You could download the PNG (rightclick on the big image in kinlars first post and then 'save as'), cut that banner out and replace a native banner that has a black background. You will need a image editing tool like GIMP or Photoshop and the DDS converter or the Photoshop plugin for this.

Here are some links that may be useful:

    DDS converter: http://files.filefront.com/DDS+Converter+2+10/;3577988;/fileinfo.html
    Photoshop plugin for DDS: http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html
    GIMP (it's free): http://www.gimp.org/

There is another way to do this, however. This one is a litle bit tricky, especially if you want to keep your savegames:

Thank you for sharing but how to use that banners_g.dds? My character is currently using Vaegir banner (white+sky blue+2 lions). Do I need to replace that one with banners_g.dds? How can I know which .dds is the one I'm using?

    Thanks

This is the easiest way I know to do it:

Copy one of our banners_g.dds (the one with a banner you want to use of course) to the texture folder in your M&B directory but create a backup of the native file first!
Then apply this little tweak: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,45617.0.html
Everything else is explained in that thread.

Thanks for your owerwhelmingly positive feedback!

    Santas Helper:
The snake is actually supposed to be a banner. There's 'Adoria' (latin: fame gained at war) written on it. ^^

    Eogan:
I tried to stick to the rule of tincture but sometimes I had a concept that was not compatible to this rule so I just dropped that whole concept or I decided in favour of the concept and ignored the rule.
It starts with the tower. Brown is no valid tincture nor is the orange background of the bull's banner or the dark purple in the lower half of the banner with the single star.
I tried different styles for the water under the longship but my concept for this banner was a viking ship on a dark sea and an only slightly brighter sky above. Sailing is a tough business. Correct heraldic water didn't fit into this concept and the contrast is okay ingame. Oh yeah, and the griffin is totally messed up. Placing a charge on a background that's divided into two fields can't be done without ignoring the rule of tincture but it looks stylish.

You can put them into a chest at one of your castles/towns. Just go to the lord's hall and look for the chest.

I finally finished my set of 21 custom banners.
Honest feedback is welcome! If I absolutely failed at trying to do something similiar in quality to Lord Kinlar tell me. ^^

    WinRar Archive: http://rapidshare.com/files/168684442/banners_by_Sinderlin.rar.html
The archive contains a png file of every single banner and a txt file with the suggested colours for the back of heraldic armours.

Hex values of the suggested coulours for the back of heraldic armours.
So you don't have to dowload the WinRar-archive.

I did not test them - that would've meant a lot more work - and some of them are guesses. If you find a better hex value for one of my banners, please PM me.

    No, it's really simple.

    *Opens Photoshop*

    1. Open the blank banner, the whitish one, in RGB mode obviously. Resize it if it's not 140x342 pixels.

    2. Duplicate the "background" layer.

    3. In layers palette, click on the little "Add a layer style" button which looks like an "f" and choose "Color Overlay".

    4. In "Color Overlay" dialog box, change the "Blend Mode" to "Multiply". Pick one of the M&B colors. "Opacity" can be 100% or you can lower it a little bit, it's not that important.

    5. Repeat this for all the other layers you'll use.

    Sinderlin 说:
I'm sorry if my questions bother you

Not at all, I'll be happy to add one recruit to my M&B banner creators team.

So you DO use blending modes and it doesn't matter that using the blending mode will darken the colour because the same happens on the back of the heraldic armour, too! Now everything makes sense!
That's quite similar to how I made the background of my banners (multiply is my favourite blending mode, too) but I never used this for the objects in front of the background. I'll try that, it's a very cool style.
And here I thought there was some hidden tool in photoshop that nobody ever told me about because it's part of a big conspiracy.

Thanks for your patience, Lord Kinlar and if you didn't notice it yet: I'm already quite active in the thread where people can request custom banners.

Oh, so you meant this post: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,27335.msg1293388.html#msg1293388

Yeah, I already downloaded your colour palette but I wonder how you apply these colours to the blank banner. I recall that you said you normally don't use blending styles and  they would obviously falsify the colours anyway but I can't think of a different way to do it as colouring with the hue/saturation tool looks like too much trouble to me. I'm sorry if my questions bother you but this one will be the last as I think I understood your method.

    Thanks in advance!

Seriously? I'm going to look for that post!
Oh and btw: Thanks a million for the link to that DDS-Plugin by NVidia in your sig! Took me some time to figure out that I have to move the files by myself because my Photoshop is german and the installer only works with the english version but now it works perfectly. It's a nice plugin, very comfortable. I never liked the DDS-converters handling.

edit: I did a quick search through your posts and couldn't find what I'm looking for. Do you remember by any chance in which thread you posted your description?

    I did.
Thanks for your answer! I'll play around with different sizes and as soon as I get the hang of it I might use that effect, too.

Ok now I need some help
    What I've got so far:

    Stewart.jpg

What I'd like is to have a scroll effect round the bottom of the pelican nest, Not bothered about colour as long as it looks ok and for it to contain the motto:
    "Virescit vulnere virtus"

Here is the psd of the current file with the layers separate if that helps

    http://www.fileden.com/files/23554/Stewart.psd

(and the motto means "Courage grows strong at a wound" for the nosy people reading this )

The one on the left would be an alternative to a scroll that allows more letters and the one on the right is for kredka.

I took your jpg and did this as a quick sketch to show you my idea. I can send you the psd with the circle and 'inscription' if you want to work with it.
The font is Engravers MT. I don't know if that's one of Photoshops so if you don't have it, tell me and I will send it together with the psd.

I like the effect that looks like the colour is peeling off. It looks really cool and I already noticed it in the other thread.
How do you do it? When I tried reproducing it with the eraser or brushes it didn't look quite like yours. Is there a completely different trick to it or did I use the wrong opacity/flow? I hope you don't mind sharing your secrets.

Requests for custom banners, surcoats and shields

    Eogan 说:
Just like modern roadsigns, which STILL follow the nearly 1000-year-old rule of tincture:  You should always put bright colours (yellow and white) on dark colours (bold blue, black, purple, green, and red).

That's not quite right. The rule of tincture allows colours (what you called dark colurs) on metals (bright colours) as well. The Teutonic Knights coat of arms for example sports a black or sable cross pattée on a white or argent background.
The rule just says that 'metal should not be put on metal, nor colour on colour' (Humphrey Llwyd, 156:cool:.
