Just thought i'd post some feedback on troop tree balance. From my experience playing Rev 160, I think the Marinid/Granada troop tree are outclassed by their Christian Iberian neighbours. I'll explain the circumstances below. At this point I was a Mercenary for the Marinids.
Open "Pitched" battle:
I teamed up with two other Marinid lords (Total army size was 300) against one Aragonese lord (150 men strong). The battle begins in the usual fashion, both army's cavalry charge at one another, but the heavier Christian cavalry slaughter the Marinid light cavalry. This takes a sizeable chunk out of Marinid forces but i thought "The Europeans are weakened after that". Seemingly not. The heavy European cavalry charge the Marinid infantry. Most Marinid infantry is made up of Javelineers and Archers, with some light infantry. The Javelins and arrows fail to take down the horses before the Cavalry hits, and these infantry are slaughtered. The ultimate score in the battle was 280 Marinids lost, 40 Europeans lost. From what i can tell, the European Lord had a higher tactics skill, which probobaly gave him more cavalry to start with, still, this seems a bit harsh on the Marinids.
Siege Battle (Defending):
Defending Fes from an Aragonese force of 1200 soldiers. Fes had no lord inside (they were feasting at Algiers) but including my motley crew, had 700 defenders. The entrance was one ladder up the walls, which the Aragonese immediately charged for. They sustained no losses getting to or climbing the ladder, and very few once they hit the Marinids on the ramparts. I won't lie, i cheated in this one, a small spear, constantly pressing Ctrl + H, and battling in slow-motion did nothing to stem the Aragonese. My first reaction was "These are the Lords/Knights, once these go down, we'll drive them back." Unfortunately, in an army of 1200, there are about 300 knights. I spent an hour at this cheat-filled killing frenzy, i'd say i killed over 250 warriors. Nevertheless, the lighter european troops outclassed even the heaviest Marinid, and we lost.
From these two experiences i've drawn up a list of possible reasons for the slaughter:
1. Helmets, the highest tier marinid troop can be caught wearing a "Berber Turban", any head-wound form a similarly tiered european is fatal.
2. Swords, the Marinid swords are useless against heavy european armour, I also noticed the Aragonese use axes, which tear through the Marinid ranks and armour.
3. Armour. I havent looked at the figures, I'm not going to lie, but a "Thagri" troops wears leather, while a top tier european wears mail. I know historical accuracy matters, and I'm not sure on how to remedy this one.
4. Ranged combat: Marinid warriors use a lot of Javelins, but 2/3 of these miss and the one that hits isn't very effective. A shield with a javelin sticking out of it is practically useless, maybe "Good against shields" tag should be used?
Just some feedback, obviously I'm biased towards the Marinids, but the figures I posted are not fantasy. Thanks for an excellent, beautiful mod btw =)
