I can't speak to his personal character (his homosexuality wasn't exactly a closely guarded secret, but I doubt he was quite was stereotypically flamboyant as depicted in Sharpe), but he displayed no skill whatsoever as a general during the Waterloo campaign. He was almost entirely responsible for the Anglo-Dutch defeat at Quatre Bras and largely responsible for the nearly catastrophic loss of La Haye Sainte at Waterloo. If the French had won, you can be sure everyone and his dog would have blamed William.
