  1. Two Questions - Kings and Vassals

Thanks for the info.  It may have been +12 not +14.  Either way, it's a bit odd.
I think I'll just hang onto the king for a while.  I have one of his lords now as well.

    A couple of other questions:
    1) If there is a lord I have a good relationship with, is there a way I can work toward getting him installed as the leader?
    2) What is the advantage of pledging myself to a King, other than the taxes?  Do I get different mission options?
  2. Two Questions - Kings and Vassals

I currently upgraded M&B to the latest version, which I found on moddb.com.  I was unaware that there had been any releases after 0.903 since the homepage here was not updated, and I believe I was still playing 0.894.  Anyway, suffice it to say that there are a number of changes with which I am...
  3. Need Help Finding a King

Sometimes if a King/Lord is captured and then released from captivity, nobody will know where they are for a while until they make it to a friendly location.  You might just try camping out for a couple of days and then ask one of his lords again.
  4. Cheesy Cavalry Attack

Yeah, using your horse that way can be risky business.  If you get stopped in a charge you're probably also ****ed.  It'll be a matter of a few seconds before axes start tearing into your horse and you.  It's not easy to survive long at that point.

I don't find that's usually a problem.  Most infantry with piercing polearms are trying to get in front of you or out of the way.  If you keep them lined up just off the flank of the horse, they never stop to attack.  To avoid getting mobbed when you do get stuck, go around the outside of a group of enemies and charge the stragglers on the periphery.
  5. Cheesy Cavalry Attack

I'm sure anyone who has played this game for any significant length of time has figured this one out.  Does anyone else find it cheesy that you can use a horse charge against infantry to get a free attack on them?  For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about:  Skilled ground units will...

seeing half of my knights knocked out or killed by a bunch of river pirates is just frustrating

Yeah, there's no excuse to let your party attack something like river pirates itself.  If you have anything close to decent armor and a horse, you can take out essentially any number of river pirates all by yourself, as long as you don't do something stupid.  Usually when I fight bandits, I have my party stay where they start unless I need them.  I don't like to risk losing a high-powered ally senslessly to a lucky swarming of bandits.
  7. Infantry combat survival tips? (search negative)

Find a horseman early when you close ranks and take him out, being careful to spare the horse.  If you get mobbed, jump on and ride to a more strategic location (hill top, etc), dismount, fire arrows as they approach (slowly), and then pick them off as they reach your position.
  8. Progress?

I see my timing is excellent

Hmmm... seems my saved game doesn't work anymore. Any way to convert it so it works with the new version?
  9. Progress?

I noticed there have been some news items lately on the homepage, but they're all about previews. When was the last time there was any news regarding progress in the news section of the homepage? Everyone who bought the unfinished version has essentially pre-purchased the final product in...
  10. Maxed out Characters

Um... what's the point of holding some sort of competition to see who has "maxed out" their character the most from cheating? Are there some sort of bragging rights associated with being willing to cheat more than the next guy? I'm pretty sure it doesn't take any skill to improve your character by cheating.
  11. which save mode do you play?

I play in the realistic mode as well. Considering you can't actually die, I thought it might help to keep the game challenging. I do, however, think that the ability to exit without saving should be retained in the final game. It's always best to give people options. Games are supposed to be fun, and different things are fun for different people.
  12. How old are the M&B-players?

    vote 26-45 (my, that's a big range).
  13. need help with my archery

Hmmm.. perhaps I adopted this strategy when my archery skill was low enough that only lost accuracy by holding the button down. It will be interesting to test this. In any event, this technique works quite well for me.

I often walk backwards on a horse firing headshots at enemies that are coming toward me. Accuracy seems to be pretty good.
  14. Anyone ever played that old game, die by the sword?

I remember that game. You could instantly kill an enemy if you got in a good shot and lopped of his head. The combat system really helped to make this an attainable goal, as you could choose any start and end point combination for your swing (and, thereby, the angle of the swing as well), so you could aim for the neck in any situation.

Hmmm... now I feel old, since I hadn't considered DBTS to be a particularly old game. In my world, 3D graphics are still a relatively new phenomenon. Sure beats Atari football

You should release your arrow when the crosshair is at its smallest.

When using a bow, if you click the attack button once and let go, the arrow will automatically be launched when the crosshair is the smallest (your aim is best at the moment you finish pulling back the bowstring).

If you want maximum accuracy, just click the button once and continue to track the enemy with your crosshairs until the arrow is released a second or two later. The shot will go where the crosshairs are at the time the arrow is released, not where they were when you clicked, so this strategy works quite well.

Also, remember that arrows have finite speed and are affected by gravity. Aim high when a target is farther away and always lead fast-moving targets (e.g. horsemen).
