-crash problem. Well, I'm fond of the idea of episodes with each episode featuring its own setting / political situation in Westeros. For example one episode settled early ACoK, the next somewhere in ASoS. Perhaps even 'alternate' episodes, for example in the time of the 'War of the Usurper' or 'The Young Wolf's Conquest' (I'll leave that for you to ponder about...). The interesting thing about it is that you can tell the story of your character inside the world of Westeros while keeping independent from the main storyline of the books. But of course it also provides a chance to meet the characters or witness some of the 'historical events'. And, last but certainly not least, it enables me to chop the work up into more digestible pieces. ^^

I had a lot of thoughts concerning special armors and weapons the last days. There are quite a few items that would be great to see ingame. But, of course, someone would have to model those and perhaps even create special textures.

This would be my list of choice - far from complete, like so much of this mod. ^^ Maybe you'd like to help make it complete, so later we can try to sort it and make a priority list.

    Weapons:
    • Eddard Stark's "Ice"
    • Robert Baratheon's Warhammer
    • Jon Snow's "Longclaw"
    • Arya Stark's "Needle"
    • Joffrey Baratheon's "Lion's Tooth" and "Widow's Wail"
    • Brienne's "Oathkeeper"

    Armors:
    • Night's Watch Black Armor
    • Kingsguard White Armor
    • Jaime Lannister's Golden Armor
    • Loras Tyrell's Flower Armor
    • Sandor Clegane's Hound Helmet
    • Maester's Robes (with chain)

    Various heraldic stuff:
    • 3 different types of shields(leather, wood, metal?), emblazoned with House Emblems
    • 3 different types of body armors(leather, chain, plate?), with a heraldic surcoat
    • 'Warhorse'-texture with added emblems
I actually think that these wouldn't be very difficult to make. For example with the shields, I would just put all the emblems in one texture file, along with other necessary textures (blanks, straps, unpainted wood), then remap only the front part of the "Heraldic Shield" mesh with those textures. That's why I think, it would be possible to make several types of heraldic armor/shields in a relatively short time.

Anyways, I'd better get back to work on the map. When I get the raw images from Westeros.Org, I will try to finish a set of heraldic wooden shields as soon as possible.

    Best regards

So, What program do you recommend for altering .dds files?

    I simply use a .DDS-Converter:

    AFAIK gimp 2.2 doesn't support opening .DDS-files.

Well, I am already working on a custom texture file which will contain necessary textures for the heraldic shield and a selection of house emblems on painted wood. The houses I selected so far are the major houses, their most important bannermen (houses with notable numbers of ground troops) as well as houses with important characters or simply characters which I think are 'cool'. I think remapping a shield mesh or two with these new textures won't be very difficult or time-consuming, but I'll first have to convert the emblems into textures with effects and all. This means, I won't pick this task up until I have the emblem images from Westeros.Org.

Until establishing contact with Westeros.Org's webmasters I had already finished 3 textures.

    Here's a screenshot:

These are in the resolution they will appear ingame.

    Good news!

I exchanged emails with the webmaster of Westeros.Org and got permission to use their image database of Westerosian heraldry. They even are willing to provide the emblems separated from the backgrounds. That would make creating textures way easier. ^^

So, thanks a lot, dear Westeros.Org webmasters and contributors!

Just wanted to let you know that I'm not being lazy. ^^

Here's a little something I made as a test. Hope you like it.
  13. SP Fantasy A Song Of Ice And Fire Mod

Actually, I am not yet done smoothing and modelling rivers on the flat map that i got from my color map. But I'm already experimenting with GIMP + height maps as well as the terrain tools and this is the result so far. ^^

NOTE: These screenshots are a preview only. I am actually working at a flat map with detailed rivers and coast lines.

Long Lake and Lonely Hills in the middle, Last River in the background and The Dreadfort on the right side

What would you think of making different 'Episodes' which would keep pretty close to the Native game in gameplay but in turn would make it possible to start the story at different times. Alternate plot turns would also be possible (f.e. an episode which begins with The Young Wolf laying siege on King's Landing. ;D)

I will surely give Battle for Sicily a try.

  15. SP Fantasy A Song Of Ice And Fire Mod

Hm, how about for example Sandor Cleganes hound-helmet? There are some more unique weapons and armors which would need to be remodelled or at least retextured from scratch. I'll try to think of a selection of those.

Also, low-poly map icons carrying a large, well recognizable banner of the major houses would be nice, I guess. Stark, Greyjoy, Tully,  Lannister, Baratheon, Tyrell and Martell would be my first choices. Maybe smaller 'exotic' houses like Reed, Frey, Arryn, Clegane and Dondarrion.
