This is unnecessary, you're opting to change the spear without learning to play it well first. Spear with shield should only have one directional attack because its a primarily defensive position for fighting calvary. If you see someone charging you with a two hand weapon, scroll away your shield and fight two handed. One block can get you into the range of a long weapon and a horizontal attack will stun them enough for you to start merrily poking and feinting away.
The spear is a two hand weapon, learn to manual block and you'll be amazed.
Stupid. It's not primarily a defensive position, not should any weapon be so ****ty as to only be used in one rare circumstance. Second, you are supposed to be able to fight properly with a shield and spear. Like the guy above me said they're one of the most common weapons of all time. In real life, it would be stupid to carry your shield and then get rid of it to fight and just as well it takes you out of the game to see some guy doing that.
And i'm sure most of the people that play this game are have busted a nut over 300 and would like to see a spear with a shield used properly. I don't think shield and spear should have any swings, but I believe the overhead thrust will not only look cool but also add variety to the attacks and animations (therefore making the game look more natural and less like a game) as well give the spear user something to use when an enemy begins to close in on them, and perhaps it would be the perfect move to compliment a well placed kick.
I believe the attack should be faster and shorter range. And slightly less damage to reflect the faster stabbing speed and smaller reach. I think this is perfect because, one the regular stab is great for taking down horses but it's too unwieldy and the charge is too long when an opponent is close up.
Imagine this, an opponent on a horse crashes into a shieldwall but gets stuck on the second rank, 3 men stab his horse and everybody is struggling to attack the guy on the floor because their regular stab is too slow due to it's long reaching stab and also because the animation causes the shield carrier to raise the shield up to their chest level partially blocking their vision making it hard to see opponents on the ground. Most of all the animation so slow and doesn't match what somebody would do or be capable of doing with their opponent that close.
How about instead, this happens again, this time the spearmen have their overhead stab, it lowers their shield partially to allow the quick overhead stab which allows them to look down and see the guy on the ground and better aim their stab and they mercilessly jab his body.
Alternatively. Spear and shield user is being closed in on by a longswordsman or axe carrier. Longswordsman notices his opponents weapon and blocks down instinctively until he gets closed enough to swing. Then he hacks him apart, breaks his shield and massacres him. Not only does it look stupid watching the guy close in on him doing the stab block animation and not getting hit even though every point of his body is vulnerable, but it's stupid that the spear is gimped so badly in that way.
Now with overhead stab. Spear and shield user is not so afraid and scared this time around and is able to feint and
keep his opponent at bay adding some complexity to the fight as the swordsman cannot simply close the distance in skill-less way. Of course, the swordsman still has the advantage in this fight because he would simply have to block upward but with the kick, combined with the overhead stab, he could not be taken advantage of by a guy just holding upward block.
And now you have made a mostly unusable weapon completely functional.
I think a good idea, although sort of unrelated would be to increase the parry stun time based on how cumbersome the weapon is. Which makes sense. If you knock a heavy axe or long heavy pike head away in way that the arm is not prepared to hold it, it's going to be much harder to get it ready to attack again and cause the guy holding it to lose his balance.
That's the realistic weakness of the spear and why a sword and shield user will still have an advantage over them, cumbersomeness of the spear.
Another good idea would be to make it so that when you stab your spear into the shield of your opponent, it should stop your opponent from moving forward almost like a kick stun, but without knocking him out of the animation, and much shorter a duration. This would simulate the pushing warfare. Note: it should only stop him from moving towards the direction of the spear, and only for a short time like even a quarter second is fine, just to stop his momentum a tiny bit.
To reflect this boost, and also because it makes sense to me from a realistic standpoint, I believe that spears should have extremely reduced damage to shields. Which makes sense as it it's not a hacking weapon, It might put a dent in something but you try breaking a single board of wood with a spear. Seeing a stabbing weapon causing a shield to shatter (heavy lances and horsemen lances and so on not included) looks pretty retarded in my opinion. So this should be added regardless of anything else I've said.
Anyways they're a good reason that evolution of warfare ended up with pikes, crossbows/guns, and cavalry. Those are what is most effective realistically.
