    From my perspective, the wrong decision was made here, or it was atleast made prematurely. I think the deciding factor should've been whether he used these hacks in a public setting. While I agree appearances are against him, Maximou has not been caught using hacks in the tournament or on a public server. Nor has he expressed in any way what his intent was with these hacks. More effort could've been made to get to the bottom of this, like talking to Sponge and Maximou himself.

    I realise full well that this was not an easy decision. I just hope the witch hunt that has been going on here didn't influence it too much.

    Why you we're banned:
    For no valid reason I can think of. If I had to speculate, he probably suspected me of using hacks. What happened is I dueled the admin, probably surprised him because I was using inverse mouse movement for my attacks and won, then I dueled him again and after that I got a ban. I'm always very friendly, never corpse kick or for that matter kick much in general at all, usually just jump around in a jolly fashion and give plenty of space before duels.

    Why you think you should be unbanned:
    Well, going with the theory I got banned for using hacks, I should be unbanned because this was not the case. As a fellow admin on the Ludus and several duel servers before that, I understand all too well how hard it can be to detect autoblockers accurately. That's why on the Ludus, video evidence is required.
    To be frank, I'm very much not amused by this whole ordeal. I think I deserve some credit here, I'm a fellow admin on the Ludus, the creator of the nditions mod (which also ran on the GK duel server and some australian server in the past) and I've got several thousands of hours playtime under my belt so I know how to block.

    I would also appreciate a sincere apology from the admin in question very much. It can be in private, I don't mean to put you in an awkward position or anything, just send me a PM. After that we'll have a few duels, preferably on my home turf, the Ludus, and we'll laugh about the whole ordeal. Your ban put quite a damper on my evening so if you were in my boots, I expect you'd appreciate an apology too. And please do remember my name next time.
  5. Random disconnects in MP

    It does indeed sound very likely that the cause of these disconnects is either your router or internet connection. Are you on wireless? If you are, perhaps you could try using an ethernet cable.
    Have you experienced any issues like this with other online games? If it's your internet connection, there's probably not much you can do about it.

    Thanks for the tips! My server has the old nditions bots on it. Perhaps it's indeed better to just put it on medium speed, the difference between medium speed and slowest speed isn't that huge though.

    The feint speed and attack angle limit are just a little experiment. Bots are indeed nice for practicing manual blocking, but I figured it might be a nice idea to try to change the melee system in a way that it has a lower skill ceiling and forces everybody to fight in a way that newbies are less likely to get overwhelmed by attacks that seem almost impossible to track for them.

    It's getting late, so I just closed the server btw.

  9. URGENT: DDoS of all major NA Servers

    To those of you who own a linux box running a warband server, have you tried limiting the rate of connections using the iptables "recent" module? I have no idea if it would help or work at all, but what if you limit all connections to the warband server port (to like, 3 per minute or whatever works), then set up a script to tail monitor the warband log file which triggers when a player joins the server and adds their ip address to a whitelist without the rate limit?

    You'd obviously need to find some way to put the ip address in the log files. I know WSE can do this, which is probably the easiest way. On nditions I devised something that did this without WSE, I can probably dig up my notes in case anybody needs it.
  10. The Ludus: Kradus, Dranton, Xerina

    Most of the improved AI was scripted on nditions, just a simple trigger to block at the appropriate times. I implemented the difference in difficulty as different delay values for the triggers.

    The problem (which might have been fixed in the latest patch, I haven't tried it yet) was that I couldn't set the block direction using the module system functions.
    On autoblock servers, the bots would always block in the correct direction no matter in which direction you tell it to block, and on manual block servers the bots would always block down. I changed something to make it so bots always behave as if they're on an autoblock server.

    I submitted a bug report about it ages ago with patch locations for version 1.131 and 1.134 here: http://bugs.taleworlds.com/edit_bug.aspx?id=3305
    If you're handy with a disassembler, you can probably find out where to make changes in the latest patch.

    That wasn't the argument. Also, I assume they made the armour with in the back of their mind the notion that the person wearing it would still need to be able to fight with it. And I think plated armour was pretty rare and expensive in those days, so the knights who wore it probably were rich and had a horse too.

    All still done at the higher levels of dueling. Once you master basic blocking, these things still apply. I have to anticipate for chambers and double swings, which requires learning their rhythm; once learned I can disrupt it. Traps also include double swinging and punishing them for predictable holds/feints.
    I'm not saying it isn't there at all anymore, I'm just saying it is sacrificed to a certain extend in these exchanges of silly feint barrages.

    I'm not sure I'm too fond about the idea of stances, if I understand it correctly. What I like about warband's combat mechanics is its simplicity and freedom of motion. There are only a few basic actions, but you can time and position them any way you like.

    Ofcourse all this freedom can have its drawbacks, especially since it's a twitch game. I don't really enjoy those "barrage of silly feints" duels much either. There's too much twitch involved, and I think several other fun aspects of dueling get sacrificed because of it. Like trying to anticipate your opponent's next move, messing with their rhythm or trying to lure them into a trap.

    It might be interesting to add a poll to this thread, I'm curious to see if the majority feels something should be changed about the feinting system. I started tinkering with the server a little, and managed to add a limitation to the speed at which people can feint. I made it so if people feint too fast, like way before the whoosh sound, instead of doing the swing there's a small flinch animation. Seems to work quite nicely, I'll test it some more in the next couple of days. Should render macros useless too, if there are actually people using those.
