Right now landing a kick requires some skill and setting up the enemy. So with this patch an able kickslasher deserves his win. But before that a kickslasher could kick all the freaking time even against a skilled opponent if that one had a non-stab weapon only. Then the latter couldn't really punish the kick-attempt because the kicker could freely block and turn if his kick missed. Now a failed kick is more punishable (not just with a perfectly timed thrust) and thus alot more risky. So instead of 10-30 kick attempts in a high skill 3 minute duel we might see 1-2. This - in my opinion - is an awesome improvement.
Now, if I get kickslashed in a fight, I give the kicker a 'Nicely done.' and mean it.
Agreed, in fact this patch has fixed alot of the problems with kick. However I do feel it has disrupted the balance between 1H+shields and 2Hs. Right now, if I meet a shield user, who is close to my level of skill, while using a 2H myself, the fight turns into a desperate race to either break the shield or read the pattern well enough to be able to double attack. And I have to do that before I make too many blocking mistakes, which is made more difficult by the enemy being right up in my face for the entire fight. Right now there's no deterrent for facehugging, no reason not to just get as close as possible and stay there.
And let me be clear on some things. Generally this patch has made the game alot more fun, just because it removes the kick abusers from play. It also hasn't really effected the general balance of the game. I still see just as much 2Hs and shields out there as before. And I can still tear through most 2H or shield users without much difficulty. Its only when I come up against a good player using a shield that I feel the balance has shifted. Before the patch I would have said that 2H weapons were the best weapons to have in a melee fight. Right now, I'd rather have a sword and board. And this isn't solely because I don't have kick to fall back on, it's just as much because I don't have the threat of kicking to make the enemy think about his positioning.
Now for the "bring an axe" argument. Yes, an axe is certainly the perfect weapon to have against a shield user, but that has little to do with the problem other 2Hs have vs shield users. Admittedly, making kick more powerfull isn't neccesarily the answer either.
In short: I like what the changes to kick have done to kicking. It is harder to do and easier to punish. I like the effect this has had on duels, where you can no longer use kick as an I win button. What I don't like is what it has done to manual blocker vs shield user fights.
